Post by Professor Juliette Vector on Oct 9, 2005 20:08:07 GMT
Juliette Vector's classroom was on the 2nd floor near a stairwell to the Great Hall. Though it was quite a busy walkway, enough charms had been placed on the door and walls to dampen the sound. This was a necessity for such a subject as Arithmancy which required precise calculations. Arithmancy itself was a simple branch of magic which produced solid results that could be verified by as many people as need be, unlike other forms of fortune telling. The entire classroom was carpeted with a soft white carpet that was spotless and always soft as a feather. The center of the room had twenty oak student tables with two cushioned swivel chairs at each table. The wall opposite of the door was lined with cabinets that were all locked. Within were scores of runes, Juliette's other passion. The back wall contained two large windows that let ample amounts of sunlight in the area, also by the windows sat four pale blue couches. Under the windows sat a small cabinet that contained a couple wizard chess boards, as well as about a dozen other games. To Juliette a good classroom was one that students enjoyed coming to, she did her best to make sure that her class was comfortable enough for students to do their best work, though foolishness was quickly dealt with and the offender soon found that they no longer had any privileges in the class. When not teaching a class, Juliette would allow any student who so desired to come to her room to study, relax or simply talk and hang out. Today was no exception as a pair of Hufflepuffs had set up shop on the couches and were busily engulfed in a game of wizard's chess.
As Juliette sat at her desk in the front of the room she went over the roster of students she would be seeing very soon. Flipping through her lesson for today, it would be a fairly easy one. It would also be a good chance to weed out those who simply didn't have the patience or ability to handle the precise calculations Arithmancy required. Glancing at her watch, there was just a few minutes until the class would begin. "Mister Patterson, Miss Jennings, Arithmancy is about to start, you may return later if you wish." The pair of Hufflepuffs then got up and waved goodbye before leaving the classroom. Now in silence, Juliette awaited the arrival of the students to begin the new term.

Flo was sitting on her bed drawing something. She didn't yet know what it was going to be, but it would be something in the end. By now it looked like a cat, crossed with a goat, cross with a mouse. Flo thought it looked very nice. So far anyway. When she had Finished sketching out the drawing, Flo got some colored pencils and started to color it in. She was about to start filling in the eyes, when she looked up, and saw that it was time for Arithmancy. Flo stood up, and got her bag, full of books for her classes, and some ink. She put her bag over her shoulder, and walked down the stairs into the Hufflepuff common room. She looked at the dull, un-lit fireplace. Then she walked up to the portrait hole, and walked through. She then walked up to the classroom. Flo was still thinking what her creature was going to be. She looked into the classroom and only saw the Professor.
Flo stepped in, and smiled at the Professor. "Hello professor, not to early am I?" Flo asked. while waitng a reply from her teacher, Flo sat down on one of the chairs. She looked at the carpet. It looks all soft!! She thought to herself.

Cougar was sitting in the Ravenclaw common room working on charms when He notice from his muggle watch-wristband that it was time for Arithmacy. He thought of how hard it would be. He knew a few who had taken it before and said how bloody hard it was. As he walked toward the classroom he kept thinking "I'm a Ravenclaw I can do this." He finally came upon the door to the classroom, after asking directions more than a few times, and stood there a minute before walking in. He walked in and saw all these games and walked toward one of the tables to sit down when he tripped on the rug and became leveled. "This rug is so soft!" Cougar exclaimed aloud. He rushed to his feet and greeted the professor. He took a seat beside the only other student in here at the time and greeted her as well as well as he was pulling out his books, parchment and quill.

Monica got up from bed lazily. She had put on her uniform which she found no sense to it all. After she had made her way to the bathroom, she headed for the stairs. She had decided to skip breakfast and to just get the class over with. She wanted to skip it but was going anyways.
She had entered the classroom. She had hated the way how it was always so bright. She loved the dark the most of all. And she was tired of having the same teacher every year. She saw that there was a boy near the door as if he was waiting for somebody and a girl sitting in front of the class. Monica made her way towards the back seat. Lazily, she yawned. She had her black eyeliner on which made her look more tired than she was. She threw her bag hard on the floor. She sat there hoping nobody would bother her.

Kris walked slowly as he sauntered towards a classroom. After eing blinded Arihmancy would be the first class he would go to. Why? Because in Artihmancy he could do most of the work in his head and not depend on text-books and writing so much. Vector would just have to deal with him working a bit differently or with a different pace. Being blind wasn’t a reason o make Kris quit school. He might have stayed in shcool just to spite the professors, but since none had demanded his presence in any class yet, Kris made himslef behave somewhat. Not that he was ever a complete goody-two-shoes. Professors just seemed to let him off especially lightly this year. And Kris supposed that 6 years of cheekyness should have became a routine by now already.
His walking cane touched the wood of the door and Kris raised his hand finding the door-handle in a moment. Pushing the door open Kris stepped in, not even flinching when the door crashed closed rather loudly behind him. Tilting his head sideways Kris listened. Vector was probably here as shealways was before class began. Perhaps one or two students as well. „Good day professor,“ Kris said quietly and calmly, even though his voice carried over the classroom easily. Morrigan jumped on his right shoulder and obediently Kris turned and walked slowly between the isle of tables, placing the tip of his finger on the table corner when he turned around it.
Choosing a seat for himself under a slightly ajar window – the slight breeze told Kris that much – Kris sat down. At least he wouldn’t be seeing the stares if anyone would be wondering about what he was doing here while blind. Shifting himself on the seat Kris leaned his back against the wall throwing his legs over the seat next to him. Would there even be anyone stupid enough to come and try to sit next to him? Kris wanted solitude to see if he could actualyl handle a class. He didn’t want anyone sitting next to him, trying to whisper him answers and what to do while trying to help. In the long run such a person would just hinder Kris. He neede to learn how to handle himself despite the condition he was in. Leaning his head back against the wall, Kris closed his eyes. Not that it made any difference to the darkness surrounding himself. But he allowed himself this little relaxation mainly because no one owuld be able to see his eyes behind the black sun-glasses anyway.

Dana added lip-gloss to her lips almost absent-mindedly before dropping the small lip-bloss bottle back into her bag that had been carelessly slung over her shoulder. Walking down the Hogwarts hallways Dana made a few circles with her shoulder. She had hurt it a bit during the quidditch practice the previous day and she could feel it being a bit sore. At least the class was with Vector today. She was one of the youngest professors in Hogwarts and rather friendly. Even though that didn’t make her any more stern. But Dana had dressed more freely into a black dress, that reached his mid-thigh and a ilght-blue sweater pulled over it as high heels added a bit of height to her. Dana did have her robe along as well, but it was merely neatly folded and palced over her bag as Dana made her way through the buzzing hallways to the door of the Arithmancy classroom.
Pushing the door open Dana stepped into the classroom that was still relatively empty. Which was just how Dana liked it. This way she could chosoe a seat she liked herself as she offered a biref nod to the professor: „Good day, professor. Hope you had a nice summer.“ Dana gave a little start upon seeing Kris in the classroom. How... he was blind, so the class would be hellish for him. Pursuing her lips thoughtfully Dana used all her knowledge of her cousin – of her borhter – to read him. Relaxed seating, while his legs were thrown over the seat next to him. He wasn’t dressed in his robes, as always prefering a pair of black pants and a Slytherin-green silk-blouse. He wasn’t scowling, he looekd just expressionless. Basically everything about him was screaming to Dana not to provoke or bother him.
„Kris,“ Dana greeted with a smile stopping at the table and leaning forward to give Kris’s cheek a kiss before taking the hint and moving forward. Settling down about two benches ahead of Kris and in the row besides him, Dana pulled out her things for the class before continuing to read a story-book with a small smile on her lips. Kris looked a lot better lately and that cheered Dana up a bit. Even though she still felt quilty over what had happened.

Arithmancy. Ivy had got through many a hard lesson of this last year, and she would do so again this year. What made it especially hard for her was the fact that Nokomis didn't come to it. Having Nokomis there was usually a constant, so she tended to feel a bit vulnerable when her best friend wasn't there. It wasn't as if her concentration had ever been affected, after all. She'd delayed going to the class too early; she didn't want to have to be involved in any in-length discussions with anyone, but she had made sure to be fairly punctual as most of the teachers in Hogwarts would not stand for lateness. She wouldn't have expected them to anyway, or dared to be late if she could help it, but she wasn't going to be the one to lose points for Hufflepuff by doing things wrong.
The Arithmancy classroom looking ultra-welcoming and comfortable as always, and Ivy allowed herself a small smile. She always worked very hard in these lessons as it was quite a hard subject, but it was a good, quiet, calm environment in which to do so and she had had quite a lot of success, especially with the aid of hard work out of lessons as well on anything she hadn't been so good at. Ivy straightened her Hufflepuff jumper and looked around the classroom for a sign of someone she knew. Not so many people that she knew took Arithmancy, but there were a number of students in the classroom already and she made her way over to the only one she recognised at all, a Hufflepuff who she was fairly sure but not entirely certain was in the year below her. She gave the girl a shy smile, setting her bag down on the table next to her uncertainly and saying by way of explanation, "I hope you don't mind if I sit here."

Illiya tried to ignore the stabbing pain in her right side as she rushed down the hallway toward her next class, only slowing her pace when she passed a teacher or one of the students bearing a shiny prefect badge on their robes. She had to hold her breath as she passed them in a hurried walk for fear they would hear her ragged breathing and know she had been running. One or two professors on the way to their own classes shot her a curious look before she disappeared from view and tore down the hall once more. Illiya simply couldn’t be late. She’d get herself into so much trouble and she couldn’t bear any more points lost to Gryffindor on her account.
Finally the door to Arithmancy appeared down the hall and Illiya slowed to a walk as she approached, drawing deep breaths to re-inflate her aching lungs. She’d had to run from all the way up on the 7th floor, make two detours due to Peeve’s ongoing game of “tag! I’ve got your underwear!”, which he was playing even now with an unfortunate first year. Illiya breathed a sigh of relief once her heart had stopped trying to climb out of her throat and considered herself fairly lucky that she’d gotten here in the time she had and with her underwear intact. Once she felt she’d composed herself sufficiently, Illiya pushed on the door and poked her head in to see if it was safe enough to enter. Several students were already sitting at the desks spread across the room so Illiya moved inside and shut the door quietly behind her. There were, as of yet, no Gryffindors in the room and Illiya had to wonder how many others of her house were suckers for punishment and had opted to take this class. Illiya had filled her schedule as much as she dared when signing up for classes with Professor McGonagall.
Two Ravenclaws, Two Huffles, and two Slytherins occupied the room. Illiya wondered sarcastically if everyone attended this class in pairs and she was simply un-informed. Only the two Huffles were sitting together though, everyone else having opted to place themselves as far away as possible from one another. Illiya began to make her way toward the front when she recognized the familiar face of Dana. She had talked with the older girl briefly only recently; as Illiya made her way to the front though, she decided not to intrude upon Dana’s thoughts as the Ravenclaw looked fairly preoccupied with a storybook. A smile formed on Illiya’s lips and she half-wondered if it was the same book they had found upon their first meeting.
A boy sitting just back and opposite Illiya caught the corner of her eye and she couldn’t help but turn her head to look for just a moment. The boy was dressed in Slytherin colors and had his feet up on the chair next to him, no big surprise there; what did startle Illiya was that the boy was wearing sunglasses and had brought his cat with him to class. This was most unusual as pets weren’t often allowed in and Illiya wondered why the teacher hadn’t said anything yet. Figuring it was none of her business and not being stupid enough to try asking the boy anything, Illiya moved quickly to an empty seat behind Dana’s desk, on the opposite side of the room from the odd Slytherin. She didn’t offer a vocal greeting to the Professor but managed a shy smile instead.

Aubree slipped from the cold darkness of the common room to the busy staircases. She sneered at all the filth that passed. Aubree was so tired of them thinking they were better than the Slytherins. The weren't and they would never be one of them. Aubree felt the warm air approach her as she walked. The dungeons were so cold and sometimes she felt like Dumbledore was trying to keep them out of view or something. Aubree started to walk at a faster pace to get away from the annoying first years. "Scum." She muttered as she passed them. Aubree rushed to the Arithmancy classroom. This wasn't her favorite subject, but she didn't dislike it in the least bit.
Aubree looked around as she entered. She was glad the class was only for third years and up. She was so irrigated with the younger students. As she looked around, she only saw one friendly face. Aubree did notice the Ravencalw that she had told off by the lake. She gave him an evil stare as she passed him. Aubree made her way towards Monica and stood before her. "Hello, Monica." She said coolly. She gave a respectful nod before she talked to her further. "May I sit?" Aubree asked pointing to a seat next to Monica. Aubree didn't want to be rude and if her company wasn't wanted then she would certainly move.

One...two...three...four. Four people..including Monica. As soon as she saw her, Flo sort of hid her head behind her arms. Flo had kind of been hiding from her, along with her friend Rosaliz. Ever since she barged into their compartment. Now Flo was really scared of her. But she never showed it.
Flo looked up and saw someone asking her to sit. Flo smiled. "Sure, have a seat." Flo said, trying not to looked around to see where Monica was sitting. Flo looked at the girl, who had asked about sitting next to Flo. Flo had known her, from watching her play Quidditch and also, because she was a Prefect. Flo grinned. "I'm Flo." She told the older girl. "You're the Hufflepuff chaser right?" Flo asked her. Flo hoped she wasn't wrong. Flo would be really embarrassed

Sapphire had a slight smile on her face as she made her way to Arithmancy. The classroom always made the lessons very comfortable, and it was mentally challenging while not as uncomfortably strenuous as the discipline of Ancient Runes sometimes was. In fact, a lesson she enjoyed. Not one of her favourites such as History of Magic, Ancient Mythology and Transfiguration were, but still something she was glad she had chosen to take. She would be sitting her OWL exam in it at the end of this year, of course, so it was especially important that she concentrated well in the lessons to make sure she took everything in well. She would have to find a seat next to someone she knew wouldn't distract her, or one on her own away from anyone prone to talking at all.
Sapphire pushed open the door of the Arithmancy classroom as she turned off the corridor into the room, happy to find it light and spacious as always, the white carpet impeccable, presumably with the aid of some cleaning charms. Most Muggles would never have dared put a white carpet in one of their homes, simply as a result of the fact it was so hard to get any stains or dirt out of it and what there was showed so easily. But magic could overcome that quite easily and she looked with appreciation around the room, nodding to Professor Vector as she did so. She took in Dana Coran sitting on her own, before shifting her gaze over momentarily to the Slytherin boy with dark sunglasses on sitting not so far back to the side of the Ravenclaw prefect. She hesitated, pondering and weighing for a moment as she regarded Dana lightly. She hadn't spoken to her since the attack on the train at the beginning of term, although she had noticed her looking a little out of sorts. Today, though, she seemed to be in a tolerable mood so Sapphire headed over to the desk next to her with a smile. "Dana," she greeted the sixth year, resting her blue shoulder-bag lightly on the desk to give some indication of her intention. "May I?"

Gary hopped over a tricky step he knew. His tattered backpack bouncing on his back Gary jogged lightly down the stairs as he was humming a small tune. It was a nice day. Nice morning, nice people, nice school, everything was nice. The stair-case jolted and Gary almost fell as he grabbed hold of the railing as the stair-case slowly started to turn. Now this wasn’t that nice. This meant that Gary couldn’t take the shortest way to Arithmancy and would therefore have to hurry. Glancing at his watch Gary calculated quickly that he should still have enough time to make it to class easily enough inorder not to be late. Stepping off of the stairs-case Gary started to push his way through the hallways of Hogwarts. He had grown during summer and it showed. Had there always been so many children in Hogwarts? There seemed to be double the amount this year!
Finally reaching the classroom door Gary was glad to see that he still had 5 more minutes before the beginning of the class. „Hello, professor and everybody!“ Gary greeted cheerily with a smile flowing over his face once again making his chocolate-brown eyes sparkle with happiness. Making his way through the benches Gary smiled to Sapphire who he knew lightly as she was a year older than he was. And Dana Coran was here who gary knew because she was the Ravenclaw prefect. Choosing himself a seat behind the two girls Gary pulled out his tattered Artihmancy book a spare quill and a bit wrinkled piece of parchment hile waiting for the class to begin.

Katrina looked at the walls of the corridor in ore, her feet walking slowly so she could look carefully at each one. She looked around, no one. She looked around again, still no one but a few pigeons having a losing fight with a crow. She looked down at her watch, the time, it meant something important, she just didn't know what. Transfiguration? No, she tought, I've just had that! She went through the list of subjects until finally she came to Arithmancy.
"Ahh!" she yelped, picking her feet widly off the ground and running to the Arithmancy classroom. Phew, she thought, not late! She found an empty seat at the back of the classroom and laid lazily on the chair. She looked around the classroom to see many people from different years and houses in there. No one had really noticed her and for once in her life, she really didn't want to be noticed.

Juliette waited for the bell to ring and then she rose to her feet. "Good afternoon class, today we will begin our Arithmancy work with a simple self evaluation. I hope you have all read chapter 1 in your textbooks thoroughly. Now then, Today you will be using your own names. First off I would like you all to find your CHARACTER number. When you have found your CHARACTER number please write down what your number means in regards to your overal personality. You may now begin."
(( If you have never taken Arithmancy before, go to the classes section, my class page there explains how to find your CHARACTER number and what it means.))

Smiling at Sapphire Dana shifted himself a bit. "Of course you are welcome to sit here. You're welcomed to sit next to me in every class we happen to share." It was true. sapphire was smart, paid attention and woulnd't distract Dana's attention from the class. And if team-work was expected, then Dana could count on the year younger girl.
The class started and Dana flicked her book open to see the correct chart as she scribbled the correct numbers on a piece of parchment before starting to add them together. using only Dana Coran Dana got the character number 8. Pondering a moment Dana decided to add the letters of her two middle-names as well. The name Dana Gayle Cynthia Coran came to a conclusion of...3. In the end. So she was successful in finance or politics and she was whole- her body and mind combined. Not bad really. Placing her quill back on the table Dana gave a small half-smile at her score result before looking back at professor Vector.

Raising his head slightly, Kris let Dana kiss his cheek before she smartly moved forward. Kris just closed his eyes and leaned his head backwards against the wall as he waited emotionlessly for class to begin. At least it was Arithmancy. Kris had always been good with numbers and calculating as well as private work. He was a lousy team-player. Perhaps because at the few times he was forced to work with someone in class, his companions weren’t exactly up to par? Anyway this shouldn’t be the most difficult lesson.
Characters numbers. Kris didn’t think anyone could judge his character depending to a few numbers. He was better than that. Far more complex, holding characteristics from all the 9 numerological classes. However Kris’s fingers traced the table with numbers as he claculated the numbers in his head. 2+9+9+1+7+9+1+1+1. And that equaled 40. Or for the chart the correct number was 4. Well, Kris was practical. He dind’t mind dong some work from time to time either, especially not when it aid back doble for him later. Predictable – now this brought a sneer at Kris’s lips. Stubborn was good however. If Kris didn’t want to move, then he didn’t. And it would take quite some character to force him to do something he didn’t really want to do. Not the best, but wtith the exception of the ’predictable’ part, but Kris supposed that it could have been worse.

Cleo was singing along to the music blasting in her ears. She had a rather nice voice. Perhaps not the highest or best schooled – she would never become a primadonna. But she was alright for a random song and she rocked at karaoke. At least she was better than some people who went up to sing karaoke. Brushing her vibrantly red shoulder-length hair Cleo covered her lips with a matching red lipstick and smiled at her mirror-reflection. Leaving the common room after slinging her bag carelessly over her houslder Cleo enjoyed the sound of her knee-length red leatherboots clicking happily on the floor. Cleo had dressed for her own pleasure and liking today. Boots, black and red checkered folded mini-skirt and a black V-necked sweater. Cleo liked the effect of red and black together. It was obvious by what she usually chose to wear as well.
„Counting evening-hours can’t wait I’ve been thinking all day That something will be happening tonight I’ll open my favorite music-station And call my friends To meet me tonight at 8 To do whatever we want.
Tonight the little devil on my shoulder Raises it’s head Can’t resist him Today I must to something naughty.
I don’t really bother myself Thinking what might happen Don’t care what others think I know what I want and what’s good for me.
Tonight the little devil on my shoulder Raises it’s head Can’t resist him Today I must to something naughty.“ Ignoring all glances sent towards her, Cleo just smiled knowingly. She was a rather pretty girl and she didn’t mind a few admiring looks. As far as they stayed only looks.
Entering the classroom Cleo pushed the music off and let her eyes look over the room. Seeing that blind Slytherin boy Cleo hesitated for a moment, still recalling brightly their literalyl volatile first meeting. Oh, it had felt good to slap him with all of her might. Yet, how would he be working in class? Out of pure curiousity Cleo chose a seat behind the boy a mere moment before the class was starting. Cahracter number. Character number... calculating the numbers togheter Cleo glanced at what the Slytherin boy was reading and frowned seeing that they both had the same character number. Not hat Cleo really minded the description of number 4 and other people would probably have it too... but why that arrogant bastard?

Katrina looked up the ceiling as the teacher spoke. She forgot all about figuring out her number before she came but still she got out her equipment and looked away from the ceiling finally.
She kept fading away from her parchment with random numbers written in the corner from the night before. She blew on her quill and started to think about about other things like Alarice and Emma - who was still having problems with her herbology - and what she was going to do after the lesson.
Pupils were discussing things like which number each other had got as she gazed into space and suddenly she woke up from her trance. She looked down at her paper where the answer was written, she didn't know what it meant though.
She went inside her bag and brought out a large, heavy book with the words "Arithmancy" written on it in gold. She scanned it thoroughly until she found what it meant. Words like easy-going, energy, social ease and highly successful came up made her extremely happy that she went to Arithmancy.
She looked around to see if anybody was struggling and she noticed that nearly everyone had finished. As she looked around the room she noticed a girl she knew to be called Dana Coran, she smiled and then went back to her work. As she had finished she started to draw a little donkey with a child riding it at the top of her paper.

Illiya smoothed out the parchment before her and then leaned over to pull her Arithmancy book from her bag. It thumped a little more heavily than Illiya would have liked onto the desk top, causing her to glance about nervously to see if she’d disturbed anyone. Seeing no accusing eyes staring at her, Illiya was satisfied that she hadn’t caused a great disruption and she began flipping through the book to find the right page. Her fingers stopped when they found the passage concerning a person’s character number and she began reading swiftly. She’d already read this chapter last night in preparation, but one could never be too careful about class. She pulled out her quill and ink pot, unscrewing the lid and leaving a small ring of dried ink flakes around the little container. It had been re-used many times and simply filled each year when the ink it contained either ran out or became slightly jellied from dis-use. Illiya dipped the tip of her quill in the ink pot and carefully removed the extra ink from the nib. She scrawled her name across the top of the blank parchment and then used the chart in the book to assign a number to each letter.
Over the next few minutes, Illiya added and re-added the numbers over and over to satisfy herself that her math was correct. She kept coming up with the number 6. “Six represents harmony, friendship, and family life. Sixes are loyal, reliable, and loving. They adapt easily. They do well in teaching and the arts, but are often unsuccessful in business. They are sometimes prone to gossip and complacency.” Illiya read the description under her breath, tasting each word as it was formed. Prone to gossip?, Illiya quirked an eyebrow and frowned at her paper. She’d never been prone to gossip in her life. The reliable and loving part she thought was pretty good though, perhaps she’d just calculated wrong somewhere. Illiya double checked her numbers but they all came back once more to six. Scratching her head, Illiya began to worry that maybe everyone else saw her as gossipy. The thought was disconcerting and left Illiya glancing at the other students nervously.

Three. Flo's name meant three. Flo looked around and saw many students frowning. She wondered why they were. Maybe their Character numbers were wrong. Maybe Flo's was wrong. Just to be sure, Flo got out her book and re-did her character number. Nope, it was still three. But why were so many people un-happy with theirs?
Flo looked in her book again to see what her number represented. Three represents the idea of completeness or wholeness, Flo read on. Three indicates talent, energy, an artistic nature, humor, and social ease. Well thats true, Flo thought. I really do like to draw. Flo read the rest, and Wrote it down. When she finished, Flo looked around again, and still saw student frowning. Maybe they dont like what they saw. She thought
