Ivy jumped out of bed, looking out of the bedroom window of the Leaky Cauldron onto the sun-bathed Diagon Alley. It was already teeming with early-morning shoppers. She threw on some clothes and rushed downstairs for some breakfast. Halfway down the stairs she met someone coming up the other way. "Hey, hey, not so fast!" they said.

Emma was walking up the stairs to her bedroom at the Leaky Cauldron. Someone came running down the stairs the other way. "Hey, hey, not so fast!" Emma said, "Jeez, you're gonna kill somebody. What are you in such a hurry for anyway?"

"I'm starving!" replied Ivy. "And my dad's coming to meet me this afternoon. I have to be ready for him. Have you already had breakfast?"

Amelia walked into the Leaky Couldron. She sighed and breathed in the familiar air of her favorite pub. She looked behind her and saw her mother shutting the car door. Amelia rolled her sparkling blue eyes, brushed her long blonde hair from her eyes and walked to an empty table.
"May I take your order?" Tom the inkeeper asked. Amelia looked up at him and smiled.
"I'll just have a lemonaid, Tom," she said, sweetly. Her mother then entered and sat down holding her bag.
"Um, A egg-salad sandwich, Dear," she patted Tom's hand and the man walked away.
"Why are you so flustered?" Amelia asked her mother, Sherrie.
"Oh, I just haven't been to Diagon Alley in so long, I soppose," Amelia smiled and looked at her mother.
"Mum, we were here last year," her mother laughed fondly at Amelia.
"Yes I know, dear," Amelia was then quiet. Suddenly ounding came from the stairs as if someone were running down them. The voices were heard. Amelia felt curiousity build and she stood to investigate. Two girls were talking, rather loudly as Amelia neared.
"I'm starving!" replied a rather pretty girl, who looked to be Amelia's age. "And my dad's coming to meet me this afternoon. I have to be ready for him. Have you already had breakfast?" Amelia smiled at the second girl, who was much younger and looked to be a first year. She replied and Amelia looke dot the girl closer toher age.
"What's all the comossion?" she asked, pleasantly.

Ivy noticed that a girl was watching them and suddenly realised how loudly they had been talking. The whole pub must have heard them. Blushing, she looked away. She would really have to calm down before this afternoon. Pa's frail nerves could not take seeing the other, more boisterous side of his quiet, attentive daughter. Ivy heard someone behind her say, "What's all the commotion?" in a friendly voice. Suddenly she realised the girl must be talking to her. She turned to face her and soon recognized her as a Gryffindor in her year, although she couldn't put a name to the face. "Oh! sorry." Ivy said rather awkwardly. "I didn't realise you were talking to me. I'm not usually this loud!" She felt rather giddy.

It took the girl a minute to realize that Amelia was indeed talking to her. But when she did, the girl appoligized for being quite so loud. Amelia didn't mind, she was just curious. She smiled warmly and replied.
"Oh it's alright! I was just curious about what was going on!" She smiled yet again.
"The name's Amelia," she introduced herself, "What's your girl's names?" She put out her hand for it to be shaked and waited.

Ivy was relieved to see the girl smile. She seemed to smile so much! Was it genuine or just a facade? 'Whatever', she thought, and shook the extended hand. "I'm Ivy," she informed the girl. "I'm staying in London for two days to get my school supplies. How about you? have you got any spare time today?"

Amelia smiled, knowing full well that Ivy thought she was faking. But she was just a happy sort of person- some days. True she seemed happy. but inside she was crying for help. The only facade was her trued feelings about herself- not Ivy.
"Nice to meet you Ivy!" Amelia said, happy Ivy was being nice to her.
"And I have to do my shopping is all. How about you?"

"Well, I have some shopping left to do." Ivy said, rather worried she had betrayed her thoughts in her moment of hesitation. "I still need to get my school books and ingredients for potions. Plus my dad's coming today - he's never seen Diagon Alley before so I want to make sure he really enjoys it. What do you think I should do for him? Any ideas?"

Amelia pondered for a moment as Ivy asked her question. Something nice... Amelia always took her dad out for ice-cream and some Pizza.
"Well, my dad and I usually go out to dinner or for a snack or something- like Ice Cream. Or Pizza." Amelai shurgged not knowing what to say.
"How about that?" she asked her eyes worried slightly.

Amelia looked unsure as to what to say at first but she suggested taking her father out for ice-cream and pizza.
"What, at Florean Fortescue's Ice-Cream Parlour?" Ivy asked. "Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. My Dad isn't into that kind of food much but they do such nice ones he can hardly complain..." She trailed off, noticing that Amelia looked slightly uncomfortable, as if she was worried. Had she done something? Had she unconciously put Amelia on the spot when she'd asked a friendly question? She had no idea. Ivy smiled warmly at Amelia. "I cook his food most of the time," explained Ivy, "so it's not what I want to eat I cook, it's what he wants to eat, I guess. But it'll be interesting to see if he likes pizza, so that's what I'm going to do. Thanks for the idea." Was she totally losing her tact? Ivy wondered in horror.

Amelia felt suddenly ashamed when Ivy looked worried. Amelia felt a dred at what Ivy as thinking. Did she think Amelia was weird or strange for her hesitation on what to say?
"Yeah," Amelia said, laughing slightly trying to show Ivy that she ment no harm in her hesitation, "My dad is a Muggle so he loves pizza, The ice cream I would say is the best there ever was!" Amelia smiled, forgetting how worried she was to be eccepted. And just ebign happy that Ivy was having a conversation with her,

Ivy watched in horror as a faint blush spread over Amelia's face. She cursed herself. What was her problem in having a conversation where she didn't make someone feel uncomfortable.
Amelia was saying something about how nice the ice cream was. Ivy agreed wholeheartedly. Her stomach gave a large rumble.
"Oh dear, talking of food has set it off again," she laughed to Amelia. "I guess I'd better get some breakfast before my tummy starts complaining even more. D'ya mind if I come and sit with you?"

Amelia felt herself smile as Ivy's stomach growled and Amelia remembered that egg slad sandwich. She'd have to steal a bit from her mother. Then Ivy asked if she would let her join. Amelia felt a hige smile spread and nodded vigurously.
"no I wouldn't mind one bit!" she siad as she started down the stairs toowards the table, her mother, and that sandwich. Her stomach growled again at the thought.

Amelia agreed quickly - Ivy guessed she too must be hungry. She had to quickly scramble down the stairs as Amelia set off at quite a pace, towards a woman who was perched on a stool with a bag on her lap. This must be Amelia's mother, Ivy presumed, although she wasn't sure. Ivy arrived behind Amelia and stood there awkwardly, waiting for Amelia to introduce them.

Amelia smiled, seeing Ivy behind her. Sherrie, her mother looked up confused.
"Who's this, dear?" she asked. Amelia knew her eyes had brightened at those three words.
"Mummy, this is Ivy," her mother waved at Ivy, "And Ivy," Amelia turned to look at Ivy, "This is my mum, Sherrie," Amelia smiled, feeling she had done something great. She knew she was being stupid for caring so much of making a friend and showing her mother, acually it felt a bit tacky. It was like getting a puppy and showing it off. Amelia smiled anyway and tried not to look so thirlled just happy. She smiled at Ivy and offered her an extra seat.

Ivy was introduced to Amelia's mother, who she was informed was called Sherrie. Ivy smiled brightly, and took the proffered seat.
She couldn't help nopticing how much happier Amelia looked. She wondered what had initiated the sudden change. Certainly she would not be the one to puncture the positive change in mood on her new friend's part.
Ivy couldn't help sighing. It had been over 2 years now since she had last seen her mother. She longed to not be the one doing to caring. Really, she just longed to be looked after again. She had felt a pang when Amelia had said 'Mummy'. She wished she could say that again. But to her, her mother would always be just 'Mother' now. Never again could she be the innocent 11year old receiving the letter from Hogwarts. She would never forget the deathly silence there had been, followed by coaxing, threats and finally alienation.
She shook herself for her negative thoughts and returned her attention to Amelia and Sherrie. She smiled, waiting for someone else to initiate a conversation.

"So Ivy, dear, how old are you?" Mother asked. Amelia roleld her eyes. Her mother and saying the word 'dear'! It annoyed her very much. Amelia smiled though. She looked to Ivy and she seemed sad and depressed. Amelia felt a pang of curiosity, but forgot it. Sherrie looked at Ivy awaiting her answer.

Ivy smiled again as Sherrie asked her age, although she was rather worried that she had been slightly rude by allowing herself to look unhappy. "I'm 13," she said, "or more 13 1/2 I suppose but I don't really count those things. So I'm in Amelia's year, which is nice." She didn't know what to say particularly. It had been a long time since she had last spoken to an adult socially apart from her father, which was different, because she was there to look after her father. But Amelia's mother seemed friendly enough, although she supposed it was hard to tell. Out of the corner of her eye Ivy caught Amelia rolling her eyes - had something annoyed her. She didn't really know. Ivy flashed Amelia a quick smile and turned towards Sherrie, still smiling.

Amelia laughed. She didn't knwo why, she just laughed. Her mother always made her laugh like this. When her small giggling fit subsided, she looked at Ivy then smiled.
"Sorry, I thought my mom was being funny!"She smiled, reasuring Ivy that she was not insane just happy she had such a great mom who liked to talk to every body as if they were her own children.
