Post by Professor Severus Snape on Jun 13, 2005 1:22:27 GMT
Severus paced the length of the blackboard, scrutinizing the multifarious ingredients needed for the complex potions the class would be making. The last potion in the N.E.W.T.s curriculum would be to make a Wolfsbane potion. While this potion cannot cure lycanthropy, it does prevent the extremely dangerous dementia which accompanies the transformation from human into werewolf. Severus knew that it would be difficult, but if one could create such a potion, they would have proven themselves, having mastered the art of potion making. The O.W.L.s students would be amalgamating the Draught of Peace, whose properties were to help one heal a troubled mind, giving them a sense of peace and tranquility. Snape did not expect most to be able to create prefect potions, with the exception of a few... select students. However, he hoped that the class, as a whole, would be highly successful. Fingering a few porcupine quills, Snape scrawled onto the board, the instructions for a Wound Sealing Potion. Then with a wave of his wand, the other sets of instructions appeared. He sat down on his desk, awaiting the arrival of his students.
Beginners (1st-3rd years), Wound Sealing Potion: 1. Add 2 gallons of clean water into your cauldron and bring the temperature up to 100 degrees C. 2. Add 10 dried nettles into the water once it begins to boil and begin crushing your 5 snake fangs and add them in after they have become a fine powder. 3. When the potion has taken on a milky-white color, add 5 stewed horn slugs. 4. Take the cauldron off the fire and wait for 1 minute for it to cool and add 5 porcupine quills. 5. The potion should be a light green color, very smooth.
O.W.L.s (4th-5th years), Draught of Peace: 1. Pour 3 gallons of water into your cauldron and bring the temperature up to 100 degrees C. 2. Add 5 grams of lacewing flies, crushed. 3. Add powdered moonstone, 10 grams, and stir three times counterclockwise. 4. Allow to simmer for seven minutes. 5. Add two drops of syrup of hellebore. 6. Stir the mixture clockwise three times and four drops of salamander blood. 7. A silvery vapor should now be rising from your potion and the potion should be clear like water.
N.E.W.T.S (6th-7th years), Wolfsbane Potion: (6th and 7th years should pair up in twos.) 1. Pour 4 gallons of fresh water into cauldron and bring the temperature up to 100 degrees C. 2. Add 10 pounds of frozen Ashwinder eggs and wait for them to melt. 3. Skin four Abyssian shrivelfigs and add it to the potion. 4. Stir 6 times counterclockwise and 6 times clockwise. 5. Wait for 5 minutes before adding 5 milliliters of salamander blood. 6. Stir 3 times counterclockwise and 4 times clockwise. 7. Add four powdered bicorn horns before stirring the potion 5 more times counterclockwise. 8. Crush a moonstone and add the fine powder into the solution. 9. Take 10 grams of aconite/monkshood/wolfsbane and stir 6 times clockwise. 10. The potion should have a silvery look to it, like liquid silver, yet very watery and a large amount of smoke should be coming from your potion.

Drake Emerald walked into the classroom and noticed that he was the first arrival. ((With the exception of guests who shouldn't be posting)) This, however, didn't astonish him. Potions class was his preferred Hogwarts subject and anyone who had met him knew this. After all, he had been given authorization from the school to begin attempting to invent a new potion. He was finding it quite complex, but he loved the challenge.
Once Drake had found a seat in the front of the class he removed a book from his bag and began reading it.
Magical Potions and How to Master Their Qualities. He began flicking through the book as he anticipated the class to begin.
However, in mid-sentence he noticed that the orders for the potion they would be brewing was inscribed on the board. He put away his book and took out a green quill and green parchment.
He wrote.
Wound Sealing Potion: 1. 4. Take the cauldron off the fire and wait for 1 minute for it to cool and add porcupine quills. 5. The potion should be a light green color, very smooth.
He put down his quill and decided that he would just read over the instruction while he awaited the other students to arrive.

Walking into Potions class, Dawn's cloak casually glided behind her tall porcelain doll frame. Her hair fell perfectly into place over her shoulders. Her blue eyes, as cold as ever, found Snape at his desk. Before walking to her seat she stopped at the desk. "Professor Snape, Me and my Father were wondering when do you think we should will begin my lessons?" She asked as she added on as she began to walk towards her seat. "Feel free to check your schedule and tell me at the end of class." Nodding at the Professor she turned around on her heels and walked to a row which was in the middle of the class. Sitting down she read the board. 'Sixth and Seventh years should pair up in twos.' Dawn wasn't fond of working with a partner. They never carried their weight and Dawn was always stuck doing all of the work to make it good. Sitting back in her seat, she waited for someone from her year to walk into the class.

Katrina stopped in front of the Potions classroom, wondering whether or not to walk in. She thought that maybe it was a good idea to wait for other Gryffindors to come and walk with her. But she thought that maybe if she waited, she would be late and land in detention, as well as losing house points. But I thought that Gryffindors were supposed to be brave, not timid like that... Hesitating a bit, she walked into the classroom and looked around.
She saw two Slytherins there, but no Gryffindors. Not even one. She walked silently to the back of the classroom and took out her quills and other stuff she might need for the class, and began copying the notes that were on the blackboard, while waiting for a Gryfindor to show up.

Bee walked toward the Potions classroom, trying to make herself stay calm. Potions was her worst class and ultimately her least favorite. She dislike Snape and she couldn't make the potions he assigned them to do work. She was awful at it, and it didn't help that the lesson were taught by the meanest teacher. Bee sighed and walked into the classroom. There were two Slytherins and one Gryffindor. Bee smiled at Katrina and headed over there to sit by her.
"Hey, Kat!" Bee whispered as she sat down beside her and took out her quill and parchment. She started copying down the notes on how to make Wound Sealing Potion.

Tap, tap, tap. Pyro listened to his boots echo along the stone corridor. He held a biscuit from breakfast in one and and his bag slung across his shoulder with the other. The corridor was dark, the torches that lined the wall seemed to barely cast any light into it. Not that he minded, Pyro could see in the dark almost as well as in the light. Potions class wasn't a class that Pyro would miss. He wasn't great at it, but he wasn't bad either.
Pyro noticed a door off in the distance and knew it to be Snape's classroom. Pyro grinned as he thought of his last visit to the Snape's classroom. Pyro finished his biscuit and than brought one hand down to finger the vials on his belt. Last time Pyro was in the class it was outside of the normal curriculum. Snape had caught him during that encounter, but Pyro managed to talk his way out of it.
Stepping into the room Pyro glanced around. Snape was there, and so were a few students. Pyro groaned, two Gryffindors had shown up so far. At least they both looked like younger students. Dawn was their and that would probably keep the Gryffies in line. There was another Slytherin boy there, a dorm mate of Pyro's, but he had never talked with him before.
Letting out a sigh Pyro moved to wards the middle of the room and took a seat, dropping his bag to the floor. He began to scan the blackboard and attune the directions to his memory.

Maddie walked out of the last class that she had been in, and headed straight for Potions. She didn't want to be late for her favorite class, so she hurried slightly. She loved Potions! It was one of the classes that she was really good at! Actually, it was her best class.
When she arrived, she walked into class, with a semi-smile on her face, and took a seat somewhere between the middle and the front. She took out her books, parchment, and a quill. She read what was written on the board for the beginners class. 'OK,' she thought. 'Coolio.' She then began writing the ingredients for the Potion.

Cassandra perched the brown sunglasses on top of her head as she entered the front doors of the castle. She had gone outside to study before potions, hoping that the bird songs would relax her a bit. She always got worked up before potions because of Snape. She wasn't afraid of him, but she was one of those students who felt she had something to prove. Walking toward the room, she waved at several of her dorm mates as she walked. One, whom she knew to be a muggleborn, did it very half heartedly. Cassandra had probably gotten the one wish that many muggleborns had wanted, and that was to be a pureblood. After having the truth hidden from her for many years, she had started to come to grips with the truth.
Running down the steps to the dungeons, she entered the potions classroom. Looking around, she only noticed few people she did know. For one, her cousin Pyro Blackfire, and Dawn McGrogan. Both Slytherins. Throwing a friendly wave toward her cousin, she saddled into a seat near the two Gryffindors in the classroom. One she recognized as Bee, a dorm mate, and the other girl she didn't quite recognize. Smiling warmly, she greeted them both. " Hey Bee. How's it going. You know, I've really got to turn down my alarm clock. I thought a few of the girl's were going to scream at me this morning." Extending her hand towards the other girl, " I'm Cass by the way." She said this all while unloading her potion equipment from her carry-all bag.

The lower corridors always seemed to have a constant dripping sound going on somewhere in the background. It was near impossible for anyone to ever find the source. It was this noise now that Aden listened to as he moved along the cold, dark corridor to wards potions class. He was a 5th year and that meant O.W.L.S. Aden enjoyed Potions class so he wanted to get good marks and move on to the N.E.W.T.S class.
Aden approached the door he had entered hundreds of times during his years at Hogwarts. He took a quick glance at all the occupants, noticing his sister among them. There were a few other Slytherins, scattered about the room, and also some Gryffindors. Aden scowled, why was it insisted that they had to work along side they Gryffindors?
With a nod at Dawn Aden moved into the classroom and found a seat. He looked at the board. Draught of Peace, huh? Should be interesting. He thought to himself as he waited for class to start.

Jack walked into the Potions classroom hurriedly, he didn't want to disappoint Snape since he was head of House. Jack entered and stole a look around. There were three Gryffs and five Slytherins so far, six counting him. He sat down away from everyone else and put his bag on the floor. He took out all needed materials and sat staring up at the ceiling in complete boredom. He couldn't wait to start class, since this was what he was good at. He despised Divination and Care of Magical Creatures. There was nothing he could do about it, though, so he kept his head high and did his best most of the time. Jack looked up at the board and found what Snape had planned for them. A Wound Sealing Potion? I could need that in the near future, with all the injuries around here. He checked to make sure he had all of the ingredients for the potion and then sat lower in his chair, trying to get comfortable.

Post by Perseus Feynman on Jun 14, 2005 19:02:03 GMT
Perseus smiled a rare, but elated smile as he walked into the dark and dank potions classroom. He was carrying a large bag stuffed with potions books, as it was his favorite and best class. Not only was Perseus extremely intrigued by the subject, but he also found that he had a certain affinity for the subject; he was very skilled at potion-making and just as good at every other subject that required scientific reasoning, which was something that Perseus always respected. This was because Perseus had always been fascinated by muggle sciences and its complexity and had already mastered several tools to expand and ameliorate his knowledge in the field of subjects like physics. Perseus had gotten more than 100 percent on his O.W.L.s for Potions and was determined to do the same in his N.E.W.T.s. He walked up to Professor Snape, and said, "Good day, Professor." Perseus's eyes traveled onto the board and read 6th and 7th years should pair up in twos. He definitely did not like the sound of that, as Perseus was a very independent worker and loathed working with a partner, as he would always be forced to do all the work.... not that doing all the work was a bad thing.... Turning around, Perseus spotted a fellow Slytherin 6th year, someone who he could definitely work with. He was glad that someone in Slytherin, who was actually good at potions, was in class. Perseus sat down near Dawn, anticipating Snape's signal for them to start concocting their potions.

"Oh no, oh no, oh no," Roxanne muttered as she ran down the long corridor. Her leather backpack was being dragged behind her at top speed. She looked down at her watch to see how much time she had left. Five minutes. I can still make it. Why did I have to oversleep on a Potions day? she thought to herself. Professor Snape was notorious for taking points from Gryffindor for the littlest things. Her fear of Snape made her run faster down the hall, until she finally reached the door of the Potions classroom. Panting heavily, she walked into Snape's classroom, hoping Snape hadn't already begun his lesson for the day. Roxanne cautiously walking into the classroom, and saw that Snape was sitting silently at his desk, much to her relief. She quickly scanned the room, searching for someone to sit with. Her eyes fell upon a few of her fellow Gryffindors. She walked over toward them, still dragging her bookbag behind her. "Mind if I sit here?" she asked the three girls, motion toward a seat beside them.

Millicent slammed shut the book she had been studying in the library with a resounding 'snap'. It was useless, she would never be good at charms. Thankfully potions was next; Millicent's favourite subject. Not only did it not require a wand but it was down in the dungeons. The only thing that upset her about that was that it gave the mudblood filth an excuse to tread their dirty feet down in the best part of the school. A number of people were lining in front of Madam Pince and Millie walked out the doors. Down she went floor after floor as the air became considerably cooler and felt more damp.
She entered the classroom and with a nod at the professor noticed that 6th and 7th years were to pair up. Looking around she saw Dawn and Perseus sitting near each other. With a few swift movements she was beside her fellow Queen and took a seat at the same table. "Hello. Shall we begin?" She asked Dawn before turning her attention to the instructions on the board.

Trinity walked down the long halls of the dungeon towards the potion classroom, her heals clicking on the hard flooring. Her auburn hair flowed gracefully behind her and her silk school robes swished fluently as she walked. She turned the corner and came upon the door to the Potions doorway. She stopped for a moment, smoothed her robes and tucked her hair behind her ears before entering the classroom. Upon her entrance she saw a few younger Gryff's look her way, 'Filth, dont look at me' she thought visciously. Her eyes gleamed at the young Gryff's and she sensed a hint of fear in their eyes. She continued to look around the room and noticed someone she knew, Dawn. She nodded at her and headed over to take a seat. "Hey, mind if I sit her, everywhere else is covered in filth," she said, disgusted that Dumbledore insisted that Sltyerhins work with Gryff's, of all people.
She sat down in one of the three chairs next to Dawn and pulled a pad of parchment paper and a quill from her black silk bag. She looked at the board and began to copy the notes for her year in an elegant style cursive she had learned from her grandmother Jade.
'O.W.L.s (4th-5th years), Draught of Peace: 1. 7. A silvery vapor should now be rising from your potion and the potion should be clear.'
She finished copying the notes and blew lightly on them to make sure the ink was dry before setting down her quill to wait for class to start.

Relaxed in her seat, Dawn watched as a few more students walked into the room. Nearly all of them glanced at Dawn. If they weren't a Slytherin they quickly looked away. If they were a pure Slytherin, Dawn noticed on some, a grin appeared since they knew Dawn wasn't the kindest of Slytherins. Laughing to herself she looked away. She was in a good mood, who knows what she might do in the class. Perseus sat next to her as he didn't speak. If Dawn wasn't addressed, she didn't assume he wanted to talk. Rumors were being spread of the Salazar relative that he has changed his ways to fit his blood. Seeing as Dawn haven't conversed with him nearly all year, she wasn't to sure. Not minding too much about the subject Dawn remembered, she looked to her other side as Millicent- a fellow Queen, took a seat. " o' Course." She said with a grin. Looking up at the board in front of her, she read the rest of the instructions.
Taking out her wand, She pointed it at the cauldron. A pouring glass container appeared above, as it was filled with one gallon of water. Tapping it three more times, the container poured water into the cauldron and refilled itself, untill it poured in four gallons. Lighting a fire below the ebony cauldron Dawn heard a farmilar voice speak up by her. Looking up, Dawn's emeral green eyes fell on a younger girl. Grinning, she noticed it was Trinity, a fellow Slytherin but fourth year. Dawn didn't speak that much to younger students but a few were worth her time. Trinity was one of the few. "Sure, Trinity." Dawn spoke as she smiled toward her. Turning toward Millicent. "Aye-You've met Trinity Jade, I presume?" waiting for Millicent to see her and respond, she spoke again. "With the potion, we just have to wait a few for it to turn to 100º."

Trinity smiled, realizing how fortunate she was that a 6th year Slthyerin such as Dawn considered her friend worthy. She pulled her cauldron out from the cabinet under her desk and begin to pour in water, one gallon at a time. She reached into her silk robe for wand and then pointed it at the area underneath the cauldron, "Incendio," she said lighting a small fire. She then turned her head to Dawn, who was introducing her to Millicent, while waiting for her cauldron to heat to 100 degrees C.
"I don't think we have been introduced," Trinity said, "But I have seen you around." She held her out firmly to Millicent and waited for her response.

'O.W.L.s (4th-5th years), Draught of Peace: 1. 7. A silvery vapor should now be rising from your potion and the potion should be clear.'
Dix read each word carefully, digesting each word and syllable so she wouldn't misunderstand Professor Snape. There was nothing worse then crossing Snape and Dix wasn't in the mood to do that. She sighed and started her potion. She poured 3 gallons of water into her cauldron then turned the temperature to 100 degrees celsius.
Dix then reached for the lacewing flies, Egh, and crushed them. She weighed them, 4.8 grams, crushed some more, weighed them, 5 grams. She then added those into the cauldron. The powdered moonstone was a bit harder, it took her awhile to get the exact 10 grams and add that. Dixie then stirred it three times counterclockwise as directed.
Simmering for seven minutes. Seven minutes was going to be a long wait for Dix. So she sat back in her chair and looked around. The Gryffs were too busy being goody-two-shoes and there were few Slyths conversing with another. She sighed and looked at her potion. 5 more minutes. Dix thought about what was going on in her family, the whole Hanner problem, and wondered how Mack was taking it. Her younger sister didn't seem to have showed up for class today, not that Dix cared. Seven minutes were up.
Two drops of syrup of hellebore were added. She then stirred the mixture clockwise three times, and added four drops of salamander blood. Dix hated salamander blood, it was hard to get out of clothes; so she made certain she didn't spill any. When she was finished with that, she check her potion. It had a silvery vapor coming from the top, Dix nodded, and her potion was clear. She sat back- wondering if she would get points or a good job.

Once Drake had finished reading through the process for the wound-sealing potion he placed his cauldron on top of his desk. After that was finished he reached into his bag and pulled out his advanced potion making kit that he had received from his uncle quite a few months ago. He slowly opened the lid and began taking out the ingredients he would need.
He quickly removed the ten dried nettles, the 5 snake fangs, and the 5 stewed horn slugs. However, when he reached the section about the porcupine quills he froze. The instructions that he had been given indicated the amount of an item he would need for the completion of the potion, except for the porcupine quills.
Drake knew that it would be impossible for him, knowing how much he had studied potions on his own, to proceed with a potion in which he was missing a quantity. So he quickly raised his hand. After the professor had called on him he asked his question.
"How many porcupine quills do I need to use? It doesn’t specify.”
With this question he wondered if he was going to upset Professor Snape, but then again, it was a very reasonable one.

Severus strode swiftly towards Emerald's cauldron smiling that one of his students had made such a keen observation, however, if he had studied a bit harder, it would be obvious that the the amount of porcupine quills depended on how concentrated the maker wanted it. Nevertheless, it was a good question and Snape answered, "It does not really matter how much you put in. However, if you want a specific quantity, I would put in about 5 or 6. There really is no limit to the amount of porcupine quills you put in. The only exception is that if you put in too much, its effects may be altered and it would seal every opening into your body, such as your mouth. However, I could never imagine why anyone would want to put several hundred porcupine quills into their potion unless they were Potter or Longbottom. Ten points to Slytherin for pointing that out, Mr. Emerald."
Turning towards a 6th year Slytherin he had always favored, Snape said, "Mr. Feynman, if you are the odd man out, you are always welcome to do the Wolfsbane potion by yourself. I trust that it will not be too difficult for you, considering your high O.W.L.s score in potions."

Drake smiled as Professor Snape walked away from his desk. Potions was his favorite class, and Professor Snape was his favorite instructor.
Once Drake had learned that he was able to control his own amount of porcupine quills he was quite excited. He knew that once he reached the end of the potion he would add porcupine quills until became very smooth with a light green color.
Drake then decided that it was time to begin his potion, so in accordance with the instructions he placed two gallons of water into his cauldron.
Once this was finished he took his wand out of his pocket and pointed it at his wand.
"Celcio maximus." He muttered as his cauldron suddenly turned blue, and when it reached 100 degrees it would turn red.
Drake took his book back out of his bag and read it while he waited.
Finally, when the color of his cauldron had changed from blue to red he added the 10 dried nettles to the boiling water. Once he had added the nettles to his cauldron, he took out his five snake fangs and a crushing bowl and began crushing them. He did this until they became a very fine dust. When they met the standards of Drake's keen potion eye he added them to his cauldron.
It was now time for drake to wait until his potion had become a milky-white color. Once this was completed Drake added in his five stewed horned slugs, and then he took his cauldron off of the fire and timed it for one minute. As soon as the one-minute had passed Drake dropped a porcupine quill into the cauldron. He waited for a moment to notice only a gradual change in color. He then added one more porcupine quill for every one minute that passed until he had added seven. This is when he reached the color of light green, and the creamy smoothness that he wanted.
Once Drake was entirely happy with his potion he took an empty vessel from his bag and filled it with the potion. He labeled it Wound Sealing Potion and sat it on his desk as he waited for it to be graded.
“Well, that was fun.” He said with a smile as he faded back into his book.
