Let's pass a butterbeer to Kia,
who has been role-playing for many years (6?)
and currently plays Damien, Carlin and now Colin.
The Basics:
House: Gryffindor
Year: Seventh
Age: 18
Blood: Half-blood
Wand: Sandalwood, 10 inches, demiguise hair core
Pet: Black owl, Jethro
Physical Description:
With short black hair, dark blue eyes and an easy-going, genuine smile, Colin could be described as handsome by anyone who cares to look. Being under the average weight for his height of 5’10”, his frame is almost awkwardly lanky even though his growth spurts stopped years ago. Even if his family had the fortune to support an interest in fashion, Colin maintains that he wouldn’t care about the way he dresses, sticking to simple and comfortable styles.
Personality:
Looking at his background, it’s no surprise that Colin has no problem with working hard, though he does tend to treat school more as a time to relax than a place to learn especially with Bradley’s influence. He does reasonably well in school however, which can be attributed to the desire to prove himself to his uncle; it might not be logical since Colin is very much aware that his uncle loves him but logic has very little to do with the reality of emotion, in his experience. Although, at times, Colin can be exceptionally astute in picking up on his friends’ feelings, he also has a tendency to be quite oblivious about certain matters.
Colin has a soft heart for those he thinks are in trouble or being mistreated by someone else, and has little problem with trying to rectify the situation. Despite, or perhaps because of, his somewhat protective nature, Colin makes friends and trusts people easily unless he thinks he has a legitimate reason to be wary of someone’s intentions. He can be rather rash at times, bounding ahead without really thinking about the consequences, and his fierce loyalty to his friends has landed him in trouble more than once over the years.
History:
Colin is the illegitimate child of a wizard, Benjamin, whose surname Colin doesn’t know and truly doesn’t care to know, and Caroline Morgensen, a squib living in the Muggle world. As far as Colin is aware, he was conceived during a short fling and his father immediately abandoned both his lover and unborn child, presumably to marry a pureblood witch picked out for him by his parents. The truth, as ever, is not quite so cleanly cut into black and white, but Colin, unwillingly pained by the perceived abandonment of his father, has no desire to delve into shades of grey to discover the truth of eighteen years before.
His early childhood was a peaceful one, lived out in the serene town of Armagh in Northern Ireland, with his mother and the neighbours who looked after him while Caroline worked. The area that they lived in was a close-knit muggle community and Caroline had no intention of disturbing the town’s ignorance should Colin ever display the magical tendencies passed down to him from both family lines so she started to make plans for their lives after Colin’s first exhibition of accidental magic in front of his young playmates. Explaining away magic as the imagination overwhelming common sense was easy enough with children but adults wouldn’t remain blind to the magic inhabiting Colin for long.
Due to his magic, Colin experienced disruption in his orderly life for the first time as his mother fluttered around hurriedly, desperately trying to organise moving herself, a young child and all of their belongings to a small apartment in Liverpool, England. It seemed that before he knew it, even before his eighth birthday, he was living an entirely different life, cramped and stifled in a two-bedroom apartment above an apothecary. One bedroom was claimed by one of the wizards Caroline had kept in contact with even after fleeing from the taunting sight of her inaccessible magical heritage, a man whom Colin was instructed to call ‘Uncle Richard’ despite absolutely no blood relation existing between them, while Caroline and Colin shared the second bedroom with Caroline sleeping on a transfigured mattress on the floor and Colin tucked into the old bed that Uncle Richard swore had once housed the pirates of previous centuries.
Life was hard for the three of them but, makeshift as they were, they were a family. Caroline worked long hours for what she quietly grumbled was not enough pay and in the absence of his mother, who had been the only steady adult influence in his life until Richard, Colin found himself wandering down to peek into the apothecary, gradually learning about potions and ingredients under the tutelage of the man who was becoming the closest thing to a father that Colin had ever known. With Colin as a sort of apprentice who not only assisted Richard whenever possible but also unwittingly tempted people into the apothecary with his guileless smile, the small business soon amassed enough money to permit Richard moving to a bigger store in a bigger city, London. Being happily settled in Liverpool and not at all inclined to move to London, which she viewed as the meeting place for the magical world, Caroline declined Richard’s offer to share a house with him. Torn between his mother and the man who was all but his father but incapable of leaving his mother all alone, Colin waved off Richard at the train station and resigned himself to a life without the knowledge the man had always been trying to entice Colin to absorb.
Going off to Hogwarts for the first time was, to say the least, a magical experience for Colin. Sure, there was the prat, Bradley Jameson, to contend with but the other Gryffindor boys, particularly Santiago, were likeable enough and Colin had never had much trouble making friends. After a while, much to his private shock, even Bradley turned out to be not so much of an idiot as Colin had first thought him to be or, to be more precise, he grew out of it with a bit of helpful prodding from Colin. It didn’t take long for Bradley to become...well, everything, really. He could argue with him, laugh with (and at) him, fight with him and just be himself with him. In a letter from Richard in reply to Colin’s amazement that someone he had disliked so much could turn out to be his best friend in only a year, the pair were described as different sides of the same coin. For all of his intelligence, it took Colin a while to understand the similarities that his uncle had noticed between Colin and Bradley without even seeing them interact together.
During the summer before his third year, Colin moved to London to live with Richard permanently at his mother’s request. Caroline told her only son that her best friend could teach him so much more than she ever could, especially now that Colin had learnt everything that he could from her. Richard’s wisdom was so much more relevant to Colin as he was now; he knew all that he could ever need to about manners and courtesy and respect so now it was time to concentrate on the magical knowledge that Richard could gift him with. After a few days of unsettled discomfort from having been living separately for so long and missing Caroline’s presence, the two settled back into the easy routine that they had developed years before.
With the experience of working in an apothecary and being taught by a retired healer, no one would be surprised to learn that Colin is most proficient in Potions and has no ambitions further than assisting his uncle after graduation and keeping in touch with all of his friends, especially Bradley. Relationships hold little interest for him; despite a brief infatuation with Katie, Bradley’s cousin, and a slightly younger Hufflepuff named Laura, Colin has focused exclusively on his friends, studying and, during the summer, swimming and the apothecary. The prospect of life after Hogwarts isn’t something that unnerves Colin in the slightest: no one can predict the future but he is confident that none of the essentials in his life – Richard, the apothecary, his mother, Bradley – will change or disappear.
