Ivy Tunstall
The Basics:
House: Hufflepuff Graduate
Class of: 2001
Age: 18
Blood: Half-Blood (To the best of Ivy's knowledge, she is a Muggleborn)
Pet: Small Owl named Gilbert
Wand: Mahogany, Unicorn Hair, 11 1/4 inches.
Employment: Apprenticeship with Charms contractor; also an employee at Catalina’s Cubby in Hogsmeade, where she works as a waitress on Saturdays.
Physical Description:
Tall. Long, light brown hair with a slight wave, dark brown eyes. Medium build.
Personality:
Ivy is a quiet person, but friendly, loyal and affable. Largely, she sticks to her small circle of friends and is certainly not one for confiding in strangers; however she does like talking to new people and gradually - very gradually, for she is cautious to commit them to the small bunch of people who mean a great deal to her - making friends with them. Ivy can take offence easily, but is also easily reconciliated, especially with people whom she likes too much to stay cross with. She has a large propensity for worrying, both about trivialities and about much worse things: a tendency that was always present but has been heightened by things that have already gone wrong in her life.
Ivy's hobbies include playing the piano, cooking and embroidery, as well as occasionally horse-riding when she has the opportunity (not that she has had the time or money for horse-riding for a very long time).
Ivy enjoys Quidditch a great deal. She joined the Hufflepuff team in her third year and by now experience and a huge increase in confidence have made her a strong Chaser, still with the same dogged determination as she displayed in her very first game. She enjoys the feeling of speed she gets when chasing after the Quaffle. Once doubtful about her ability in the sport, she has been the Captain of the Hufflepuff Quidditch team since sixth year and it brings out a much more confident, outgoing and, to tell the truth, slightly domineering side in her. Ivy is not a natural speech-maker, but her passion for the sport and her keen dedication do make her at least tolerably able to lead her team-members, in her own view. The fact that she is very good at Quidditch was proved by her making the Wigtown Wanderers student team at the end of the Quidditch Skills Cup, but Ivy had to turn down the opportunity because she didn’t feel she could afford the break from work, and she has never had the intention of becoming a professional player no matter how much she likes the sport. It seems unlikely that she will ever play much Quidditch again.
Ivy's best subject is Charms. She is not a dunce by any stretch and she does well in most of her subjects, although she is not absolutely outstanding at many of them. Charms is the only subject at which she is really good (although she also gained an Outstanding in Ancient Runes at OWL level), and since she enjoys this the most, it is this subject that she has chosen to follow as a career-path. At NEWTs level, Ivy studied Charms, Ancient Runes, Astronomy, Transfiguration and DADA, and through a lot of hard work she managed to achieve O’s in all of these save for DADA, in which she got an E. She has managed to get herself organised with an apprenticeship for a charms contractor, the work involving casting appearance-enhancing, protective and Muggle-repellent charms on buildings. Ivy is excited about starting a new chapter in her life and having a proper job for the first time. For once, she feels very optimistic about everything.
Biography:
Born on the 1st April 1983 in Taunton, Somerset, England, to a Muggle father, Thomas Tunstall, and a Squib, Emma Burrell, Ivy Tunstall had displayed rather ordinary academic ability and a peculiar knack of making things go wrong until she was notified she had a chance to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Her father was supportive of her decision to attend the magical school but her mother cut off all contact with her until such a date as she promised to never return to Hogwarts. Ivy never knew why she objected so strongly, and while she tries to live as much as she can in her everyday life, she does wonder frequently what the reason for this betrayal was, especially since following her father's death it has meant she no longer has any parent that she can turn to.
Nevertheless, she never made the promise. It's rather too late for that now, as she has already graduated from Hogwarts. While at Hogwarts, she was somewhat shielded from the responsibilities and tensions of her Muggle life, but since the death of her father where she is has made little difference. Her father had really been the focus of her life: he had been ill for quite some time and she spent a lot of her time caring for him. It was only after his death that she realised quite how much she had relied on him for moral support. Ivy was forced to grow up and shoulder tough responsibilities almost as soon as her mother left, needing to arrange for care for her father whilst she was away at school and, as he became increasingly frail, to manage their tight financial situation herself as well. After her father’s death, Ivy’s financial situation became even more dire and during her fourth year, she took a weekend job at Catalina’s Cubby in Hogsmeade to help make ends meet. Even now, with good exam results and an apprenticeship for a decently-paid trade, financial matters are still a great concern for her.
With support from her family so sparse (or rather, non-existent), Ivy’s friends are extremely important to her. She feels herself very lucky in having the close group of friends that she does, all people who she has known for a long time. Close friends include Nokomis Astarra (Noko), Sadie Rivers, an amazingly creative Hufflepuff two years younger than Ivy, and Ashley Hill (Ash), who has mellowed quite a lot from the hyper fourth year she was when Ivy first met her. Her best friend Charlie is a wonderful source of support and unfailing friendship, even if he can't stop her worrying however much he teases her. Their friendship has been a little bit rocky at times over the past couple of years, most probably because while they are comfortable confiding in each other, ‘I love you’ was difficult to say.
