It was like a flawed mimicry of a similar time last year, Damien mused as he turned his head away to hide his secret smile from his cousin. Carlin was hovering over him, eyes narrowed suspiciously as she watched him painstakingly shave away every last strand of the facial hair that he had sported every single day of the summer. Her mistrustful thoughts hung between them, unsaid but no less prominent in the room because of the silence. With every second that passed, her displeasure grew until he could almost feel it pressing against his skin demandingly. In direct contrast, Damien’s amusement at the situation was rapidly disappearing. He loved Carlin – she was his cousin, his best friend and the one person he could always rely on. His fondness for her, however, did not give her the right to know everything about his life, most particularly when she had already ruined his chances once. Fair play had been suspended with that little trick and the equilibrium would not be regained until Damien got his revenge. That would be tonight.
“I’m going out with Theresa tonight,” Damien lied smoothly, his smugness growing when Carlin nodded and appeared to relax. With leaving Hogwarts forever becoming an ever closer reality, she would doubtless assume that he was considering an eventual marriage with his most faithful and reasonably quick-witted conquest. Maybe it wouldn’t even be a bad idea in terms of logistics, but he had stated his lack of interest in marriage often enough that Carlin shouldn’t disregard his words so carelessly. Yes, Damien decided as Carlin flicked his hands away to start fixing his hair in the way that only she could ever achieve. His cousin had definitely swallowed his untruth without even a flicker of disbelief. He hated all this lying and trickery, but it would all be over soon. The balance had to be restored and then everything could go back to normal.
For the second time in less than twelve months, Damien paused at the door of his dorm, flashing a warm smile at his cousin. “Don’t wait up,” he laughed jokingly, “you know how energetic Theresa can be where I’m concerned. She can’t get enough of this body.” The sound of Carlin’s mocking laughter followed him down the stairs, haunting him until he left the Slytherin Common Room and headed in the direction of the stone gargoyle. He was a little bit earlier than the time agreed but lingering anywhere near Slytherin territory would have risked a potential encounter with Carlin, who would be on her way to meet her own conquest for the evening in less than an hour.
