Carlin would be lying if she said that she didn’t enjoy being the Head Girl. The power alone was worth it. That power was worthless outside of the castle, of course, but inside? It made her life, her game so much easier. Even the patrols around the corridors weren’t incredibly annoying, especially when she paired herself with Damien. So, really, the holiday dance wasn’t such an inconvenience. There would be boys, there would be dancing and there would be darkened corners for a bit of discreet whispering. She had even signed herself up for a blind date without much of Damien’s irritating provocation. It was the perfect chance to prove that she could have anyone, from any house, without knowing much or, indeed, anything at all, about them beforehand. Damien wouldn’t be able to do the same tonight. Actually, Carlin added with a wicked smirk, she had made absolutely certain of it. It was good to be the Head Girl.
“Welcome,” Carlin started after tapping her wand to her throat, her gaze not sweeping around the room to include all the students in her greeting but remaining fixed on the wall behind them all. “For those of you adventurous to have them, I hope that you have a pleasant evening with your blind dates, I’m sure. Everyone else, I encourage you to eat, drink, be merry and, most importantly, not to do anything that even I wouldn’t do!”
That list wasn’t exactly long, Carlin mused as she stepped backwards and cancelled the spell on her voice, but anything that she hadn’t done would most likely result in being expelled. After all, she had done many things that she wasn’t technically supposed to. With half-lidded eyes, she lounged back to watch August finish the opening of the dance with his little speech – and he did rather well, she supposed, for a Ravenclaw. Though only a fraction of her attention was on her male counterpart, Carlin didn’t bother glancing around to locate her own blind date. He would find her; they always did.
