The V had taken its toll. What used to be a fairly muscular build was now nothing more than a fleshy skeleton; a handsome smile, now a pallid excuse for a face. It had been what, four months now? No, more like six or seven. Ever since that first drop slid onto E's tongue, he had been a prisoner to the effects. He was a snake to the charmer, hypnotized by the false sense of both physical and mental pleasure.
Though, again and again, he would deny the drug's grasp on his life. Graduation was looming, and more than one of his professors had confronted him about his dismal marks in their classes. Very much unlike Ephraim, he was becoming a shadow. The once bright Ravenclaw with an aspiring future had turned into one of the most pathetic wizards in the school. Still, he refused to accept that fate.
In his left hand, E clenched a cold vile of a fresh dose of the crimson gold. It was time for another delivery. He felt his lip quiver and the taste of bile rise from his esophagus. Ruby Lehane. Over the past few months he'd learned to despise her. He hated her harsh words and her cold way of dealing with people. What he failed to realize was that it seemed to only be him that she treated like this. Like he was some dog of hers that she could control. Essentially, he was. Or, at least he'd let himself fall into that position of inferiority, even when he knew so damn well that it was the road he was headed for when he first agreed to be Ruby's dealer in this process.
What he hadn't figured out yet was what she did with the V. He was almost certain she wasn't taking it. In fact, he hated how she held his addiction over him like she did. It was almost like she had planned it, and Eprhaim had been too stupid to realize it from the start. But now, now he knew what she was doing. At least he had caught onto her manipulation. It was almost so smooth that he envied it. That wasn't the only thing he envied though. Had he not been so quick to fall into her trap, Ephraim had planned some manipulation of his own. It was a little more innocent though, as he'd always been somewhat attracted to Ruby.
She walked around the corner of the castle, and Eprhaim took a step forward. This was the moment.
"No more." He starred into Ruby's eyes as she stopped in front of him. He figured she might assume what he meant, but he wanted to make sure it was clear. "This is the last delivery." He held the vile out for her to take. The two options he foresaw in her reaction were either a calm counter-demand or an irate refusal that this was their last transaction. "Unless... unless you tell me what this is for. Either that, or you cut me in. I want a profit in return, as I'm assuming that's what you are getting from all of this. I can't imagine you'd want it for anything else." Despite his weakened state, he held strong in her presence. This was the moment Eprhaim took his life back into his own control, rather than letting someone else dictate his actions. Or, better yet, rather than letting some damned red liquid decide his fate. "Either way, I'm quitting, so I have no need for the V anymore unless you give me a reason." If there was one thing that Eprhaim was, it was determined, and even Ruby couldn't take that away from him.
