Jack sat alone, in the deep darkness of the forest that rested behind Hogwarts castle. It had been months since he had heard from Riley, which in his mind felt like years. Things had changed so drastically under his feet and here he was sitting alone, trying to pick up the pieces. He had sent her numerous letters over the summer, and the year was about to start. He had decided to apparate to near the grounds with his belongings and spend some time around the forest, reading and gearing up for his final year as a Slytherin. Of course his father would say that being a Slytherin was a lifelong calling, but that wasn’t what he cared about anymore. The only thing that was on his mind was Riley and how he could prove to her that he had been faithful only to her.
Right before the end of last year he had been waiting in Riley’s room at her house, intending to propose to her. He knew it was the right time and he wanted nothing more than to show her exactly just how much she meant to him. But thanks to a disturbing chain of events, Jack found himself with all three of the girls from the Daughters, Riley’s best friends, around him. They began to whisper in his ear the things they wanted from him, and how Riley didn’t deserve someone of his stature. Jack was nothing like this kind of person they wanted him to be, and he fought back. Before he was able to get them away and force his way out of the room, Riley had walked in and burst into tears, throwing the present she had picked out for him at his chest. The girls followed her, and convinced her that he had been the one to start everything with them. The girls convinced Riley that their entire relationship had been predicated on a lie, that all he wanted was to destroy her and make her suffer.
Since that day, he hadn’t received any owls from Riley, despite the many he had sent her, begging her to hear him out. Jack had no idea if she had read any of them, even though he suspected they never even reached her. The Daughters were jealous of their creation of Riley, and even more jealous of Jack. They would stop at nothing to keep them apart. Now Jack sat in pitch black darkness, where he had sat for hours. He had a piece of parchment in front of him, and the lumos he had cast hours ago had gone out seconds before. He embraced the darkness, asking it for strength to write a letter that would get his point across to Riley. Breathing in deeply, he felt a soft surge of energy and grabbed his wand. Speaking the simple spell, the clearing lit up enough for him to bring the quill over and begin to write.
