Kellan deviously watched his aunt the entire time that everything had been happening, and he couldn't put into words how he had enjoyed every minute of watching her stand there in tears at what was happening. He felt no sympathy whatsoever, and was hardly in shock like everyone else at the table seemed to be. He had to admit, that night in the Student Lounge back at Hogwarts when Will had told him what Dylan's last name was, deep down, he really did have some form of curiosity; like his grandmother had said, Caoimhe was not a common last name at all. And, he was a bit taken when Annabelle had finished sharing her.....well....Sarah's secret, but he was so eager for Sarah to suffer that the fact that he possibly had a new family member hardly made an imprint on taking his focus from seeing his aunt cry. He relished in the pain strewn across her face. She was now feeling what he was feeling, or a fraction of it anyway. His father had decided to take her "advice." After he finished his second year at Hogwarts, Kellan would then be home schooled; his father had broken the news to him last night after he and his mother had gotten back from dinner. He cried all night, hating his father, hating his mother for not fighting hard enough, and hating his aunt and the rest of the world. Yesterday had been one of the worst days of Kellan's life. And now, Sarah was the one who was crying and miserable. The only thing that made it that much sweeter was the fact that Williard was crying, and looked as if he didn't even know that he was. This was priceless.
"Sarah, is all that true?" Gavin stared at his sister as if he didn't even know her. Mairi didn't even look up from her plate, and she still had a hand on her head. All Sarah did was drop to her knees and bury her face in her hands.
"It's true then? All of it?" Ptah stared at her, and looked as if he were hoping with all of his heart that she would raise her head and say different. Kellan laughed to himself, though there was no need to really; he doubted if anyone knew that he was even in the room at the present moment. Hell yeah it's true, he thought. You married a stupid, great liar. "I don't.......I don't believe it. No......I need......proof.....of some sort. Something-"
"Ptah, you are not an idiot so please don't pretend to be one," Annabelle said taking another sip of her drink. "If it weren't true, don't you think my daughter would be fighting me tooth and nail, instead of lying helplessly there on the floor?" Ptah didn't have an answer, but still looked disbelieving. And at that moment, a thought came to Kellan, and he smiled.
So his uncle needed proof did he? Kellan got up from the table, and as predicted, no one questioned him, but Williard gave him a look, and through his tears, he knew his cousin was suspecting what he was up to. "Bathroom, prat," he mouthed. He walked at a normal pace right by his sobbing aunt, and once he closed the kitchen door, he shot up the stairs.
About four months ago during Summer Vacation, Kellan had been playing in his aunt and uncle's room, mainly because Will had asked him not to. After he proceeded to open a drawer and throw all the contents everywhere, he came across a book, and a very private one he learned after opening it and reading a few sentences. Well, Ptah had came in the room, and that was one of the very rare occasions that his uncle had ever gotten angry with Kellan. But his anger was more for the mess as opposed to what Kellan had been holding in his hands. After being scolded, he handed the opened book to his uncle but at that moment, Sarah had come in, and after seeing what her husband was holding, nearly tripped over herself in order to get to him and snatch the book from his hand. That was the very first time that Kellan had ever heard Sarah speak to her husband like that. She didn't yell, but there was definitely a note in her voice. He didn't really hear their conversation though; he had moved on and went to find something else to entertain himself. A few days after that incident though, Sarah had told both Williard and Kellan that they were no longer allowed to play in the attic, and that was exactly where Kellan was headed.
He jumped, and pulled down the latch on the second floor ceiling. The stairs slowly descended until they touched the carpet, and Kellan climbed up and immediately set to looking. If he was right, then everything that Sarah was trying to hide, and everything that his uncle needed to know would be in there; other wise, his aunt wouldn't have reacted the way she did when she saw Ptah with her......diary, or whatever the hell it was. After about ten frantic minutes of searching, Kellan hadn't found anything. He looked through a few boxes, checked in corners, and every nook and cranny that was visible to the eye. But then, that's where he knew he made his mistake; his aunt wasn't an idiot. She wouldn't put it somewhere where anyone one could just "happen" upon it. Kellan, sighed and looked around. He knew Williard was probably clocking him, and he'd easily been gone for about twelve minutes now. He hoped Will would think maybe something he ate didn't agree with him, but he knew his cousin knew better. Kellan went to the attic window and looked out of it, thinking.
"Kellan? Kellan, are you up there? You know we're not allowed!"
Freaking great, Kellan thought. He heard his cousin's footsteps on the ladder and turned around, somehow bumping his elbow on the window edge. After doing so, he heard a thump above his head, like something had hit the window softly. He looked up, and there it was. He recognized the old, brown leather book immediately; every window in this house extended beyond the ceiling which left a little pocket at the very top. Sarah must have slid it up there, which now that Kellan thought about it, was a pretty decent hiding place. Though, he had to admit that it was kind of careless. Surely she didn't expect friction alone between the book, the wall and window to hold it up there? She was a very talented witch. Why had she not used a spell or something? He could see the top of Williard's head, and he hurriedly jumped up and slightly smacked the window. The book fell to the ground, but before he could pick it up and hide it, Williard was getting one last foot up, so Kellan placed his foot in front of the book, hoping Williard wouldn't see it.
"What are you doing up here?" Will's eyes were red, and you could tell that he had just wiped his face.
"Nothing that concerns you," Kellan said relaxing against the window.
"Kellan, my mum said we're not allowed up here."
"Well, at the present moment I don't think anything your mother says can be listened to......especially given now that she's showed herself to be a dirty liar."
"Shut up. You don't even know what your talking about." There was a tone Kellan had never heard Williard use before. This would be fun.
"What's wrong Anu? Your mother isn't as perfect as she tried to make everyone believe she was? She had you, your father and everyone fooled, thinking that she was some type of....saint or something-"
"SHUT UP!" Williard had yelled at the top of his voice, and even Kellan had stood up straight. He widened his eyes in surprise and laughed a little.
"Make me." He said it with as much challenge as he possibly could. "Your mother is two-faced. She makes people think that they can trust her-"
"What are you talking about?! You say that like she's ever done anything to you! Every time you and your father have one of your stupid episodes she always helped-"
"Shut up. You don't know what goes on between me and my father." Kellan felt the heat rise in his neck. Thoroughly angry, he bent down and picked up the book, and now didn't care whether Williard saw it or not.
"What are you doing with that?"
"You know full well what I'm doing. Your father said he wanted proof. So I'm giving it to him." Kellan walked passed Williard, and started climbing down the ladder.
"Kellan you can't-"
"Williard, shut up! I swear I can't stand you, or your stupid mother." Once he reached the bottom, he set off for the kitchen, and heard Williard scrambling down the ladder. He walked a little faster, and went quickly down the stairs. He opened the kitchen door, and Sarah was now in a chair, and his father was sitting next to her, holding his sister. Annabelle was still in her same exact seat, and Ptah was standing up leaning on a wall with his eyes closed. Mairi looked as if she were staring off into space. Kellan looked at Ptah, but not before noticing Sarah look at him over her brother's shoulder. He saw her eyes widen, but he continued toward his uncle, determined.
"Sarah, is all that true?" Gavin stared at his sister as if he didn't even know her. Mairi didn't even look up from her plate, and she still had a hand on her head. All Sarah did was drop to her knees and bury her face in her hands.
