He sat half naked in the corner of his room; his breathing had slowed, and his tears had stopped sliding down the sides of his cheeks. He had calmed down, and sighed deeply and slowly. It was over.......for now. That was by far worse than all the other times......but there were no marks......visible marks......and it was over. He thought about his father's face as it happened, and as much as he wanted to overflow with hatred, he was just too tired. He heard footsteps coming to his door and he drew his knees up to his chest, fear replacing anger quickly. He was coming back. It wasn't over. He wasn't satisfied. His eyes swam with tears again, but then........the sound of heels clicking. It was his mother. He let out a thankful, renewed sob.
"Kellan, honey?"
His stomach felt nauseous. "Yeah?" That one word alone sent his hand flying to his mouth. His mother tried the door knob, but it was locked; Kellan had made sure to do that after his father had left.
"Sweet heart I need you to get dressed so I can take you out. You need something to wear to Christmas dinner tomorrow so I figured I'd buy you a new suit." When Kellan didn't answer, she pressed on. "I thought you'd pick out whatever you wanted this time. And then maybe we could go out for dinner or something.......just the two of us. Whatever you want, I want."
He held on for as long as he could, but he leaned to the side, and his lunch came up. He coughed, wiped his mouth, and hastily answered his mother. "That's alright," he yelled. He hated her almost as much as he hated him. Why was she acting like that? What was going on?
"Kellan.........please."
He was still on all fours with his eyes closed, focusing on his stomach to see if anything else would come up. He felt too awful to go back and forth with her, and wasn't his attitude the reason why what had happened, happened again? But then, he didn't feel up to doing anything, or going anywhere either. Tears came back to his eyes, and he fell over onto his back. "Alright......Mom, I'll be right there. I'll be....out in a minute."
There was a pause. "Thank you, honey." He heard her heels clicking away back down the stairs, and he wiped his face. He needed to get himself together. In about half an hour, he had wiped up his vomit (and thanked Merlin that they had hardwood floors), changed his clothes, and threw away his ripped shirt. He was tired, drowsy even, and his stomach still felt threatening, but he grabbed his jacket and proceeded out of his room. He walked slowly down the stairs, but paused when he heard his mother talking.
"I think Ptah was right. We need to be warmer, more loving to him."
His father's voice was calm, but adamant. "Well I think Sarah had the right idea. Kellan needs a firm hand, and that's exactly what I intend to give him." Intend to give me, he thought. But wait, Sarah had suggested that Gavin be harder on him? That could not have been....Sarah was his savior, the one who always told Gavin to ease up and came between Gavin and he before things got really rough whenever she was around. Why would she change up on him like that? But Gavin kept talking and answered his questions for him. "She was very angry with Kellan after he pushed Williard. She even suggested that maybe we take him out of Hogwarts and home school him instead." No, Kellan thought. That could not happen. Hogwarts was his only escape from this place; surely that was going a little too far........suddenly he felt a hatred that he never thought he would or could........he had been betrayed by one of the only people on this earth that he loved and actually cared for.
"Gavin, that's not possible. We can't home school him. Neither of us have the time-"
"We could hire someone. We both know plenty of gifted Wizards that do have the time." Mairi paused, and Kellan prayed that she wasn't considering.
"No. No, I don't like it, and I don't think that is necessary."
"Mairi, Sarah is a good mother. She knows what she's talking about. Look at Williard. He never has behavioral problems." Kellan closed his eyes and gritted his teeth in frustration. Why? Why was he always being compared to Williard? His frustration turned to tears, but Kellan fought it. He wouldn't cry; not because of that.
"You can't keep doing that Gavin. Anu and Kellan are like night and day, July and January........black and white."
"Exactly, and-" Gavin had stopped talking, and Kellan only assumed Mairi stopped him.
"You know, sometimes, it almost sounds like you wish Anu were your son and not Kellan." The golden accusation. Kellan waited for Gavin to say different; he waited for his father to say anything, but when he didn't answer, Mairi sighed and chuckled. "That is............I don't even know what to say to you right now."
Kellan walked down the remaining stairs, and Mairi immediately changed her expression to a smile. "You ready sweetie?" Kellan didn't even look at his father and went straight to the door, but not before Mairi had wrapped her arms around him from behind and kissed the back of his head. He went to the car and got in the passenger seat, and buckled his seat belt. He gave his face one more once over with his sleeve so Mairi couldn't tell that something was wrong with him. She opened the driver's seat door, and slid in. She buckled her seat belt and started the car. They didn't move. Kellan stared out of the window, and could feel her eyes on him. "I love you. So very much. You know that right?"
Kellan shook his head. She rubbed and patted his thigh, and then backed out of the driveway. So, his father didn't want him, and his aunt was angry with him. Well, Kellan was angry too. He was angry and he was hurt; a terrible combination when put together. She tried to take his sanctuary away. All because he pushed her precious son around a little. He hated her, and he would make sure that Sarah would pay for trying to ruin his life.
