He rubbed the glass with a soft, white cloth until it was as dry and as shiny as he could possibly get it. He placed it on the rack and then collapsed into an arm chair, exhausted. Today had only been his first day; that's why it had been so hard and so long; he was still learning the ropes. He supposed he did a good enough job, but knowing that he had made all the little mistakes that he had made frustrated him. But, as long as Tom didn't have anything negative to say, Dylan wouldn't allow himself to feel bad or inadequate. His feet hurt, his hands were sore, and his mind felt like it was in a million pieces.
"You all done here Dylan?" Before he could answer, Tom spoke again. "Seems so. Here." Tom tossed a small, full, black velvet bag into Dylan's lap.
"What's this," he asked.
"It's that nutter Henry's tips for this evening. I had to let him go. He didn't work nearly as hard as you did today."
Dylan nodded his thanks, and felt no shame whatsoever in taking Henry's tips. All day, while Dylan served most of the costumers, washed most of the dishes, and performed most of the other duties that were given to the both of them, Henry had walked around socializing and hung out with costumers. It took all of Dylan's restraint not to throw a bottle of firewhiskey at him at one point. "Is the Leaky Cauldron always this busy?"
"Yup, it is. But just so you know, I'm gonna close the place up on Christmas. Figured I'd spend time with the family. Your more than welcome to come over for dinner if you want."
"Er........I'll thank about it." That had sounded offly familiar, but Dylan didn't entertain the thought.
"You do that. I'll close up. You go on and get out of here."
"Alright," Dylan said slowly getting to his feet. He stretched, and a series of cracks rolled up his spine; it had felt glorious. "Goodnight Tom," he said throwing a towel over his shoulder.
"See ya' tomorrow morning."
Dylan removed his towel from his waist and threw it onto a chair in the corner of his room. He had just taken an hour long shower, and his body, especially his back, had been much appreciative of the hot water. He pulled out a pair of shorts, slid them on, and then collapsed onto his bed.
This really wasn't that bad at all. Sure, the work was a little annoying, but he was getting free meals and a free room; and this room was a damn sight nicer than his room back at the orphanage. He wasn't sure when he had first arrived, but now, he knew that he had made the right decision in doing in this. But, Dylan still had an almost eerie feeling, like something was going to happen or go wrong. But he ignored it, relaxed for the first time today, and allowed himself to fall asleep.
Half an hour later, Dylan found himself unable to stay asleep, and had gotten up, gotten dressed, and was now on his way outside of the Leaky Cauldron. When he got outside, the early morning air was crisp and cold, but refreshing all at the same time, and Dylan welcomed it. It was so nice not being in Bristol, crammed up in his room reading, or staring off into space, or wishing that he were somewhere else or back at school. This time, he got what he wanted. He really was somewhere else, and tonight, he would wander around and take everything in appreciatively.
