Summer had barely even started and already the alley was crowded with people. Not like Duo really knew what the activity level was during the school days, but still it amazed him to see this many people out shopping when none of the students of Hogwarts had even received their letters. Duo hadn’t received his letter yet either, but ever since he had started at his “Private” school all the other children were avoiding him and most of the adults were also, this gave Duo plenty of time to kill and since Diagon Alley was pretty close to the orphanage he may as well kill it here. With a sigh Duo stuck his hands into his pockets and entered Diagon Alley, the archway in the wall sliding shut behind him. He lightly jiggled his pocket and listening to the coins within click together. He didn’t have much, but then again the money the school sent him every summer hadn’t arrived yet either. He hated having to buy everything second hand, but it was all only temporary, when he graduated from Hogwarts he would become one of the biggest names in the wizarding world and he would bury his history as an orphan.
Duo walked casually through the throng, easily sidestepping around any obstacles. He hardly glanced at the flashy displays sitting in the windows of most shops. Duo hardly cared for extra luxuries like those and he didn’t even have the money for them if he wanted them. He grew up without any luxuries, and he didn’t require any now. Duo passed by a few school aged kids running around and drooling at the equipment, most notably at the Quidditch shop, but he merely passed these groups without a thought. He was going into his third year at Hogwarts, and he hadn’t met anyone he would call a friend. The past two years only consisted of going to class and going to detention for constant fighting. He was truly amazed that a school full of witches and wizards could be filled with such weak people.
Duo paused at one of the many cafés set in Diagon alley. All the noise was beginning to give him a head ache and a Butterbeer would do wonders for that. Duo had never been allowed into Hogsmeade, only third years and above could go there, but last year one of the older students had brought back a few bottles and sold them to the younger students. With a simple shrug Duo stepped inside the café and ordered one. He took the offered bottle and dropped the appropriate coins onto the counter and then turned back toward the door. “Hey wait, you can’t just take that out into the street!” Protested the clerk but Duo merely ignored him and stepped back out into the alley. He took a quick chug of the sweet liquid and let it flow through him. He grinned at the feeling and then continued on his lazy way.
A quick visited to the second hand robe shop updated his robes for the next school year and then another stop at the stationary store refilled all his ink and quills. Everything else would have to wait since he required his letter to finish off his shopping list. Duo began to make his way back toward the leaky cauldron but he paused as he glanced at a familiar offshoot to the alley. He looked at the entrance to Knockturn Alley with curiosity. During his first trip he’d had a wizard representative showing him around the alley, Duo had expressed his curiosity about Knockturn alley but the representative had told him that that place was not for those of respectable station. Only lowlifes and thieves shopped in Knockturn. Still, Duo’s curiosity had been aroused but he hadn’t managed to make it back with the representative practically holding him by the hand. Than during his second year he had gone at this alone and had been too busy to worry about Knockturn, but not anymore. With another shrug Duo drained the last of the butterbeer, dropped the bottle to the ground and made his way toward the entrance to Knockturn alley.
