Thunder rattled through the small cabin, the sound bouncing off every brick…wall and ceiling. Cameron Wilkerson bolted upright in the bed. Dark brown tresses cascading across her face, obscuring her vision briefly before shaky hands moved to tuck her hair behind her ears. Dull brown orbs looked slowly around the room as if that was the source as to why she was pulled from her unconscious state. “Miss Wilkerson!” a loud voice boomed at the door to the cabin. Cameron didn’t need to be in the other room to know that the voice was not friendly. Eyes narrowed in detest as she pulled the blanket back up over her head and lay back down. She wasn’t going to be bothered this early in the morning just because they wanted their rent money sooner than expected. “Miss Wilkerson! You are four days late on your rent! Pay now or I will leave you out here in the cold!”
The whiney voice of the elderly witch didn’t frighten Cameron; at least that’s what she kept telling herself as she pushed the blankets off her. Bare feet finding cool stone sending a shiver up her spine as she grabbed her wand. She was cautious…she wasn’t about to let her wand out of her sight…not when she was in a strange land. Pushing the door open to the living room she moved to the front door. Flicking her wand out at her purse, it soared quickly into her hands and she opened the door, not bothering to say anything to the short red haired woman at the door. She shoved a handful of galleons into her hand and shut the door in her face. Turning with her back to the door she slowly leaned back against it, her mind racing as she heard the angry rumblings of the woman as she shuffled away from the door.
What day was it? How did she forget to pay? How long had she been sleeping? What time was it? Cameron put a hand to her head, the world spinning for a moment as a headache slammed its way into her head, reminding her of the most important question: where was her vial? Where was her mind numbing relief? She moved carefully then, her eyes slowly reopening as she started searching through the room, overturning couch cushions and pulling out drawers in the stands. She dumped the contents of her purse on the unused kitchen table. Panic was starting to ebb into her very flesh and bones making her move with purpose…with fear. Ripping through papers, jerking out draws, everything was flying, and within seconds the wand was coming out. Everything was circling around her as she tried to find the small vial that had held her sanity.
Tears were burning in her eyes as her head pounded. Her hands wouldn’t stop shaking and it was obvious that she needed to get more. She quickly pulled on a pair of jeans and a black top, not even caring that she was dressed more like a Muggle than anyone else would be in Hogsmeade. All she cared about was the dealer that would be over at the Hogs Head. They could get her what she needed…she was certain of it. All she had to do was come up with the cash. That shouldn’t be too hard. She still had quite a bit, more than likely enough to get one vial…after that was out she’d have to figure something else out. It wasn’t exactly easy getting into a wizarding bank on the other side of the world, especially when you weren’t supposed to be Apparating Under the Influence of Drugs or Alcohol. Last thing she wanted was to splinch herself.
Waving the thought away Cameron grabbed her pleather black jacket that fell to her mid thigh and headed out the front door. The Hogs Head wasn’t too far and no doubt the sun wouldn’t be too much of a bother, not when the sky was mostly cloudy. All she had to do was get inside. The light was killing her eyes, but as long as she got what she wanted it didn’t matter. As the sun emerged from behind the clouds for a brief moment her whole world turned white and she closed her eyes, a hand rising to shield the sun from her eyes. Suddenly a dark shadow fell across her face and as she opened her eyes she collided with a stranger that she hadn’t even seen. Her head whipped back and the propulsion back from him landed her on her bum in the mud. Hands landing on either side of her body, covered in the same disgusting mud that now was soaking in through her clothes. “Perfect,” she muttered in annoyance as she glared at her assailant.
