Jack Reid walked at a comfortable speed despite the frequent bursts of bitter cold air that hit him. He pulled his scarf up over his mouth and dug his hands further into his long jacket that covered his green tinted robes, showing anyone who came in his vicinity what house he belonged to. It was quite the cold day, but he had needed to get his wand fixed yet again, and since Bronsen hadn’t been able to because of an apparent overload of schoolwork, he had needed to make the trip out to Ollivander’s in Diagon Alley. While it wasn’t that far of a trip, it still was an inconvenience. His wand had been reversing spells back onto him quite constantly, and Bronsen had lately just been nowhere to be found. It was a good thing, too. Jack couldn’t stand even the sight of his youngest brother at times, mainly because of how much he claimed to know, in comparison to how much he ought to know. At his age, Jack had been hard pressed by their parents to learn and know as much as possible. Then Bronsen and August had come in and changed all that. As the older brother he had been shunned and forgotten about, except when Mum and Dad wanted to get out and have alone time away from the kids. Then he’d get stuck watching the little brats. Jack’s mind floated to the early thoughts of his babysitting days, but before it got there he shoved it away. He was headed back to the school to rest before the next day’s classes, and he had no time to dwell on the early hell his parents had put him through
As the last of the leaves that littered the ground crunched underneath his muggle boots, which were perfect for the snow that was inevitably coming, his mind drifted again. It drifted to the past once again, but more recently. His mind stopped on a particular person that had once meant something in his life. Juliet Moreau. She was a sixth year Slytherin as well, and they had met while out at the bar in Hogsmeade, one fateful Saturday night. Juliet had to have been one of the most beautiful women he had met while at Hogwarts, and how he had ended up being with her that night was a fact that was completely beyond him. They had thrown back a few drinks, and Juliet had become a little tipsy, so Jack had helped her back to the castle. On the way back to the school, however, Juliet started to play around a bit and slipped on the ice, knocking herself unconscious. Jack had rushed her back to the Hospital Wing at Hogwarts, and stayed with her throughout the whole night. When she awoke finally, she suffered from slight amnesia, but seeing Jack and hearing his account of what had happened reminded her of the wonderful night they had spent together. Jack held her hand that night all the way through her unconscious state, and had been there as soon as she awoke. What had transpired after that night would be a blur in most minds, because most people would be overcome with infatuation and lust, losing all memory of anything that happened. For Jack, he remembered every detail. He wasn’t about to relive it all over in his mind, but it had been on his mind recently, and some how he wasn’t fighting it this time.
After that whirlwind of events in one single night, Jack and Juliet had been a couple. It was somewhat serious, and Jack took it more seriously than Juliet did. Jack had been happy for the first time in quite a while, and that was mainly the reason he was drawn to Juliet. After about a month of random meetings in the halls, walks to Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, and just being with each other, Juliet approached Jack one day and abruptly broke up with him. After so many walls in his life being torn by who he would have thought could have been someone he spent the rest of his life with, she had ended it almost as fast as it had started. She hadn’t given him a reason, except that she couldn’t see him any more for fear of the man he was becoming. What that had meant, he hadn’t cared about. What he had cared about at the time was trying to figure out how Juliet could drag him around like that. Jack had just stood there, utterly speechless, as she sobbed in front of him. Finally she seemed to have had enough, because she walked away from him, saying simply, “Goodbye Jack.” Those words had hit Jack quite hard, and he found himself sticking to being alone for a good while after that. Why had she all of a sudden just ended what made both of them happy beyond belief? He had been the answer to her questions and problems, and she just wanted to throw it away like that? And what had she meant by the fear of what he was becoming? It didn’t make sense at all what was going on at the time, and after that last meeting, Jack didn’t see Juliet ever again. It was almost like she had disappeared from the school. Maybe she had left the school. Her father was had always been strict, as far as he remembered. Even if she was daddy’s little girl, her father had complete control over her. Juliet had always gotten away with many things, but maybe her father had finally had enough and pulled her out of Hogwarts.
It didn’t matter any more. Juliet was out of his life, and likely for good. Jack pulled his scarf tighter as he walked a little faster. He could see the gate to Hogwarts coming up and wanted warmth. Jack didn’t believe in love anymore. Not after Juliet. He hadn’t believed in it before Juliet, particularly because of his parents and their sick twisted way of dealing with reality. Mum was crazy and Dad was out whoring it up with whoever he wanted every night. Bronsen and August were there at school with him, but he still held the resentment for them because of their parents and the way they treated him after his brothers came into the picture. Juliet had been the icing on the cake to take away the last bit of his idea of love and caring. People constantly would come to him and see what they could get from him, get it, and leave. Even his own brothers tended to be that way. Except they liked to throw in the speeches about how he should be stepping up in the family and taking care of what was broken. He had absolutely no obligation to them at all. Not to Mum, not to Dad, not to his brothers, and especially not to Juliet or anyone else who attempted to “befriend” him. He was alone, and that’s the way he liked it, and wanted it. Love wouldn’t come for him any time soon, if it even existed any more. Jack reached the Hogwarts gate and let out a sigh. It would be a good rest, alone. He swung the gate open and walked through, his eyes focused on getting to the Common Room.
