Cougar took his Alvarez acoustic guitar out of its case. He admired the shine that shone off of the neutral colored wood of the body of Stella Mae, his guitar. He admired the smooth curves of the body leading into the neck and fretboard, and the unique 12th-fret fingerboard design, a custom designed and made emerald Celtic knot design inlaid into the fretboard. He grabbed his Celtic knotwork guitar strap that he bought back home and threw it over his shoulder. Belfast didn't get much better than today with the weather so beautiful and clear in the park. Cougar pulled the ponytail containing his long, silky, blond hair loose to allow the full freedom of his prided hair. He took a few seconds to shake his hair enjoying feeling it blow in the wind as he sat upon one of the benches. He brought his guitar case over so he could set high right leg on his case so his leg would be raised enough that he could set his guitar upon his knee. He reached into his pocket and brought out a very thin, light gauge, sparkling green guitar pick. As he prepared to play by tuning each string one by one, he listened to the vibrations of each string and made sure they matched relatively to the string next to it. After tuning, he played a G-major chord and let it ring into the wind. Beautiful.
He sat for a moment, with Stella Mae's neck in his hands wondering what he wanted to play first. Maybe a cover? But which one? What am I feeling today? How about some Damien Rice. With that, it was decided. He would cover Damien Rice's "Cannonball". As he placed the capo on his guitar, he could feel his nimble fingers slide over the fretboard of his guitar, such an ephemeral feeling. He sat and simply enjoyed the wind in his hair a moment before he finally decided that he was ready to begin his Damien Rice Cover. He made the shape of a G-major open chord with the dexterous fingers of his left hand, only with the capo, it actually wasn't a G-major. He strummed down once slowly, savoring the prolonged voice of Stella Mae loosed to the wind. He leaned over his guitar and began to play the song he intended to play, his hair falling into his face.
"There's still a little bit of your taste
In my mouth
There's still a little bit of you laced
with my doubt
It's still a little hard to say
What's going on."
Cougar continued with the rest of the first verse before the memorable chorus, after which he allowed himself a chordal solo before jumping right into the second verse. As he had his eyes closed, head down, left-hand fingers holding each chord shape before moving on to the next, right hand flying up and down with each strum, he felt peaceful. He was sure the song was helping, but it was peaceful no matter. After two more verses, one of which was impromptu written by himself on the spot, he finished the song, "Cause it's not hard to fall/ when you float like a cannonball." He sat there silently, eyes closed, allowing the final chord to ring out. After sitting a few moment, he immediately started into the next song he would play, another Damien Rice cover named, "Amie". As he readied himself to play the melancholy chords of "Amie", He was genuinely glad to be alive. It was small things and moments like this that made life worth living. He continued and played his soul though the six strings, ten fingers, and on beautiful instrument sitting on his knee.
