Ever since Allison Edwin had first stepped foot into Hogwarts, she challenged herself to one day be able to tell people that she had been in every corner, every room and every square of grass belonging to the castle. Of course, such a thing seemed almost impossible, because there were plenty of secret passageways and hidden rooms that she didn’t know about, and even a few that nobody probably knew about. But nevertheless, Allie was determined to explore everything that she could. She had been in the Room of Requirement, she had sneaked into the kitchens, and she had even been in the Forbidden Forest enough times to supply her future grandchildren with spooky stories for an entire week. But the one place Allie had had her eyes on for years, but had never ventured to, was the Whomping Willow.
Now, she had a good reason why tonight was the first night she had ever even thought of such a task. Well duh, the Whomping Willow. The name says it all. It whomps people. Allie had never been whomped before, but she was pretty certain that she would not enjoy it all that much. But Allie had heard that there was a way to temporarily still the giant tree, and that students had indeed done it before. Deep down, Allie doubted that she’d be able to find a way to do this. She wasn’t planning on attempting anything until she was absolutely sure she knew what to do, and frankly, Allie didn’t think the tree itself was going to 'accidentally' spill the beans. Even so, it was late at night, and Allie had gone through far too much trouble to even get out of her dormitory. Why so late? She couldn’t risk being caught trying to tango with hundreds of branches thicker than her own body. Not that she’d even try to do so without immobilizing it first.
“But how,” Allie breathed. She was standing at quite a distance from the tree, watching as its branches swung about in the moonlight. Maybe she would just sit here and stare at the plant all night. Perhaps she would even fall asleep, and not have to worry about sneaking back in. But knowing her luck, she’d wake up to find her body being eaten alive by whatever creatures lurked the grounds at this time of night. Allie’s grip around her wand tightened at the thought, but so far, the only thing she had seen was a worm on the pathway. She only noticed it because she had dropped her wand and, not being able to see because it was so dark, she had accidentally touched it, at which point she said, “ew” and looked to see what she had just smushed. Then she had proceeded to wonder why there was a worm on the ground when it had not rained, and then she thought of her potions assignment, and figured somebody had dropped it while walking back to the castle.
Allie finally decided to take a seat on the grass. She always felt so much braver in bed, thinking about how much of a thrill it would be to try and jump rope with the Whomper. But of course, now that she was actually here, she didn’t think getting her head sliced off, and every other inch of her body at that, would be all too pleasant. Besides, she knew that thinking about these kind of “adventures” was a product of the dreams she’d have late at night. “Whatever,” Allie muttered. At least she had a grand old time trying to sneak past the prefects and patrolling ghosts in the corridors. And, at least the moon looked pretty. And maybe the lake, though she could barely even see it, despite the moonlight.
