Theo had burst out laughing when Oscar had told him about the dare. Would Jez Cuthbert really do it? Theo didn't know Jez on a personal level, but from what he had heard about the Seventh Year Gryffindor there was little he wouldn't do if it was done in the name of pranking. So, when Theo caught a glimpse of who, without a doubt, was Jez, he doubled over in laughter once more. The real life version was much, much more amusing than anything his own imagination could conjure. Well, Theo thought to himself with a wide grin of hilarity, Jez certainly had guts; he had to be commended for that. He evidently had little shame too - or just a whole lot of stubborn pride in keeping a bet between men.
What Theo found most ironic, though, was that Jez was attending the ball dressed as a woman, and would be paired with a man. Theo, on the other hand, was going to be with a girl. He was gay, he had a boyfriend, and he was attending a Blind Date Ball for heterosexual couples. He'd shrugged at the time when Lori had asked him about it. He was a prefect and he was expected to go to all the school events, be a participant. Anyhow, Theo would go to anything organised for the students and his friends even if he wasn't a prefect. So what if it was for hetereosexual couples? Theo could have a platonic night with a girl, like he did with Lori. Anyway, even if he could've been partnered with a boy, there probably weren't many boys who wanted to be partnered with him. With the exception of Oscar, of course.
Theo had a sneaking suspicion that his boyfriend was actually pleased that he was attending the ball with a girl and not a boy. Oscar knew, then, there was one hundred per cent no chance of any chemistry between them. Even if the girl fell head over heels in love with him on the night, it was not possible for Theo to be entranced by her. Lucky Oscar, he thought to himself humorously and slightly enviously. So he can dance and flirt with a girl and I can't? At least people still thought Oscar was straight. Everyone knew Theo was gay.
The person he had been partnered with for the night was Ivy Tunstall. Theo already knew her for several reasons: as a prefect and captain of one of the Quidditch house teams. Ivy was Captain of Hufflepuff and Theo was Vice Captain of Ravenclaw, so the two of them had met on the Quidditch pitch several times. A match between them recently had concluded in Ravenclaw's win, which Theo had been delighted about. He and Ivy were on less competitive terms as prefects, though. Theo didn't mind being partnered with the older Hufflepuff girl. They now had the chance to know each other more before she graduated.
It took a while for Theo to even locate Ivy, though. Finally, when he found her standing alone, he walked up to her and smiled. "Hi. Sorry for the delay, there's so many people you can hardly walk." Jokingly, he bowed and looked up at Ivy. "I am your partner for tonight, Miss Tunstall. Theo Darke at your service." He straightened and smiled. “And you look beautiful. I may be gay but I can tell a beautiful woman when I see one,” he added with a laugh.
