Three minutes, two minutes, one minute… and we’re off. Gavin packed up his things after charms class as Flitwick told them to continue practicing for homework. Gavin didn’t want to practice… didn’t need to practice… didn’t have time to practice! He had so much work to do; so much work. It was only Monday and already he had a boatload of homework. The teachers weren’t kidding about OWL year, it was no cakewalk. “Sorry dude, gotta split. Look, if I don’t do well this semester my parents will kill me, really. They’re already writing me about my brother’s grades, I don’t want to hear what they will say if I fail anything myself! But I will meet up with you in the Great Hall for dinner. See ya!” Gavin said to his best friend, Eric. The gang were all hanging out that evening, probably going to drop a few dung bombs in the hall by Filth’s office again. Gavin really shouldn’t miss it… solidarity with his friends was really important… but school was important too, right? It was all well and fine for Jheylon and Eric to scrape by but he had never been able to do that…
Slinging his bag over his shoulder Gavin walked toward the library, probably the best place to study in the castle. The common room would be packed with people laughing and talking and the student lounge would be even worse. The Great Hall was okay but people kept coming in and out and it would distract him, at least in the library he could put a big tall bookshelf in between himself and the door so he wouldn’t notice them. Technically his room would be fine but… there were too many things there to draw his attention, plus if anyone came in they may be inclined to jump on his bed and consequently him… again.
As Gavin entered the library he felt again that awkwardness that comes with the eerie enforced silence of the room. Seeing as classes had only just let out Gavin still had his pick of most tables and so he found one by the window that had a shelf blocking his view of the door. On the edges of his hearing were people muttering, muttering to each other and muttering to themselves about what they were reading. He dragged his Care of Magical Creatures book out of his bag along with a half full parchment and began on yet another week’s homework.
When it really came down to it he was getting worn out by all of this… All of this studying… all of these papers… all of this day in day out do it or you won’t pass your exams crap. It was only a little while longer though, already it was almost April and the sun was shinning later and burning brighter and… well he just hoped summer would hurry up. For now though, he had work to do, people to see, and school to experience.
