There is a time when the mind is conscious and yet not. In between the world of Oberon and reality. It is a separation of sorts. When the sub-conscious knows you need to wake up but your consciousness does not want to yet rouse. It is a hypnotic trance. When the outside world and the sub-conscious mind can dialogue with one another. It is also five minutes before your alarms goes off. This is where we join our hero. Chace could hear the morning noise of the world but he could also hear his mother’s gentle voice. Soon the clock tower would strike eight times and it would be the sign, the call to get out of bed.
Today was a Quidditch practice and Chace hoped that everything went well. The practice did not start until after lunch however he did not want to oversleep. There were still a few loose ends that needed to be finished before then. When the first of eight tolls rang he was awake. He was too anxious to oversleep. Ivy was going to be present and she had a few ideas herself but he felt as though this was his practice.
Sneaking out of his room so as not to wake his roommates, his eyes fell on Seth. Chace hoped Seth could find his way to the pitch without Chace’s help and smiled. He’ll be fine. There were a few early birds in the common room but for the most part Saturday mornings found the common room empty. Chace was not surprised. If he had his way he would still be in bed but today was an important day. In all honesty, it was just a normal practice but Chace had planned some special things today that he hoped would go over well. He hadn’t even told Seth was he was planning today. Hiding it from his best friend had been hard to do but it had been worth it.
One of the nice things about the Hufflepuff dorm was that it was not far from the Great Hall. Or the kitchen. Many a Hufflepuff could be found bothering the house elves late at night in the kitchens. It was a joke between the Hufflepuff prefects Chace had heard, if you could not find someone more than likely they were in the kitchen. Chace pushed the door to the Great Hall open slowly. He did not want to make a big show of his presence. Not today. He swiftly found something to nibble on at the Hufflepuff table and left the Hall before anyone could have a chance to talk with him. He had things to do people to see.
His first stop was Hagrid’s cabin. The grounds had been getting a lot of rain lately so the ground was muddy and hard to traverse. Luckily, Quidditch was played in the air. The sky was overcast and threatening to rain at any moment but this did not deter Chace. Sometimes, the greatest games were held in the rain. Besides, it would just make the afternoon that he had planned more interesting. Making his way though the bog he knocked on Hagrid’s door. He heard Fang bark and then Hagrid coming to the door. Seeing that it was Chace, Hagrid handed him a box. Chace promised that he would be good and set off for his next destination. He needed to pick up some things from Madam Hooch.
Before he knew it, it was lunch. He secured his treasures in the Hufflepuff locker room and headed back to the castle for a quick and light lunch. Seeing Seth with Lara and Willow he found a seat beside them and ate. He needed his strength for today’s practice. He looked up and down the table and saw other teammates. They had no idea what they were in for. The very thought of it brought a smile to his face.
Finally it was time. The sky was still overcast but the light was bright and grey. It was a good sign. Chace could hardly contain his excitement as the team trickled onto the pitch. Chace stood with Ivy and surveyed their team. They had a good team this year and were neck and neck with the other houses for the Quidditch cup. At this point, it could go to anyone. Chace was confident that with diligence and a little luck the Quidditch Cup would be found in Professor Sprout’s office next year. Behind him was a large pile of something with a gigantic drapery hiding the treasure. He could see some of the players eyeing the pile with questioning glances. They would have to wait.
“Good afternoon!” he said as soon as the last player was gathered. “I’m glad to see you giving up your afternoon to be with us. Listen up; we are so close to winning the Quidditch Cup this year that I think we have a good chance at winning it. Maybe we’ll win the House and Quidditch Cup. Then no one can say that Hufflepuff is the weak house. I have devised some things to do today that hopefully you’ll find amusing,” he said with a chuckle. Now that his teammates were staring at him his was less sure of himself then he was this morning. “Ivy has thought of something to do with the Chasers and it was my responsibility to think of something for the rest of the team. But I hope she doesn’t mind if I borrow the Chasers for a while.” He smiled at Ivy. Turning back to the team, “I have full confidence in your abilities as a team and as players. This practice is about having fun.”
He turned away from his team and looked at his pile. Grabbing the drape he pulled it dramatically. Unfortunately, it didn’t have the effect that he desired. It was so big it took a few tugs before it was completely off his things. It was hiding two wooden boxes, one which read: Caution, Live Creatures, and several engorged beach balls. He looked at his team with a stupid grin on his face. He reached into the box with the writing on the side and pulled out two little cages. Inside were bright blue insects. “These are billywigs. Professor Hagrid was gracious enough to loan these to us. Our Seekers get to have some fun with theses little buggers. I’m going to release them and you get to chase them. I’ve set up a barrier around the pitch so they can’t leave but they should entertain you for a while. However,” he looked at the rest of the team, “they can sting. Their sting induces giddiness. It’s up to Sita and Finn to find them and protect us from getting too giddy. He opened the cages and the indigent insects flew away as fast as possible.
"In the other box,” he indicated it with his hand, “Are several dozen balloons filled with bubotuber pus. As you may recall from Herbology, bubotuber pus causes boils when in contact with human skin. The Beaters’ goal is to try and hit us, the Chasers, the Keepers, and the Seekers with these balloons. That’s Carson, Sydney, and Billy. Finally,” he went over to the large beach balls. “These are for the Chasers and the Keepers. Ivy, Sophia, and I will play as Chasers while Seth and Kael will play as Keepers.” The balls themselves were not so big that you could not see over them but you had to hold them with two hands and use your whole body to throw one. “I’ve Charmed them so they will not break. However! if they touch the ground they will explode. The object for the Chasers is to score on the Keepers and the objective of the Keepers is to make the balls touch the ground.” He looked around with a huge grin on his face. They must think I’m crazy, he thought. “The most important thing today is to have fun! Mount your brooms and let’s get to it!”
