Kendric was almost unbearably excited and found himself walking surprisingly fast this afternoon. It was a beautiful, early spring day. The sun was shining a most pleasantly warm glow, most of the greenery around Hogwarts had begun to return and flourish, the air was fresh and sweet. New beginnings were all around, and Kendric could not wait for his own new beginning. Of course he had already seen the Gama Room when it was finished a few days ago, but he hadn't been back since, though he could hardly contain himself as to not come back until today. He walked the path along the first floor corridor, and continued along past his classroom hurriedly. When he reached the tall, slim oak door at the end of the hall, he anxiously stuck his wand inside of a small chamber below the door knob; this door did not have a regular key because Kendric's own wand served as the key. This way, no one could enter the Gama Room without him. There was a tiny but audible click, and the door opened inward, and a very new, almost dank smell had hit him as he walked inside. The Gama Room was the very same size and look as his Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, except one of the walls were made of a complete, thick layer of glass. A few feet away in front sat four rows of lush, deep purple chairs, all squeezed together and on an incline, and right in front of the chairs sat the Simulator, a machine that simply looked like a fancy, upside down steel funnel sticking out of the floor. Next to the glass wall, about two feet away was a tall, metallic green door which Kendric approached quickly. He opened it, and the strong metallic smell of the Amaritasium filled his nostrils and almost made him cough, but he was preoccupied, completely marveled by the look of the material.
He closed the door and just as he did so, students had begun pouring in and settling into chairs. "Good afternoon to you all," Kendric said walking to stand behind the Simulator. "You all know why you are here, so let's get started shall we? First, this machine in front of me is called the Simulator. You all see this spout at the very tip? This is where you will stick your wands in tips first. When the machine is finished analyzing your wand, a yellow spark will shoot from it, then you promptly remove your wand and enter that door over there," Kendric said pointing to his left. "That door will lead to that room," he said pointing to the glass where some students attention had been since they entered. "Please, come down and look through the glass to get a proper look." Once everyone was down and had a spot on the glass wall, Kendric began talking again. "That room is called, the Core. The metallic substance you all see is a substance called, Amaritasium. It's derived from Boggarts and works directly with the Simulator to form the different scenario's you all will be in. And, it is also through this glass wall that you all will be able to view each other go through challenges, almost as if you were watching a film. Correction......exactly as if you were watching a film. Now, I think that probably concludes the tour, not that there was much in this room to show you to begin with. Back to your seats if you please everyone."
Once everyone was seated again, Kendric once again stood behind the Simulator. He simply smiled and stuck his wand inside of the machine in front of him, and within three seconds, a yellow spark flew across the room, and he promptly removed it. "Watch," he said as he made his way to the entrance to Core. He opened the door and the same smell as before had hit him, stronger even, but he didn't acknowledge it that much. He was to excited. "Do you all see that small black platform in the middle of the room? That's where you will go, and stand directly on it. The simulation won't start unless you do. Make sure you pay close attention as I go through this demonstration. After today, you each will get chances to do this." With that, he closed the door behind him and began walking slowly. His feet sank into the Amaritasium, but as he kept walking and looked back, he noticed his footprints had disappeared. He walked a little harder, but there was no bounce; it felt like he was walking in kneaded clay. He reached the platform and gave the class one last look through the glass wall before he stepped on, and in a very chilling rush of wind, a sensation Kendric most certainly wasn't prepared for, the glass, the Amaritasium, everything had disappeared.
Opening his eyes, having had to close them because of the immense chill, Kendric found himself now staring at a wall. A dusty, cracked, grimy , paint- chipped wall. Completely immersed and damn near breathless at what he was now seeing and feeling, Kendric ran his hand along the wall, a trail of dust falling to the floor in the wake of his hand. "Excellent," he breathed to himself. It worked.
He turned around; he was inside a dark room, lit only by a small single candle that sat on what appeared to be a desk, and then, one of the most horrid stenches that he had ever smelled had filled his nostrils and instantly went to work on his stomach. He covered his mouth and nose with the inside of his elbow and walked across the room. The floor creaked with his every step, but his foot falls were completely muted by what felt like liter. He picked the candle up by it's holder with his free hand and held it up. He was in an office of some sort, but he couldn't tell much more than that. He sat the candle down and retrieved his wand from his pocket. "Lumos," he said raising it high in the air. The moment he did so, he slightly started at the sight before him.
There was a bloody, half eaten corpse layed out in the very center of the room, completely mutilated to the point Kendric couldn't tell if it was a male or female. The area around it, papers, books, shreds of clothing, all stained brown from blood. Clearly, whoever this person was had been dead for a few days now, and what a horrible death it was. Revolted but calm, Kendric knelt a little and observed what he could. An animal had obviously done this, given visible teeth marks on what was left of the corpse's left leg, and the flesh, the tissue, muscle....clearly ripped away. Kendric stood up and took a step back, and when he did, he stepped on something and almost fell over but he caught himself. Using his lit wand, he saw he had tripped on the victim's arm, which had evidently been gnawed, and then Kendric saw what he needed to see. The hand of the limb was in almost perfect condition, except there were seven long needles going through the palm. He bent down, and very carefully pulled one out. It was about ten inches long, and when he tried to bend it, it wouldn't budge, which only meant one thing. "Fowler," he said silently to himself. He stood up, now very much alert, and took in the rest of the room. The desk was completely trashed and had papers scattered everywhere, and the floor was the same way; books and papers about, shelves and cabinets knocked over. He only just noticed the office door which stood ajar. He walked towards it and immediately stopped and readied his wand. "Nox," he said lightly, extinguishing his wand light, and he took a step back.
There was a pair of huge, glowing, pale yellow eyes peering at him through the space between door and door seal, and then he heard the lowest, most menacing growl he had ever heard in his life which made the hair on his neck stand and a strong shiver run down his spine and hover at the base. Adrenaline began flowing throughout his body and despite the current situation, a smile crept up on his face. But reasoning caught up with him, and he realized that there was only a good four feet between the Fowler and himself; a distance the animal could cover quickly and effortlessly. This room was entirely to small, and he knew he couldn't successfully defend himself. Not in this room. The eyes slowly sank towards the floor, and he knew what it was doing; it was getting ready to pounce. Once the eyes stopped and got as low as they could, Kendric flicked his wand, and the door was slammed shut in the creatures face and was now magically sealed. He turned and examined the room, but no sooner had he done so that the Fowler had started charging the door, horrible thuds filling the room with a force that any human that tried to do so would probably kill themselves on the first hit.
There was nothing. The room was a perfect square. It had no windows, no other door. It was just him, the mess, and the corpse. Then, Kendric heard a loud crack, and saw that the creature had succeeded in knocking a hole through the door, but much too small for it to actually fit through, and was now working on expanding the hole with it's long teeth, chomping through the old oak wood surprisingly fast, and Kendric saw his chance.
"Ablindo!"
The spell hit the Fowler right in the eyes, and it recoiled, shaking it's head wildly. Kendric used the time to once again scan the office. There was no where to go. The only way he could escape was through the office door. The Fowler seemed to recover and with sickening force, charged the door once more sending it flying. Kendric had to dodge to keep from getting hit. Clearly, the animal was now angry. Sight was one of the Fowler's strongest weapons, and now, it had been cut in half. He quickly cast a Disillusionment Charm on himself, and rolled out of the way and into the corner. The animals teeth missed his ankle only slightly before it's face hit the floor where he was just sitting. The animal looked in the direction where it had seen Kendric had rolled, and it stood there, front down, rear up, it's tail rod-straight, sticking up into the air. While Kendric couldn't render himself completely invisible, he could cast one hell of a Disillusionment Charm, and knew given the Fowler's now less than perfect sight that it couldn't see him which is why it was now statue still.
Even though his mind and body were buzzing, Kendric couldn't help but think the massive animal beautiful; it's silver fur glimmering in the dim candle light, it's eyes, slowly examining the area where Kendric was against the wall. He would love to have a Fowler as a pet, but knew it wouldn't go over very well with the Ministry. Then, the Fowler took a step forward and sat, as if it were an obedient dog. It looked absolutely magnificent, but then Kendric realized what it was doing, and tried to brace himself but was too late.
He had heard them hit the wall beside him first, and then pain shot throughout his left leg and rose to the very top of his head, and Kendric had to purse his lips and then bite down on them to keep from yelling out. The Fowler had shot it's fur at him, and he had felt every last needle shoot right through his left thigh, but he still kept as still as he could even though he was in agony. But apparently, the animal still didn't see him. Kendric's mind raced. What if it decided to shoot it's fur again? But, it didn't. It took a step forward, and it started running it's huge paw along the wall searching, it's nails making a muted screeching noise. Kendric eased out of the corner, using the noise as a cover, but he fell, unable to put weight on his leg. The animal turned at the noise, teeth bared.
"Ablindo!"
The spell had once again hit the creature in the eyes, and it was now completely and utterly blind, and it fell back thrashing. In the process, one of it's nails caught Kendric's face slashing his cheek, and blood now ran very warm down the side of his face and neck.
"Wicendo! Wicendo!"
His new found pain had caused him to cast the spells frantically and in quick succession. Both hit, and he notice the Fowler's fur start to curl a bit.
"Wicen-"
The Fowler had stopped thrashing and was now coming at Kendric in impossible speed. He pointed his wand at a knocked over file cabinet, and swung his arm with all his strength. He heard the impact and moan from the creature when it hit, but Kendric found himself flying through the air too; his forearm was caught in the animals mouth, it's jaws were locked, and Kendric let out a deafening scream.
He had been in pain before, but nothing like what he was experiencing now. His wand fell from his limp hand to the floor, right on top of what used to be the face of the mutilated corpse, and then Kendric noticed his position; The Fowler was on his back on top of the days old dead body, the file cabinet was on top of the Fowler, and Kendric was on top of the file cabinet, arm still locked in the creatures mouth. The file cabinet plus Kendric's weight was probably what was pinning the animal down, which made it obvious; this Fowler was a female. It could effortlessly throw Kendric and the file cabinet across the room, but it didn't. A male would never allow itself to be in such a vulnerable position.
It started to jerk it's head as if it were trying to rip his arm off, and Kendric couldn't scream anymore; the pain was too great. He felt sweat fall into his eye, but he didn't blink. He had to do something. The Fowler jerked his head again, and he literally felt his forearm begin to give. He reached down to his left thigh, and hesitantly grasped the needles sticking out. He tightened his grip, and he pulled fast, and with all his might, and the blood that fell from the needles sprayed his face. Breathing steady but hard, taking in great gulps of the foul air, he waited for the Fowler to still it's head, and when it did, Kendric brought the needles down fast and hard, plunging them into the Fowler's right eye.
It howled loudly and let go of Kendric's now useless arm. It thrashed once again, knocking him off onto the littered floor, and with his good arm, he grabbed his wand, which was sticking out of the corpse's mouth.
"Wicendo," he said forcibly, but the spell missed. There was no way he could aim properly in his current position. He dragged himself on his elbow until he was able to prop himself up against the wall. He watched the Fowler shake it's head wildly the way a dog would shake a chew toy. He aimed his wand again.
"Wicendo! Wicendo!"
Both spells hit and the creature was now completely vulnerable, and it still shook it's head wildly. Kendric took aim again.
"Faliso!"
It was a direct hit, and the sound was loud and terrible. The Fowler stopped thrashing and it started to sway, it's blind eyes unfocused.
"Faliso!"
Another loud, terrible sound, and the animal fell onto it side unconscious beside it's former victim. Kendric let out a heavy sigh, relieved, and let his wand fall beside him.
It was over. Just like that. Over.
Then, it got inexplicably cold, and wind filled the room, but Kendric didn't close his eyes; he was too weak to. The cold made his eye sockets and the front of his head ache, but he only closed his eyes when a blinding white light took over, and he had to shut them.
Then, all was still and warm, and it was all gone. The pain, that awful smell, now replaced by the earthy metallic scent of Core. Kendric opened his eyes and found that he was once again staring through the glass wall at his class. He looked down at his leg, and there were no needles. He examined his right forearm, and it was whole and healthy. He brought his hand up and touched his left cheek, and there was no gash, no blood, no sweat. Somewhat relieved and completely amazed, he stepped down off of the platform, and even though he knew he was healed, he fully expected the horrible pain he had just experienced to return, but it didn't. He walked across the Amaritasium and opened the door, pretty much stumbling through because he hadn't gained his bearing's yet. He closed the door and settled against the wall beside it.
He had no words. He was in complete and utter amazement right now, and all he wanted to do was be alone and collect his thoughts. "You all will start simulations next week. Those of you that wish to continue, that is. I hope you all payed attention and learned something from this. Dismissed. I will let you know the order of which you all will go."
He closed the door and just as he did so, students had begun pouring in and settling into chairs. "Good afternoon to you all," Kendric said walking to stand behind the Simulator.
