The week had started out well. So that wasn't true. He had skipped Herbology and it wasn't even his fault. No, he could blame that on little JJ Weiss. It was his fault that he missed his class. Not that he really minded, but both Professor Sprout and Professor McGonagall seemed to mind. He had been given a week worth of detention. That was like water off of Rex's back. A week? That was nothing. At first Sprout and McGonagall could not decide whether he should be punished by helping Professor Sprout spread fertilizer or help Professor McGonagall find the missing needles from her first year classes. Those first years lost their needles rather quickly. Rex would not have minded either one and they seemed to sense this so they ended up sentencing him to the library. Madam Pince had thought of the most boring job she could and gave it to Rex. He was to sit in the back of the library in a back room and go through centuries worth of parchment, updating the records. Some books had been damaged either by water or fire, some books even had been damaged by other books. Some books the words were too faded to even read anymore. It was an awful job. Madam Pince sent him back there when he got there after dinner and then let him go hours later. It was most likely the worst detention that Rex had ever received at Hogwarts.
But it had been worth it. The reason that he was skipping Herbology was so that he could spend time with Harmony. Rex was unsure if Harmony had received detention or not. He had tried taking all the blame on himself, saying that it was his fault and not hers that she missed class. Rex didn't get to hear the final ruling as that was Professor Sprout's call being that Harmony is a Hufflepuff and all. He hoped that she didn't receive detention. And if she did, he hoped that her detention was better than this! Sitting in a little unknown part of the library and updating the records. She was too fragile for detention. She wouldn't make it through. Rex had been made for detention. A period without Rex in detention was a rare one indeed. Usually Billy was to accompany him in detention but as it was he and not Billy that had been ditching class, Rex was the one in trouble and not Billy. Billy had asked him over and over again what had happened that day. Why had he missed Herbology? Granted, it was class, but it was a class in which Gryffindors got to spend time with Hufflepuffs so Rex would have been able to see Billy. Rex had blown of the question, merely stating that "Something came up." Rex wasn't quite sure why he was hiding that fact that he had spent that period of time with Harmony, but he was. And for now, it was going to stay that way.
Finally, Madam Pince came and let Rex go for the night. Rex jumped up and run out of his little prison. He didn't bother putting any of the materials in their proper place. He would be back tomorrow night anyway. Once outside of the library, Rex saw how late it was. He often lost track of time being inside all night long and doing the same thing. The corridors were deserted and the sun had long set. Rex assumed that it was close to curfew and so he turned toward the Gryffindor common room and journeyed that way. He didn't want another detention. Not yet. As he was walking down the corridor he passed a tapestry that hid a well known slide down to the second floor. Rex paused at the tapestry and thought about going down the slide. He could use some excitement after his detention, but that would mean it was that much closer to curfew. And then he would have to come from the second floor. More stairs. But it didn't matter. Rex jumped on through the tapestry and slid. The only problem with this slide was that it was pitch black and there was no way to control your descent. But it was fun. Rex felt the air rush past him and flood his lungs and it felt good to be alive once again. All of a sudden the tapestry on the other end hit his feet and lifted revealing the second floor corridor. There on the other side was also a boy. A boy! Rex couldn't stop himself, he knocked into the other boy and the two slid across the corridor to the wall on the other side. Once stopped, Rex jumped up and blurted, "Sorry about that mate!" Rex recognised the colours of his robes to be that of a Hufflepuff. They were the ones that you wanted to run in to. But not literally! Rex extended his hand to help this boy up. "I am really sorry."
