Marian waltzed out of Madam Malkin’s shop, the tinkling of bells following her as the door shut. She was mildly pleased with herself and the bag she now carried containing her new school robes. It wasn’t often her parents accompanied her to Diagon Alley and gave her money to buy things. The money, of course, was for a specific purpose, but she chose to ignore this in light of the brief freedom she was given. She wasn’t sure where they had gone, or why they even decided to come along. She pitied them. It was obvious they were completely weirded out by anything pertaining to the wizarding world. But they were slowly adjusting for her and she appreciated it.
She was in desperate need of new robes after she sprouted a good inch or two over the last year. It was pretty embarrassing at the end of last year when her robes started showing off her ankles. And unlike the easy-to-fix Muggle attire she was used to, she was forced to deal with the ill fit of her robes until she had the time to buy new ones. It was times like this when she thought back to her days in Muggle public school and actually missed it. Three years. She could hardly believe the time passed so quickly. Never mind, she didn’t really like those people anyway.
Diagon Alley seemed much busier than usual, and Marian regretted choosing today to shop as several people knocked her in the shoulder. She nearly dropped her bag. Her eyes were scanning the crowd for signs of her parents. She figured they would stand out in their Muggle attire. They didn’t give her any clues as to where she might find them when she was done and this was beginning to frustrate her as she searched for them. She set off toward the Leakey Cauldron. Her eyes browsed through store windows, shopping mentally while hoping to catch a glimpse of her mother’s dark hair or her dad’s red shirt inside. She saw neither and the distraction was costing her. More people began to bump into her, muttering rude comments under their breath. It was her fault, but she was stubborn and only found herself saying sorry to the people not grumbling.
She stopped in front of Eeylops Owl Emporium, tempted to go in. Finneas would be pleased with her if she bought him something. Her barn owl wasn’t eating well and it was her fault. Her parents didn’t know how to feed an owl and she wasn’t helping them out much. As a result, Finn was bitter with her. Biting was frequent. And he started delivering her mail late. If this went on much longer he might destroying things in her room. But what to get him? Would she even have time? She feared her parents would wander past the Emporium and she would just miss them. So she stood outside the window, probably looking loony as she stared, mentally debating.
