Daddy dearest,

The journey to Hogwarts was uneventful, though I must say I was hugely relieved to be seeing the back of Mum’s family. Those insolent brats rather unruly children of hers wore me down and you know me, I put up with them without complaint because at the end of the day I was a guest at Mum’s house and a guest is always polite and gracious. It was good to see Mum of course, and at times I must say she did try to spoil me rotten but she just doesn’t know me like you Daddy, she doesn’t know what I like and don’t like and I just couldn’t let her try and buy me. You were on my mind all the time Daddy, I missed you terribly. You know how uncomfortable it is at Mum’s with that husband of hers (I really can’t call him my stepdad; even that name connects him to me and we’re just not connected). Besides, I just can’t have another male figure in my life after you.

Don’t feel too terrible about not being at the train station, I did miss you but I know it’s hard for you to understand the magical world. Much as I hate to ask you for this, I will need you to forward me some money, you see I’m approaching an important phase of my magical education and next year I will be sitting some very important exams, life-changing ones actually according to some of my teachers. I’m going to make you proud Daddy, even if it’s not in a way you really understand, but Mum’s just never really taken an interest in my magical education or much of my activities really, but I forgive her, I understand how busy she is with her children and husband. It’s just hard having no-one to discuss certain things with though I do appreciate you trying to listen and doing all you can. I don’t need anyone or anything as long as I know you’re there, Daddy.
