It was a few days before Christmas and August could not wait to go back to school. The trip home had been an odd one. That's for sure. He was supposed to ride with his brother Bronsen. But he wasn't in the mood to wait for his younger brother. After waiting for exactly three seconds, August thought he had waited long enough. He left for the train by himself. It turns out that Bronsen had already left for the Express so he wasn't left at school. Don't worry. August boarded the train and ran into Ezzie Mendez. At that point, August was mad at her, well more annoyed really. The last time he had seen her she was looking very sick and he decided to take her to the Hospital Wing. August knew that Madame Pomfrey would just want to help her and wouldn't care how she came to be that way. All Ezzie seemed to care about though was how the media would react to her being in the Hospital Wing. As if the media would care if a young girl was sick! Regardless, Ezzie had brushed off August's help. August left that situation feeling angry and used but he really wanted Ezzie to be okay. Therefore, when the two met on the train it was awkward but August ended up sitting with Ezzie in a compartment with Ethan.
Presently August found himself looking at the announcement of Ethan's funeral. The card was decorated very nicely and the font was easy on the eyes. August could not, would not believe that this could be the same Ethan that he had met a few days before on the Hogwarts Express. August didn't spend a lot of time with August but he seemed like someone who August could get along with. Or he could have been. August would never know now. The owl carrying the announcement came during dinner. The envelope was addressed to August and he was glad for a reason to excuse himself. Dinners had never been the same since last Christmas. Although, if he really thought about it, dinner had never been the same since he found out that his father was a liar. The Reids were traditionalists in that dinner was with the whole family. None of that instant stuff next to the telly. The five Reid members had to sit at the table. Everyone had to be present and no one was excused before anyone else. When August found out that his father was and had been cheating on his wife and then August was forbidden to speak about it, dinners became very awkward for August. Then when he dared to tell his brother Jack, it made things worse not better. Jack already disliked his father and this gave him even more reason not to trust him. Now that their mother was insane, dinners were unbearable. She either muttered some incoherent sentences or sat absolutely silent. Either way was awful. Plus, during the winter holidays the seating arrangement was exactly the same as it was any other time so Jack's empty chair made it glaringly obvious that he was still at Hogwarts and their father did not approve.
Thoughts of Jack reminded August that if Ethan had stayed at Hogwarts he probably would be alive today. August would have to send a letter to the Jacob's family with his condolences and also thanking them for allowing him to excuse himself from dinner early. The owl with the letter arrived right during the main course and his father tried his best to ignore it. But this obviously was an owl with a mission. It would not be ignored. It started hooting and tapping its talons until August's father finally let August leave the table and read the letter saying, "Your brother's not here, you're receiving letters, of course you can be excused. I guess we'll never have a 'normal' dinner ever again!" That suited August just fine. Their three hour long dinners got rather tedious and boring after August turned six. He held the announcement close to his heart as he flopped his body on his bed. And there he lay until he fell asleep, just thinking.
