Iris slowly closed her eyes as she loosened the grip of the pillow over her head. Silence. She never thought such a thing existed in her house. There was always someone arguing or slamming anything that had hinges. Rubbing her temples gently, Iris rolled over on her back, her grey eyes staring at the ceiling. Her parents must either had left to different parts of the house, or were actually gone. Luckily, Sean was out of the house, which meant the stress level of her parents were low. Iris couldn’t understand how her brother’s mind worked. He had a problem, but wouldn’t accept it. Wouldn’t not being able to sleep, having uncontrolled anger, or emotional mood swings be obvious signs? Why couldn’t he just accept the fact that he was bipolar? There are almost over a thousand people in the world that has the disorder, and they took medicine for it. At first, Sean had to be taken to a psychiatric hospital for months to be tested. The doctors even showed him the results of the in chemical balance in his brain. So, her brother had been released, given a special drug to help. It worked…for a while. Actually, it made him completely quiet, which was strange because Iris only knew him as loud and obnoxious. Though, you didn’t see her complaining much about it. Every time she walked into a room he was in, Sean would flee without a word. It was quite nice, until he decided he didn’t need to take it anymore. That was the start of all the fighting between her parents. It was the start of an all new hell for Iris to live in. Luckily, she hadn’t gone insane…yet.
There was a loud knock at her door, shaking the wood on the hinges. Iris opened her eyes, cocking her head to the side. The door shook again followed by a maniac laugh. “Go away you psychotic freak!” she screamed loudly that the four walls surrounding her bedroom shook. Sean just laughed that high pitched laugh, calling her a foul name before knocking even louder this time. “Dad!” her voice shrilled, the whole house shaking this time. Her father had to hear that from his den down the hall. Even though Iris was a quiet person, she had a big voice. “Sean! Leave her alone!” There was silence for a moment, but her heart was still beating loudly. Sighing, she curled into a ball on her side, burying her face into the comforter. Iris felt empty as her blue eyes stared at the white carpet on the floor. She rarely felt anything lately. It was like all her emotions were sucked right out of her own soul. Grabbing her teddy beer snuggles from the floor she hugged him tightly, closing her eyes, hoping to sleep through this. It was a good thing she couldn’t feel anything at the moment. That was probably the only thing that was keeping her sane all these months.
The silence didn’t last for long. Arguments rang through the halls of the house, reaching Iris’s ears. Groaning, she sat up from her bed, her legs dangling over the edge of the mattress. Iris buried her face in her hands wanting to cry, but kept the tears in. Crying was a sign of weakness to her. It was alright to let out a few tears here and there. Now wasn’t that time. Standing up from her bed she slowly walked out of her bedroom, trudging down the stairs. Her father was standing in the middle of the kitchen, his face all red from anger as her brother tried to provoke him. Iris’s mother Anne was doing the dishes, trying hard not to pay attention to the scene unfolding in front of her. “How are you going to pay for all this crap you keep on buying?” John asked holding up a new black cauldron that was used for potions during Professor Snape’s class. “I don’t know. How about you pay for it fatty?” Iris growled under her breath at the comment. Her brother was so rude. “Shut up Sean!” she said her voice stern as she glared at him. Sean didn’t even acknowledge her, but rather continued on his rant for something. Iris crossed her arms across her chest as she watched her mom try to contain the tears in her eyes. They weren’t giving in. “I hope you all die! You’re just a waste of space!” Without another word, there was a loud crack and he disapparte out of thin air. Iris stared at her mother who had fresh tears sparkling in her eyes. “I can’t keep staying in this house, John! I’ll move with Iris to an apartment somewhere where he doesn’t know…” Iris felt her mouth go dry. What did her mom mean? John just ignored his wife, leaving the room to go upstairs to lock himself in his den. Iris stared at the hardwood, going over what her mother said.
