Brianna lay on the ground, the sound of owls and crickets all around her, as she tried to close her eyes to sleep. She was sprawled out on a bed of foliage. All she wanted was to be as far away from her house as possible, but after the short drop down a hill, she stayed where she was. Her breathing was fast and her body was sore. Running...running...running. It was what she had been doing for the last 20 or so minutes. Getting further and further away from her home, her parents, and her destiny. However, the further she went away, the closer she seemed to be getting to the dawn of the new day, the day she finds out who she is to marry. The very day she meets the man, whom she's never even seen before. Her breath catches softly in her throat as she feels the hot tears well up. She didn't want to be married to someone she didn't know. She didn't want to be forced into someone else's arms...bed...life when she didn't know who they were, whether they were kind, mean, or unjust. Why couldn't she fall in love with someone and live life like that? Not that she believed in love or even sought it out, but that wasn't the point really. She had other things on her mind. Life was supposed to be exciting for a coming of age witch. Opportunities opened up all around her and that's what mattered most. She was able to apparate at this age, move from place to place without walking, without needing to take a train or anything like that. She would be an adult, one that could do whatever they willed in the wizarding world, without limits, without someone to hold her back. But...but that wasn't how her life was going to be. She was to be married and placed into a home, and job that she had no use for. This man she could be marrying could keep her under lock and key for the rest of her life and no one would be able to save her...ever.
A wolf sounded in the distance and Brianna started quickly as she forced herself to her feet. This had to be the most daring thing she had ever done in her life and it was something she would always look back on as the last resort to escaping her destiny, running from a path she hadn't chose or wanted. Life stopped suddenly in front of Brianna as she found herself face to face with what appeared to be a rocky wall that extended all the way around her only path of escape. Her dark eyes extended down the length of the wall, never finding an end to it. She looked back at it and quickly grasped onto it, trying to will herself to climb over it, but as soon as her hands touched it, it sent a shiver up her spine and it was as if she couldn't move. Magic...of course it was magic. It was a trap to keep her there, to keep her from running out on a family pact, on a family reputation. The thought hit her hard as she realized if they found her like this, in midst of trying to escape she would bring shame down on her family. Hot tears stung her eyes again and suddenly she was released, by what she was not sure, but it was definitely something or someone that had. Her eyes looked back at the wall in sorrow as she realized she had to go back. Had to face her destiny head on, just like she had always planned on doing. It was fear that had drove her to get this far. Fear of the unknown that made her want to leave her world behind when she always told herself that she'd be strong and just deal with the path that had been chosen for her. Now she remembered that pact she had made with herself long ago and as the words rang through her head once more her feet turned away from the wall and began the slow trudge back to her home.
I promise that I will not bring shame upon my family for fear of the future before me. I promise to meet this obstacle in my path head on and hope the gods bless me. the words repeated over and over in her head, as her feet cut through the underbrush softly and quietly, her head hung in shame and humiliation as she realized that no matter what her family would realize she was gone. She only hoped she could smooth things over enough that she didn't bring a bad name to their reputation as a great and honorable wizarding family. Honor...I have little honor for my name and my grandmother will soon remind me of that when I return. Shamed them I have and they will curse me for it. Hopefully this man will still want me after I've brought shame upon my name.
