The road. That's all that could be heard. The road. Not that the road could make any noise by itself. No, not the road, thought Skyler, the tires on the road. Skyler and his father were driving along in silence in what Skyler had recently learned was a "primitive muggle gadget."
"Oh yes," Skyler's mother had said previously that day, "there's so much better means of transportation. There's flying, floo powder, port keys, and the ability to apparate." Skyler raised an eyebrow. His mother let out a sigh. "Someday you are going to have to talk with someone. Whether you like it or not, the only way people get to know each other is by striking up a conversation."
"I do talk." Skyler simply stated. His mother knew better than to try and argue even through she wanted to. Many times she tried to force an argument out of him to no avail. He had made his point and did not see why he need to support his statement. Everything he said was absolute truth, at least from his point of view.
"Of course, you won't be able to apparate until you're seventeen," his mother continued. "Oh yes, you have to pass a test. But I wouldn't worry about that now. You've got a ways to go."
Skyler recalled this conversation with his mother while driving in the "muggle gadget." Until recently he would have thought nothing of driving in the car with his dad. Up to that point he lived his days one at a time. He didn't think much of when an object would suddenly be lifted into the air whenever he got upset, which wasn't often. Skyler liked to be in control of his emotions at all times and when he was angry he could feel himself losing control. Therefore he thought it perfectly normal to see strange things happen when he was emotional he thought it happened to everyone. He recently learned that it didn't.
When a gray owl delivered a message to Skyler, asking him to go to Hogwarts, his parents decided it was time to till him his history. His mother was a pureblood witch. His father was not. She had gone to Hogwarts when she was a girl and then met his father shortly after her graduation. "Think of that American show," his father explained. "Oh, what's the name dear?"
"I beg your pardon?"
"That American show with the witch and the mortal husband..."
"Oh yes, Bewitched."
"Think of that show," his father said, "when you think of us. I had no idea she was a witch until we had been dating a few years."
"And before we were married, we agreed to live in the muggle world," his mother added. "Oh yes, we knew that if we ever had children then there was a good chance that they would be special. I mean all my children are special," she said while glancing at Skyler's four year old brother. "But, special. We knew that you had powers when strange things started happening."
"Oftentimes that's the only way that we knew if you were upset or not," his father chuckled. "By seeing which object flew, how high, and how loud the crash was when it landed." Skyler did not find that amusing. His mother sensing this said:
"You're going to like it there. Trust me."
Now driving in the car with the newly bought book in his lap, Hogwarts, a History, Skyler's head was spinning. A new school, new people... a new life. There was just one word to sum it all up: "Wow."
