Alex sighed, a content sort of sigh with a hint of boredom. She fingered her new, short hair and enjoyed the feel of it for the first time at school. She had cut it the day before when she visited the Blackfire Mansion for the weekend and now that she was back for school, she loved the reactions from people. Most of the houses had no idea who she was, or even cared, but they did smile at her when they saw it. Alex looked down at the floor when people did this, not enjoying the fact that they were perfect strangers who were noticing how much she loved her new hair-do. It looked good, she had to admit. She had been worried that if she cut it she would look just like she did when she ran away from home 4 years prior, but it didn't at all. She looked older than 15 and, personally, enjoyed the easy up-keep. Less to wash in the shower and less to charm before classes or a date with Pyro.
In her goodmood, however, Alex was still rather bored. She couldn't find Pyro anywhere and she really wanted some kind of company! It was frustrating when she wanted someone to talk to, but was too shy to meet anyone new. So, with another sigh, she made her way to the Student Lounge. There was more chance of seeing a Slytherin she knew there and the common room was much too long a walk. She entered and saw no one she knew. Another sigh. She walked in and took a seat in the corner, as she usually did, next to the fireplace, which wasn't lit in the spring season.
A glance around the room and she noticed the wizard chess set was empty of players. She bit her lip. Might as well practice. She stood again and walked to the chess set, getting comfortable in the chair as she set up the peaces for a solo-game.

India peered round the Student Lounge door with a bored expression on her face. That little Devil had gone off somewhere again, and she wanted to know where he was exactly. No doubt causing trouble again. Half a smirk and half a sigh threatened her lips, and she drew them both down with irritation. India could easily be in her bedroom or the Library, revising something or other. She could be practising her Transfiguration, a Charms hex, or maybe even reading up on Runes. The thought may not seem appealing to anyone else, but India was a workaholic, after all. Her eyes scanned the almost empty Lounge, eyes coming to rest on a familiar face in the corner, by the thankfully unlit fireplace. Alexandra Ricci sat alone, seemingly playing Wizard Chess by herself. India stared at her momentarily, observing the shorter hair, the guarded eyes filled with concentration as they looked upon her chess pieces.
What did India know about Alexandra Ricci, or Alex, as she was known to some. A Slytherin in her year, she was pretty reserved, but not so much as India, of course. India had only exchanged a few words with Alex over the last five years, but she preferred her type to some others. There were some girls in Slytherin that India abhorred with passion. Those, you could say, were her enemies. She preferred to stay away from them, but India was always up for a catfight. No doubt she’d win… But Alex was not one of them. India then recalled that Alex had a boyfriend, by the name of Pyro Blackfire. He too was in their year, a Slytherin. Quite a dominating presence, she supposed. India had never spoken to him, not even once. Not that she particularly cared. India had never been a social butterfly. More like a lone wolf.
India supposed she could humour Alex. She herself was admittedly bored, and India could stand Alex for company. Just about. India wasn’t planning being social though. Wizard Chess just seemed like a good idea right about now. It took out the boredom, the incessant niggling to do something education. Plus she was so hungry, but India was intent on no food. None at all. It was just one of those days, where her mind rose to block her stomach pains. Chess, India thought, was a good way to hone one’s mental skills too. She herself was a skilled player, but she had only ever really played with Duke, and he preferred his shooting and hunting. Muggle sports. It had always struck her how odd it was that a wizard like Duke would love such a… pointless sport. But he was very passionate about it, and India just left it at that. She was not about to question him, ever.
Deciding that competition in Wizard Chess was much more fun, much more of a challenge, than playing by oneself, India stalked into the Student Lounge silently, and made her way over to Alex. Approaching the table, she stopped short of the free chair, before addressing her fellow Slytherin. “Alex.” She acknowledged. Hi and bye weren’t words in India’s vocabulary. “You up for a challenge?” India’s eyes indicated the chess, her voice quiet, but firm, doing her best not to sound too cold, too impolite, too unfriendly.

Alexandra's eyes narrowed in concentration and the tip of her tongue settled between her teeth. It was quite sad that she had to concentrate this much when all she was doing was practicing with herself, but she was that bad. How many times had Pyro beat her at this game? Her pieces were borrowed, usually, and so they never trusted her. Pyro had had his for years and they made a great team. Alexandra thought it would be great for him to finally beat him at the stupid game.
That's when a voice beside her broke her trance and she jumped in surprise. Looking up, she saw india. Alexandra and India were in the same year and therefore shared a dormatory. Alexandra nodded to the girl's question. She wouldn't mind a real game. She just hoped that India wasn't as good as Pyro.
((sorry it's so short. I don't have a lot of inspiration))

India took the seat opposite Alex graciously, a blank, unfeeling expression on her face. She didn’t feel the need to seem superior and cocky, or confident and arrogant. She’d just play the game like she always did: with a wall of ice on her face. That way no one could read her thoughts, and she didn’t need to rely on manipulating others with snide comments. India always won with her skill. Despite India’s typical Slytherin traits, one thing she wasn’t was a cheater. She had always had a vast amount of pride, and though malicious and always needed her own way, India achieved that through anything by cheating. It was just wrong. India believed in fairness, though she didn’t admit that, and she was once again drew to the night that she was sorted into Slytherin. The night she had first entered Hogwarts, to a new life, to put the Sorting Hat onto her head and wait excitedly for its result – no doubt she would be in Slytherin, India had said to herself with delight. She belonged there, and nowhere else.
To India’s surprise, the Hat had not only taken a long time deciding where to put her – even longer than Skye, whose sorting had taken a mere minute – and to her absolute astonishment and fury, the old thing had proclaimed she would’ve made an excellent Gryffindor. She had “pride” and “honour”, or something, the Hat had spoken. Knowing she could not have said anything aloud, India had screamed in her head that she would never, ever be in the same house as her sister. Never ever. And of course, India Nightingale belonged in Slytherin. She wanted to be in Slytherin. India thought she remembered the Sorting Hat sighing in her ear (or was that her head), before shouting “Slytherin” to the rest of the room to hear. Unfazed, India had slipped off the stool and happily joined the group of Slytherins who were clapping at their table. At the time, she couldn’t help a single smirk of pride. She’d made it.
Zooming back in on the game of chess she was playing, India’s eyes focused on the several pieces on the table. The one thing that annoyed her the most were the pieces that were almost alive, sometimes with minds of their own. India preferred to use muggle chess pieces, despite her never wanting to return to the muggle world. It was not because she had grown up with muggle ways, but because that way she could focus all her attention on the game, rather than be preoccupied with wrestling your King of the other Queen, or something stupid and time consuming like that. Calculating the game plan in her head and observing Alex’s tactics and moves carefully, India flicked a lazy hand subconsciously as she spoke, moving her Bishop two squares diagonally left. Silently, she bade Alex have her turn, settling back into the chair to watch the game proceed.
((It's all right, I understand what you mean, lol.))
