Carson walked out onto the Grounds at the perfect time. It was exactly five thirty in the evening, and there was no better time to come and paint the sunset. He looked up at the sky, shielding his eyes from the sun just enough so it wouldn’t hurt his eyes, but he could still see just how much time he had left until the sun would really set. He knew the exact spot he wanted to paint, and it was pretty far away. Being just near the Forbidden forest, Carson’s secret spot was pretty far off the path of a normal Hogwarts student. He hauled his large canvas (where the view of the rocks and the cliff were already sketched) and box of paints and brushes along the wet grass of the grounds. He inhaled the crisp autumn air and smiled. How he had waited to come out here again. The last time he had been out on the grounds was about a week and a half ago, on the weekend before his friend Ethan had broke up with his girlfriend Ezzie. Normally, the break-up between his friend and some girl would be no big deal for Carson, as with Ethan such things happened often. This time though, the break-up had caused a huge impact on Carson and Ethan either didn’t notice or didn’t care how hard it had hit his best friend. He did always think that Ethan and Ezzie were good for each other, but that wasn’t the reason for his grief. He was upset because of Ezzie’s best friend Casey. His relationship with this girl sounded much like it came out of some sappy love film (Carson hated these kinds of movies) that made teenage girls cry. Casey was Ezzie’s best friend and Carson was Ethan’s. When Ezzie and Ethan were dating, they would spend loads of time with each other, often times bringing along their friends. In the beginning, Ezzie and Ethan teased Carson and Casey about how cute Carson and Casey would be together. Both had dismissed the thought with a laugh or a dirty look to their friend for even suggesting such things. Eventually though, Carson had actually grown to like Casey and looked forward to spending time with her. Once Ethan and Ezzie were over though, their time together had been scarce. Ezzie hated Ethan and Ethan hated Ezzie. It was like Romeo and Juliet all over again. It made Carson sick just thinking about the complete cliché he was living in.
As Carson approached the cliff, he noticed the sun setting over the horizon. It looked so beautiful, and Carson would be able to capture it. He found himself a particularly large rock and propped the half finished painting against it. He laid out his paints and picked a fairly thick brush to paint with. He laid out some reds, oranges, yellows, and even a pink color onto his pallet. He waited for the sky to turn just the perfect shade of deep orange and then he began. He started with the yellow and blended it with the red. He blended the orange with the pink and the pink with the yellow. He swiftly ran the brush through the sky in the drawing and before long; his canvas practically mirrored the sky above him. He smirked as he began to paint the water, this time adding blues and greens and purples onto his pallet. He remembered jumping into that very water some days ago. That was the day he had spent his first evening with Casey alone. It was a trick played by Ezzie and Ethan to try and bring them together and it surely did. He remembered laughing and having a good time. The sheer randomness of the entire night was the most amusing part. One minute they were trapped inside, playing the ever so boring game of Monopoly being watched by their best friends and the next, they were in the water of the Black Lake swimming about and far beyond the view of Ezzie and Ethan. If only he were there again, if only he could go back. But it was damn near impossible now, and the only thing Carson could do to stop himself from going crazy was paint. He glanced back at the water to make sure the color was right and continued to paint again, not noticing the person who was standing just behind him. He had no idea there was another person on the face of the earth, let alone on the face of that cliff.
