The Winter Holidays were nearly here! It was the second weekend in December-the week before they were to finish school, and go back home. Or, in some cases, stay in school for the holidays. Sophia herself would be going home as usual-back to Manchester, famous for it's rain and lack of decent snow, even at it's coldest. And any snow that did appear always turned to brown slush before it had time to settle properly. However at Hogwarts, up in cold Scotland, there was always excellent snow, and this year was no exception. And todays snow, aswell as her lack of work due to it being so close to the winter holidays, were the two reasons why she was actually outside on such a cold day.
Sophia loved this time of the year, being able to play in the snow. She was still very childish, despite being nearly 16 now, That was a scary thought...16 sounded ooooooold. And it meant that it was only a year until she'd be legally an adult in the magic world! And it was only six months until her OWL exams...which she didn't feel prepared for at all! She was more prepared than she was last year, by far, but it was still a daunting thought. She hoped to at least pass the majority of her subjects, preferably at least 7 of them. Potions and DADA were her worst by far so she wouldn't pass them most likely, but she wanted to get at least As in all the others. Preferably Es and Os. She did want to be better at her lessons, it just still didn't come easily to her. Even after 4 1/2 years. She was determined to do well though, whatever happened.
The snow was so much fun! She'd always loved the snow they had at home when she was little, however little there was. It was even fun just to walk around in it, making footprints in the soft white H2O. Footprints reminded her of that poem she'd heard in her primary school...despite it being a religious poem, it was still lovely. About going along the metoporical path of life, and there are two sets of footprints-supposedly representing yourself and God, and then when the difficult stages are reached there is only one set, and it is assumed it is then that God abandoned you, when really it was when he was carrying you. It also reminded her of a "Winnie the Pooh" story, when himself, and Piglet, are searching for "Heffalumps" and they're going round this tree. More and more sets of footprints appear, and they think it's heffalumps when it's really just their footprints from previous times they've been round the tree.
Yup, making footprints in the snow was fun, but it got tiresome after a while. She found a bench to sit on, thinking of what to do. Eventually she decided to do the one thing she actually could do-build a snowman! She certainly had enough snow...nobody to build it with mind, but she would cope. She started gathering snow to make into a large ball, for the snowman's body. Yes, this snowman would be a biiig snowman. She had a lot of snow to work with, and branches from the trees and bits of wood to decorate it with to some extent. Well, she could make arms, and break up branches to make buttons and eyes and a nose and whatever. It wouldn't be the best as she didn't have that much stuff, but it would be good.
After not so long, she was well on the way to getting enough snow together to properly build the snowman. To be honest, she was surprised no others had sprung up since the snow fell. And nobody else was around...maybe they all thought it was too cold out here? Well, maybe somebody would turn up soon...she would like some company. Someone to talk to, and someone to help her with the masterpiece. She doubted many older students would be interest, and many would find her very odd for building a snowman at her age, but whatever-she thought it was fun and she had nothing better to do with her afternoon. Actually...when she concentrated she could actually hear someone coming her way...she wondered, stopping in the middle of the snowman, who it could be...
