Rin was sitting on the ground next to one of the fountains, reading a letter she had finally received from her brother Kuramu. He seemed to be doing just fine, just busy as always, and planning to visit England very soon.
Dear Little Sister, I am so sorry you have not heard from our mother and father as of late. Father is supposed to be returning to Japan very soon, but he has not mentioned how mother is doing at all. I only heard from Auntie that she has been suffering from a slight fever, but do not worry, she will be doing just fine before you know it. I am going to be sending you a few trinkets that I bought at the Cherry Blossom festival to cheer you up. I wish you the best of luck on your end of the year exams. Iyashii sends his love.
Your Brother, Kuramu
Rin folded the letter and stuck it in her pocket with a smile on her face. She had waited to hear from her brother for five days, but assumed that he was very busy with work. She was glad to finally hear from him and it sent a warm feeling all over. She opened another envelope, this time from her Auntie.
Dearest Torinasu-chan,
I do not remember if I had written you, but your mother is ill. She is suffering from a mild fever, and we expect her to make a full recovery. She sends you her love and apologizes for not responding to your many letters. But how are you dear? How is school going? I hope you have made many friends and maybe even a few boyfriends? Oh I hope so! That would really send a bee in that stubborn father of yours’ bonnet. Oh listen to me going on and on, I wish you the best on your final exams, darling and we will see you very soon!
Hugs and Kisses, Auntie
Rin had to keep from laughing out loud, her Auntie was such a character. She thought for a moment, boyfriend? She was only thirteen…she did know anything about…boys. She let out a kind of nervous giggle and folded the letter back, shoving it also into her pocket. She looked around the courtyard at some of the other older students, were they involved in romantic relationships? The thought made her blush like a little girl.

It was rare to not have a letter from Adam. Usually, her cousin sent a letter each week, with little messages from her younger sister or advice from her aunt. But over a week had passed and there was no letter. It was odd and Kia didn't like odd unless it came from her. It felt like something was wrong, but if something was wrong, surely Adam would have sent a letter? No, Kia reassured herself silently. Nothing was wrong and she was being childish to think that there was. What she needed was some fun, or some relaxation. But it was still so hot. Kia wrinkled her nose delicately. She didn't like such unnatural heat. She'd burn and look like a lobster and then Maryn would laugh at her. Despite the horrible thoughts if burning in the sun and walking around for hours with bright red shoulders, Kia couldn't resist the thought of sun and quietly slipped out of the common room with her bag slung over her shoulder. Kia looked around, noting all the groups of people and the couples nestled together, and sighed. It wasn't the perfect sight for her to see at that moment but at least she could stay away from them. Rather than sitting in her usual spot under a tree, Kia took a space near one of the fountains, enjoying the quiet sound of the water. It was the perfect sound to relax to, especially for a girl who bounced around so often people sometimes wondered if she could relax. Kia leaned her head back, feeling a small amount of water soak into her blonde hair and enjoying the coolness it offered; a nice contrast to the heat she could feel on her skin. She hadn't even dipped her quill into her bottle of ink, let alone started to write to her cousin, when she heard a sound; like someone was rustling paper. Kia arched an eyebrow curiously, abandoning her letter to lean round to see the other side of the fountain. Was someone there? Kia leant over too far and overbalanced, blinking up at a dark-haired younger girl. Yeah, someone was definitely there, Kia answered her previous question sarcastically. "You're red," Kia stated, showing no sign of finding anything odd about almost falling on a young girl. After all, it could happen to anyone. Right? ((Not my best post, I'm afraid, but I kept getting interrupted so many times I lost my patience with the world in general ))

Rin blinked at the blonde girl who almost fell smack on top of her. She had seen the girl once or twice before, but could not recall her name, year, or House. She smiled and rubbed her nose, already embarrassed that she was blushing at all.
“Oh, I know,” she laughed, “My Auntie wrote me and well…the letter just…seemed…silly.”
Was the letter silly, or her behavior altogether? She mentally slapped herself and forced the idea of dating out of her mind. She had final exams and as her father would say she “needed to have her priorities in order.”
She shook her head slightly, “I’m so sorry, how rude of me, not introducing myself. My name is Rin. I’ve seen you around school before, what is your name again?”
She rose to her feet and helped the poor girl up, offering a smile. She wiped her brow and looked up at the blazing sun. It was fairly warm outside and Rin was glad she was wearing shorts and a loose t-shirt. She looked down at the shirt and remembered when she bought it. It was in Sendai last year and her brother Iyashii had taken her to get ice cream and she saw on a street vendor’s cart. It was a stupid shirt, a pink cotton tee with a cartoon boy with thick glasses and buckteeth with the word “otaku*” sprawled over it. Her brother thought it was mildly amusing, while Rin could not stop laughing.
“You’re in Gryffindor, right?” Rin asked, turning her gaze back up to the other girl.

Kia grinned slightly and nodded, understanding the girls predicament. "Letters from home are sometimes embarrassing," Kia agreed laughingly. "I can't remember how many times I've turned red because of something my Aunt has written to me. But I stopped blushing over them after my second year because you just adapt to them after a while." Actually, Kia mused, it had always been Adams letters that provoked the brightest shadce of red from her. It simply wasn't right to have her cousin, a boy whom she considered a brother more than a cousin, tease her about her love life, or lack thereof. Especially since he now thought he had someone to tease her about. But at least she could ask a few very pointed questions about Finn in return. It always felt good to get revenge on Adam for teasing her and her sister so much, especially when Aunt Amelia contributed her Ravenclaw brain and made the revenge even better planned and more satisfying.
"Not rude at all, Rin. After all, I forgot to introduce myself too and I'm older so I should have thought of it first." Kia rolled her eyes, offering a self-mocking smile. "My father would be quite horrified at my lack of manners. I'm Kia Brightstar. Kiana, technically, but everyone calls me Kia unless they're angry at me." Kia informed the girl chirpily. She accepted her helping hand gratefully before brushing herself off and striaghtening the creases out of her skirt from when she had toppled over. Really, Kia shook her head slightly, no one would guess she was a gymnast judging merely by her lack of grace at that moment. Her teacher, Ren, would have been severly disappointed in her if she had seen that. Kia almost winced at the very thought of it. Both she and Ren had hot tempers if pushed; not a good combination, but Kia respected and liked Ren. The woman wouldn't take any sarcasm or disrespect and had a commanding presence that Kia rather envied at times.
"Yep." Kia nodded. "A Gryff. It doesn't run in the family though, not like in some families. You know how some families are almost always put in to the same house? My family is a mixture of every house. My cousin and Aunt were Ravenclaws, my mother a Gryff, my uncle was Slytherin, another two cousins were Hufflepuffs. I think I'm only the second Gryffindor in about four or five generations but I reckon my little sister will follow in my footsteps and be a Gryffindor." She was rambling, Kia noticed with some amusement. It was a bad habit of hers, but people always just told her to shut up if she bored them. Well, some people did. Others were either interested in her ramblings or thought she'd take offence from being told to be quiet. But taking offence over something so trivial was ridiculous and only made life seem shorter. Why be offended wshen you could laugh?

Rin chuckled lightly, this girl reminded her of herself. “My Auntie is just like that, always trying to play matchmaker. She’s tried to set my brothers up with about a thousand girls each. They just laugh at her antics, but I suppose I’m just not use to being on the receiving end. My brothers don’t usually ask about my –ahem- love life, neither does my father. It’s usually my mother and my Auntie who sit around the kitchen giggling like they were thirteen all over again!”
She blew a stray strand of hair from out of her face, “But I suppose it’s all in fun and love, after all. I guess I’m not exactly like my Auntie who was a very popular girl when she was at Hogwarts. My mother was too, but my Auntie made a bit of a name for herself, I’m afraid. She probably had more boyfriends than classes!”
Rin clutched her sides and doubled over in laughter. She remembered her Auntie’s crazy stories of when she was in school. The long list of boyfriends should have been published, if nothing else.
“My family is pretty mixed up, too. My mother was a Raven as was my Auntie. My brother, Kuramu was a Gryff. My father and my brother Iyashii were both Slytherins, as am I. But, I think I was placed in the wrong House, actually. I was rather surprised that I was not in Gryffindor or Ravenclaw. But, I suppose it’s the fun of being Sorted, not knowing what to expect,” she took a breath, “I have three sisters at home, and who knows where there going to be Housed. It would be nice to have at least one Hufflepuff in the family, though. Just to shake things up. I can see my father just rolling over and dying if one of his children were in Hufflepuff. Hm, to be honest, I couldn’t care less about Houses, or Sorting or any of that; they should just have one big House and put everyone in it! I’m sure it would cut down on the fights, if nothing else.”
