Jake sat down in one of the chairs sitting near the fire. He had sent his father a letter about what had been happening to him this year, and all he had sent Jake was a letter from his mother saying that his father hated the owls in the house and didn't want anymore letters.
Jake understood that his family hated him, but he just couldn't get over the fact that they would treat him like this.
And ruby hadn't sent him a letter all year...
Jake crunched up the letter he held in his hand and threw it into the fire, watching it curl and blacken as the fire licked the sides of the paper.
