"Happy birthday to me. Happy birthday to me. Happy birthday dear Bry-yce. Happy birthday to me." He sang along as he hummed the tune over and over again in his head. He wasn't really all that egotistical, but when it came to his birthday, Bryce was always in a good mood. Valentines' Day was the best day of the year, and he couldn't have been more excited that it just so happened to be his birthday. Brianne had always had a different opinion about their birthday, and Bryce had always joked with her and said that she wasn't loving enough to be born on such a holiday. But Bryce enjoyed it. It became part of him. Being born of Valentine's Day had always seemed to help him appreciate the simplicity and yet the power of love. Of course, this past year had taught him a lot about love too, and he recalled how he spent his last birthday with Weetzie. This year though, Weetzie was not so much a part of his life. They had never truly gotten over the kiss that he forced on her, but Bryce was at least relieved to have Ash by his side. She was teaching him a lot too.
Today though, Bryce had tons of other things on his mind besides Ashley and Weetzie. He had been in charge of organizing a school-wide flower sale, and today was the day that he had to get all of the flowers delivered. It took a lot of planning and work from his end, but Bryce couldn't have been more excited to help spread the love by being part of the flower delivery. Just hours earlier, he had made his way to the owlery with dozens of roses of all colour. In fact, each colour had represented something different, ranging from friendship to love, and even the occasional black one that symbolized one's enemy. Bryce had actually decided to send Luke a black flower, not because he was his enemy, but because Bryce thought that black was the manliest of all the colours, and there was no way he was sending Luke anything that might give someone the wrong impression. Having Ashley blame him for hitting on Luke was the last thing Bryce needed at this point.
If everything went as planned, all of the owls that he had tied the roses to were supposed to deliver the many flowers all at once during lunch. Bryce hoped that along the way that none of the flowers would come untied. He'd hate to be responsible for lost flowers and someone not getting what was supposed to be sent to them. But, he figured that the owls knew what they were doing by now. After all, they were entrusted with important documents all the time, weren't they? Bryce let his worries escape him as he made his way happily toward the Great Hall so that he could see the grand entrance of owls right when the clock struck noon. He was all smiles, and as he passed people in the hall he would shout out the occasional holiday greeting. "Happy day of love!" he'd say. Or, "Look out for Cupid!" It truly was a wonderful day of the year.
Finally reaching the Great Hall, Bryce found himself a seat at the Hufflepuff table. It was nearing the time when everyone arrived, and also closing in on the time he expected the owls to arrive. A few minutes passed, and then he heard it. The swooshing sound of beating wings could be identified from the ceiling, and in swooped the first of the owls. A couple here and there soared down to the tables, some delivering packages and letters, but many of them carrying the colourful flowers. Bryce watched with a smile as more and more filtered through into the Great Hall. Then, one of the owls even came to him. It dropped a yellow rose on his plate, and he saw that it was from Ivy. He then looked up to see some of the other students receiving their flowers, and the smiles on their faces were enough to make Bryce smile. "Happy Birthday to me!" he said again to himself as he enjoyed the happy spirit that seemed to fill the Great Hall.
