Working gingerly, Brantley wrapped the parchment around the thin glass vial that held the potion that would completely eat away the parchment if it came in contact. The cryptex Brantley had constructed was something that Da Vinci had invented, although the word ‘cryptex’ was one Brantley had created to shorten the actual device’s name, it was the same one. The hollow cylinder was like a bicycle lock. You needed a five letter word to access the contents inside. If you forced it open, the glass vial would break and the potion would eat away the parchment. Of course, the potion and parchment were minor upgrades, having originally been papyrus and vinegar. Brantley had also upgraded it so no spell could break it and keep the message intact, at least no spell below his standard. Above it was another story. Brantley set the message inside its slot and then slid the slot into the cylinder. Instantly the lock clicked. A satisfied smile crossed Brantley’s face as he picked the cryptex up with both hands. “Let’s see if the code worked, Leonardo.” Brantley whispered to his owl which was perched on his bed post and watching with interesting eyes. Brantley twirled the dials with his thumbs, spelling out the code. Once the last letter was in place, the cryptex clicked and the cylinder loosened its tight grip on the vial. Brantley grinned and closed the cylinder once more. Leonardo hooted and flapped his wings before fluttering over to the cage near the window.
Brantley leaned back on his bed while looking the cryptex over in his hands. It was perfect. It was perfect for his plan. A smile crept across his face at the thought of his plan. He knew there was a ball coming up, he had heard talk about it from one of the Prefects. And he knew who he wanted to take and he knew who he was going to ask. Brantley continued to turn the cryptex over and over in his hand. It was a miraculous work of art, truly. Da Vinci was indeed a marvelous man. Actually, Da Vinci was Brantley’s idol, a man Brantley looked up to greatly. He was the master of puzzles and Brantley could only dream to be that good. Brantley sat up in his bed and pulled open the drawer to his bedside table. In there was a box big enough to hold the cryptex, Brantley pulled this box out and set the cryptex inside it. He closed the lid and traced the design of the quarter moon on it. His father had carved it and given it to Brantley when he was younger. Now he was about to give it someone else who he knew would cherish it just as much as he did, because she was like that. Brantley placed the box into the drawer again and shut it before reclining on his bed. His hands behind his head, Brantley watched Leonardo peck at his brass cage.
There was a peaceful silence in the Ravenclaw 6th year boys’ dormitory until the door opened and another person joined Brantley in the room. Brantley tore his gaze away from his owl and looked at who had entered. It was Jamison Parson, the Prefect for their year and gender. Brantley nodded a hello before turning his gaze back to his owl.
((So, if you’ve read the Da Vinci code, then you obviously know the word ‘cryptex’ was invented by Dan Brown. Since Dan Brown didn’t write “The Da Vinci Code” until 2003… I just said it was a word Brantley had come up with. He didn’t though. Credit goes to Dan Brown.))
