Padme desperately needed a get-away. Some place where it was serene and calm, not abruptly exploding with giggles or shouts, or having people rant about purebloods and mudbloods. She was sick of all that. She needed a place where she could think only of her own thoughts, not someone else's. Classes during the day was torture; they numbed her mind and made her eyelids droop. After that experience, she often wanted to find a quiet corridor by herself, but once she was alone, she found herself wishing she had someone to talk to. Friends had never sounded so wonderful. What would it be like to know that, no matter what happened, someone would always be there for you? Would understand you? Padme didn't even understand herself. Half the time she hated her mother, Tessa, and half the time she needed her love. Half the time she wanted to be a Slytherin and half the time she doubted herself. She wasn't the Padme she used to be. She was a different one, a one who constantly doubted herself and her actions.
At night, Padme could relax. She felt all that tension from the day slip away as she settled into the covers. But that didn't help her ease away to sleep. No, she would lay awake for hours, staring at the ceiling, listening to her dorm mates snore away. Tonight was no different. Even breathing filled the room, along with the rustling of blankets. Padme envied them for how easily they could leave this world of reality. She envied them more than she envied anyone else. For they were peaceful. She was not. After a few restless moments of tossing and turning, Padme gave up with the usual fight for sleep and got up from her bed, pulling on a purple nightgown. It was enough to keep her warm, though the fire down in the common room sounded nice. Really nice. She managed to find her way to the door, but fumbled with the latch in the darkness. It never seemed so complex in daytime, yet her fingers hadn't memorized the correct way to do it. After a few moments of struggle, she managed and the door swung open on oiled hinges.
The common room was empty, as expected, and Padme sank down into the green armchairs. The silence beat down on her, but it was a peaceful one. She snuggled deeper into the armchair, similar to a cat, and watched the flames lick the wood, cackling their delight. She listened to the silence for what seemed a very short time before she heard footsteps approaching from the stairs, breaking the serenity. Sitting up, she peered into the darkness, not knowing who to expect.
