Rolling in her covers, Kiani wished she didn’t have to get up that morning. The duvet was thick and her kitten was resting by her head, the little face screwed up in a dream. The kitten’s whiskers scratched Kiani’s face as she moved slightly, and the kitten woke and mewed loudly, annoyed at being woken from her ‘chasing mice’ fantasy. Smiling teasingly, Kiani gave Kia’s stomach a good rub before rising from her bed, letting the tiny fluff-ball lie in. While Kia continued chasing flying birds and quick mice, Kiani had a quick, hot shower, then dressed herself in a simple black dress, ending a good three inches above her knee. Once she had applied a layer of mascara and eye-liner, she set a white necklace around her neck, then left for the Slytherin Common Room.
The room was welcoming, and Kiani headed for her usual place by the fire, on a comfortable beige chair big enough for her to sit cross-legged. Tucking her black-swatched legs beneath her, Kiani took out a grey leather book from her bag, and sat down in the chair to read. The fire blazed next to her, and after a few minutes Kia trotted down the stairs to join her, sitting in her lap and curling up.

Victoria strolled into the common room with her robes blowing behind her. She was frozen as she had spent most of her last lesson in the freezing cold snow. "That's the last time I do that!" she moaned and grumpily sat down next to a girl who was pleasantly reading.
Victoria gazed at the fire for a while until she noticed that the girl she was sitting close to looked strangely familiar. "Hey, you're the girl sitting next to me in History of Magic, weren't you?" Victoria asked loudly, not caring if the girl felt uncomfortable. Victoria continued to stare at this girl. She looked very pretty and very confident. Something Victoria liked, she hated people who were quiet and shy, there were just pathetic and boring.

Looking up from her veiled book, Kiani almost jumped to see someone sitting next to her. Kia grumbled, reajusted her position, hissed a little at the girl then curled up again. Seeing that the girl had disrupted her kitten, Kiani almost hissed too, though she just narrowed her eyes.
"Yeah, that's me. Your the one with the mirror- Victoria. I'm Kiani if you remember, and this is Kia. Usually, if people don't annoy her, she's friendly." It wasn't a threat, more of a possesive statment about her beloved cat. Flicking some hair from her eyes, Kiani half-closed the book, keeping her finger on the page, and lay an arm protectivley over Kia. Then she surveyed Victoria. The girl looked a little too head-strong, though her eyes showed determination which Kiani appreciated. Making her expression soften a little, Kiani approved of the girl silently in her mind.

Victoria glanced down at Kiani's pet cat who was hissing loudly. "Oh I don't mind, I have a cat as well. Got no idea where she is at the momen...oh yeah, she's at the Hospital wing." Victoria giggled as she remembered the episode. "She wasn't feeling to well and Madam Promfrey told me that she would have a look at her," she finished and stroked Kiana's cat.
Victoria looked down and picked up an abandoned book which had been left. It was surprisingly heavy and with no guilt she began to read it. She looked above her book slightly and saw Kiani reading as well. "What are you reading?" she asked, trying hard to make it sound polite.

Kia responded as usual to the obvious sign of attention, then, seeing Kiani's look, crept back to retreat against Kiani's hip, curling up but keeping one watchful eye open. Kiani looked at the girl, seeing that she wasn't the slightest bit put off with Kiani's approach. Trying not to smile, Kiani looked at her book, ready to respond. She had never met anyone who hadn't flinched in the least at Kiani's greeting's, and she liked it.
Slipping the grey cover down on her book, Kiani showed Victoria the title, which she had perposly hidden. Hexes and Spells for the Willing and Cunning Beneath the title, it read in tiny letters- and those who have no mercy Below the letters rested a giant sketch of a silver serpent. The book was ancient and valuable, but Kiani could tell Victoria would like it and would not tell.

Victoria giggled as she read the title of Kiani's book, she looked innocently at her hoping she wasn't taking it as she was mocking her. "I'm sorry but it's kind of a funny title," she said before she burst into a fit of giggles again.
Victoria tucked her skirt and legs underneath her and sat comfortable and finally began to control her giggles. She shifted her jumper so it was covering her whole chest as she was getting colder and colder as winter drew by.
"So, what's it like? I mean, what's the book like?" she said, keeping the subject on something both of them could talk about. Victoria had a problem with talking mostly about herself and she was also told that unless they do something to you, do nothing to them. This was only meant for Slytherins, of course.

Smiling at Victoria's obvious amusement, Kiani looked down at the book. "Yes, the title is a bit...drastic i suppose. It's a great book though- it has history in it, loads of 'useful' spells....you know, the ones a teacher wouldn't want in the school. Some great secrets too, like things people thought were lies etc. My father bought it for me ages ago, when i was younger. Until a few years ago i've never been able to read it- for some reason it wouldn't let me. It's complicated."
Kiani stopped talking abruptly. The book had done it again- closed on it's own, even though Kiani was keeping her finger in place. Opening it again, Kiani found that all the words in the book had disappeared, leaving blank parchment. She looked up at Victoria.

Victoria looked down at Kiani's book and noticed that she had not had her finger in the place she had closed it. Pretty silly, she thought as she quickly remembered many minutes she had spent trying to find the right page again.
Kiani opened the book again and Victoria scowled at it, it was completely empty. No words, no letters, nothing. Victoria sat up and looked down over it and picked her wand up. She slowly placed it on the book. "Recover," she whispered over it but nothing happened. Victoria snatched the book off Kiani and flicked through the pages. "Is it supposed to do this?" she asked, still examining the book.

Kiani reluctantly let Victoria look at the book, though half-snatched it back after a little moment. Trying not to seem rude, she set the book into her bag, keeping it hidden beside her black scarf tucked away next to it. Looking up, she answered the girl with a smile. "It doesn't like me talking about it i think- not sure how it knows, but it is ancient and...odd. Better change the subject...one of the old ones yes? Your favourite subject? That's quite simple i think."
Stopping herself, Kiani noticed with a blush she was babbling again. Grinning foolishly, she tucked her feet further into the chair, then flicking some loose hair from her eyes. The book seemed to pull her eyes to it, so she shut the flap on her bag so she couldn't see it.

Victoria's grin melted at the poor attempt of making sure Victoria didn't mention the book. Her neutral face turned into a grin also when Kiani made the feeble attempt to change the subject.
"Kiani, listen to me. I don't like to be left out and I definitely do not like to be considered thick. So, like a nice little third year you are going to explain that book to me and whatever is in your bag which is more interesting than me!"
Victoria whispered the words dangerously but no one in the room could hear and so nothing was suspicious she lent back into the couch and smiled like a dear friend. "I don't mean to be forceful but I have a short temper, most people know that. Maybe I should have mentioned it," she said, lighting the mood a slight.

Kiani stayed perfectly still, though one long, shaped eyebrow she raised at Victoria's little speech. With a small smile, she responded while stroking her kitten's silky fur rythmatically.
"Victoria, dearest. Yes, cleary you have a short temper, but i not going to give in to you like some stupid little Hufflepuff. The book is mine, as is the rest of what is in my bag, and you shall have no access to that information. Of course, if you had asked me kindly i have no doubt that i would have answered you as you wish it. However," Kiani leaned forward in her chair, eyes sparkling. "since you have not refrained from using your age to threaten me, i shall not do what you ask." She sat back again, and Kia rose, still purring, to sit on her owner's crossed legs comfortably. Once done, both looked at Victoria. "Age, darling, does not make a difference in this age." Kiani smiled sweetly.

Victoria left her eyes squarely on Kiani, Vicotria did have a short temper but answer her back was also, not something that made her smile. Kiani got up and walked away, Vicotria's mind went into a mix of a thousands curses and hexs. She smiled as she saw the book in Kiani's hands. She wasn't the type to steal it or her bag but she was the type to make sure Kiani did not have the best time at Hogwarts.
"No, you're not the a little Hufflepuff but you are a little Slytherin, either way, I do not like people who annoy me. Now, keep your mouth shut!" she shouted and the caming herself down.
She patted her skirt and flicked her hair out of her eyes. She stepped closer towards her, making each step as patronisingas the one before. She looked deadly into Kiani's eyes. Making sure, she didn't blink or didn't give any sign of what she was thinking. She suddenly grabbed Kiani's chin like she was a child and whispered, "Smile!"
She pulled her chin forcefully and then let go, looking down at Kiani and grinning.

Golden-brown eyes narrowed, Kiani slapped Victoria's hand away. Kia watched her mistress, then hissed at Victoria with clear dislike. Kiani soothed her kitten quickly, then extended one long slim leg, pushing Victoria back into her own chair and away from Kiani and Kia. Once done, she patted Kia's head, keeping her thing eyes on Victoria. "Calm down Kia. You don't want to get fleas now, would you? So stay away from that mongrel there." Then she raised her book, bringing it level with her eyes and began to read. The words were somehow now back, and although Kiani kept her eyes on the page, Kia's similar ones stayed on Victoria.
Before Kiani could turn to the next page, there came a crash from nearby. A cat had jumped onto a nearby table, knocking off a tall glass lamp. Angry at the interuption Kiani whipped out her wand, whispered softly "Reparo!", then carried on reading as the lamp fixed itself. All the while, Kia kept her eyes trained on Victoria.
