Sadie wondered back to the common room, head down, staring at her feet. She had never been in a place so huge and with so many people, and felt so lonely at the same time. Her heart felt as if it had been ripped out by one of those magical creatures that she had been reading about the other night.
Today was a beautiful day, the kind that made you want to go outside. The sun was as bright as an angel's smile and the wind gently. It smelled as sweet as baby's breath. Sadie would have loved to been out in the warmth of the sun, but she was too deeply sadden to go outside. She had always been great at making friends, but she was so shy around the other students here at Hogwart's.
This is what had her so depressed, she couldn't figure out why she was so shy around all the kids here. She wished that she could meet some new people and make a few new friends, but she didn't know where to start. She just hoped that if she sat in the common room enough, some one would finally notice that she was there, for though it may not have been that way, she thought of her self invisable to everyone else.

The Hufflepuff/Slytherin quidditch match was drawing nearer by the day, and she couldn’t say that it was easing her nerves at all. Luckily, the team seemed to play well in their practice today, their last one before the game. She changed out of her robes in the locker rooms before heading back towards the common room to hopefully relax and get her mind off of the game. For the first time in months, she wanted to think about anything but quidditch.
After making her way back to the familiar common room, she instinctively looked around for Ivy, who still wasn’t around. They hadn’t left the pitch at the same time, as she had to stay late to take care of the equipment, while Ivy was free to go once practice was over. She sighed, wondering why she hadn’t managed to make many friends beyond her Quidditch mate. As she glanced around the room again, she noticed a girl she remembered from sorting that year. She didn’t know the girl’s name, only that she was a first year, and she noticed now that she was alone. She bit her lip, then told herself that she could do this. She was always too shy to approach anyone, but she told herself that was going to change, and why not start with this girl.
She walked over to where the first year was standing, and smiled her friendliest smile. “Hi…um…I’m Nokomis.”

Sadie was so pleased that someone had finally talked to her. She remembered seeing Nokomis the night that she had been sorted. She smiled sweetly and said "Hi, my name's Sadie. How are you?" She hoped that the girl wanted to be friends because she felt so alone in this great big place and it would be nice to finally have a friend.

The girls sweet smile helped ease her mind, and besides shifting her weight from one foot to the other, she kept most of her shy behavior at bay. The first year seemed really nice, and somehow, younger Hufflepuffs seemed more aprochable. Besides, Sadie seemed as alone as she was.
"I'm pretty good, thanks for asking." She paused for a moment, smiling again as she shifted her weight again, glancing around the common room, as she tried to think of what else she could say.
"Um...how are you? Are you enjoying being at Hogwarts?"
She knew how scary it was when she was new. Everything seemed so big, and she didn't have any friends. She didn't really have any at the end of her first year either, and it made her feel good thinkign she could change that in another first year.

Sadie was glad to hear such a sweet tone in the girl's voice, and to see such a friendly smile. She thought for a minute and then replied,"I'm doing good, and yes, so far I'm enjoying being here." "I just haven't made many friends and I've been a little worried that I won't do very well in my classes." Sadie hoped that she had not talked so much that it would scare the other girl away. Nokomis was one of the two girls in the house that had talked to her. This slightly worried her. She had always been different than her muggle friends, but thought herself somewhat the same as most of the people here at the school. Although she had over heard some Slytherins making jokes about muggle-borns, and this made her worry about who she could tell that she was a muggle-born. She didn't want to be made fun of, so she just didn't say anything to Nokomis. Maybe if things seemed to turn into a friendship, then she could tell her, but she would wait and see.

Sadie didn't know what else to say, she did tend to be a bit shy. She just sat there with her most friendliest smile, hoping that Nokomis would like to chat with her. She was still a little nervous, since this was her first year and she didn't know very many people.

She smiled again, trying to stop herself from shifting her weight. There was nothing to be worried about Sadie seemed really nice, like a person she might be friends with some day. It would be nice to have someone else to turn to when classes got rough or quidditch was stressful. She wanted to say something back to the girl, but for a moment her mind was blank. She never was any good at conversation. She started to bit her bottom lip, searching for anything that she might say. She glanced around the common room, trying to find inspiration, what she saw though, was a pair of older students leaving their chairs near the fire.
“How about we sit down and you can tell me what class is your favorite?”<br> School and classes were always good things to talk about. There was always quidditch, but that was hard for some people, and she couldn’t remember if Sadie was a muggle-born or not. Sometimes muggle-borns didn’t understand the game at first. She knew she didn’t, and her dad was a wizard.
((Sadie, I'm really sorry if sometimes I don't reply right away, sometimes life gets really busy. I won't forget our post though, I promise!))

Sadie replied, " So far I like Charms, but it's hard to learn all of this stuff for the first time." She Continued, "I never even knew that magic and all of the creatures that are associated with it even existed until I got my letter in the middle of my birthday party." She decided to ask about quidditch. "What's quidditch like, is it any fun?" She asked. She knew that she had never been on a broom, but she was signed up for flying lessons and hoped that she was good at it. She expected flying to be the one thing that made her the most nervous, but she actually was kind of excited to try it.
She didn't know what else to talk about yet, since she had not been to very many classes, yet. .Everything made her nervous at the moment. Maybe finding a friend would help her loosen up.
((Nokomis, that's ok I know the feeling about life getting busy at times, mine stays that way.))

She wmiled when Sadie said that she liked charms. That class was probably her favorite one, she was always amazed at how much could be done with charms. It was such an important type of magic.
"I didn't know magic existed either. I mean...my father is a wizard, but he and my mum seperated when I was born, so I was raised as a muggle." She stopped herself, biting her lip wondering if she had just talked too much. She was always worried she was talking too much. Sadie then asked about quidditch, and she knew she would really have to be careful not to talk too much. She coudl always talk forever about quidditch.
"Quidditch is great. I never knew about it before...and now I can't imagine not playing it."

Sadie didn't think that Nokomis had talked too much, in fact it was kind of nice to have someone to talk to at all. Sadie's only friend until now had been Ivy, and Ivy was really busy at times, so they didn't have a lot of time to talk. " Was your mom excited when you got the letter?'" She asked.
Sadie remembered how excited that her parents were, even in the confusion of it all. She missed them a lot, but she could always write to them.
" My parents are original from the States, they moved to London because of all the fighting that was always going on over there."
She wanted to ask Nokomis about her family, but since Nokomis had told her that her folks were seperated, that it might be a touchy subject.
" I really wish that I could fly well enough to try quidditch, but I'm not that good at it."

When Sadie asked her about her mum's reaction to the letter she hesitated. It had not exactly been a happy moment in ther life. She didn't even know that she was magical, her mom had hoped that it wasn't something that would be passed on, and so she was rased muggle, thinking magic never really existed. Her mum never even did things like Santa or to Tooth Fairy. Instead she just said they were made up and there was no reason to believe in things that never existed.
"Well, um...my mum was actually a bit unhappy at it. She didn't want me to go. She got over it though. I think my dad told her that it was just...who I was, and she couldn't change it."
She was silen tfor a moment, worrying again that maybe she had said to much. "I got to meet my dad after that though. He is the one who gave my first broom."

Sadie felt bad that she had brought up such a bad memory for Nokomis. "Sorry," she said," I didn't mean to bring up such a bad memory." " Both of my parents are american, and they didn't know that magic existed either, they were kind of worried about it when I got my letter, but they still let me come." Sadie remembered that her mom was a little more excited than her dad because her mom's family was from Ireland and that they would be so proud. That was why her mom had bought her an owl, so that she could keep in touch with everyone at home. But she only wrote to her mom and dad, because she knew that her friends wouldn't understand.
" Do you have a pet?" she asked. Maybe her and Nokomis could talk about pets and things like that, to get off of such a bad topic.

She smiled softly when Sadi said she was sorry for brining up a bad memory. It wasn't really a bad memory. She never really knew her father before, so she didn't know what she was missing. She had liked her childhood, and he mum, and she had gotten to know her father a bit.
"Its okay. I love my Mum, and its nice to know my dad some now. He told me to try out for Quidditch when he gave me my broom...and now I'm captin of the team."
She smiled at Sadie again, who was now changing the subject to pets. That was a topic she could always talk about.
"I have a cat actually. Her name is Pandora."

" I have a snowy owl," Sadie replied. " She was a birthday present from my mom. I got my letter in the middle of my party, so it kind of freaked all of my friends out." Sadie had been told that for a snowy owl, it was a very unusual variation of colors. " My owl is an off white, with golden brown ring shaped markings. Her name is Colena." "What color is Pandora?" Sadie asked.
She knew that she could talk all day about Colena the owl. The bird was her most prized pocession, and she didn't know what she would do if any thing ever happened to it. Nokomis seemed a little happy for the change in the subject at hand, and Sadie didn't want to make her sad by continueing to talk about parents. She smiled at Nokomis. Sadie thought that Nokomis would make a great friend, but she wanted to get to know her a little better first, even though that was the way a beginning of a friendship started.

She loved her cat. Pandora had been a birthday present from her mum when she turned 10. There had always been animals around the house, a cat or two and a dog, and there was a stable with horses just down the street, but when she turned 10, she got a pet of her own. Not for the family, nor for her mum, it was all hers.
"Pandora is grey and white. She is two-and-a-half this year. I named her Pandora because of the legend...I can't remember if it was Greek or Roman or something, When Pandora was a kitten my mum said she was Pandora reborn, and I asked her what she meant, so she told me the legend and I thought it was a good name for her. She is pretty lazy now though."
She smiled, wondering if Sadie felt the same way about her owl as she did about her cat. She had never had an owl before, but she had to admit that they were useful. She used the owls to send messages back home to her mum. She did like how Pandora would curl up in bed with her at night though. It reminded her of when she was at home.
"Colena sounds really pretty."

" Thanks," Sadie replied," Pandora sounds really pretty, too." Sadie understood how Nokomis felt about her cat, she felt the same way about Colena. " Colena was a gift from my mum, too. I got her this year on my birthday." Saide continued, " My letter came in the middle of my birthday party, and it scared everyone away, so when we went to get the things I needed, mum got me my owl. She was bought to make me feel better about my birthday."
Sadie thought back to that night. The party had been going great until a huge brown owl with what looked like horns on it's head had come through the open window, smashing right into Sadie's birthday cake. No one around had ever seen an owl delivering the post before, so it spooked everyone, and then her dad had to read the letter out loud, and that was what scared everyone away.
" I really treasure my owl, especially now." Sadie told Nokomis. " I just got a letter from my dad, and my mum is really bad sick. The Muggle doctors don't know what it is to try and treat it."

She nodded when Sadie comment on Pandora and how she must be pretty. Pandora had been a really cute kitten, with her tiny little body and thick long hair it made her look like more of a puff-ball than anything, but she had grown up rather pretty.
"That must have been so hard. The own coming during your party. Mine came when it was just me and my Mum, but I can't believe having muggles around. Having to hide magic from then can be so hard. Especially once you really get use to it at school. I keep wanting to pull out my want when I am at home."
She couldn't believe how much she was talking, especially considering that she didn't know Sadie very well, but she seemed so nice and they were getting along really well.
"I'm really sorry about your Mum." She didn't really know what else to say when Sadie said her mother was sick, but at least it was a start.

" It was really embarrassing having that big, huge, brown owl fly into the cake." Sadie told Nokomis. " And it just stood there while I read my letter." Sadie kind of got sad thinking about all of the events that had happened that night. "My dad hasn't written back to tell me if my mum is any better, or if the doctors have even found out what was wrong with her." Sadie told her. She really wished that she knew what to do about her mum, but there really wasn't anything she could do.
" So anyway, Is there any thing that you wanted to know about me, I seem to keep asking all the questions and don't want to be too nosy" She said to Nokomis. Sadie was surprised that any one had even talked to her, and that she was being so talkative at the same time.

She wasn't sure what to say exactly to Sadie about her mum being sick. It was a hard thing to talk about really, especially when she didn't know her very well. She wanted to comfort the first year though, she still remember how had it was to be a first year and be away form her mum for so long.
"I'm sure everything will be okay. And you can always talk to me about it...if you want that is."
She smiled slightly, and decided to let the topic drop. Talking about other parts of life would be much more pleasant. No one wanted their first conversation with a possible new friend to be about a family member being ill. "Um...I don't know...I'm bad at asking questions. And I don't mind you being nosey...not that you are or anything. I don't really even know what to ask."

Sadie was running out of questions too that was why she had offered to let Nokomis ask her about herself for awhile. " I've ran out of questions, myself. That and I dont' want to talk too much." Sadie told Nokomis. She really didn't have much else to say. The two girls had talked about family, and quidditch, and school, and pets. The only thing really left to talk about was boys and Sadie didn't really want to talk about that subject, since she really didn't know any of the boys around the school.
