The ball had been planned for some time and Albus had no intention of canceling it even after the events that had occurred on New Year’s. He figured the students could use a distraction from the melancholy that seemed to have planted itself in the roots of Hogwarts. The Valentines Day ball was a perfect distraction, in more ways than one. As Albus walked around the Great Hall, he looked the mist up and down. The mist symbolized one important thing. Anyone who was inside it would immediately be forced to sing their own feelings and thoughts. Of course, forcing every student to sing was down right cruel, so instead he had made sure the mist was only placed in some areas of the school. Anyone who didn’t want to sing or dance as if they were in a musical simply had to stay away from the mist. With an amused smile, Albus checked the food at the refreshments tables. Nothing but the finest was set out tonight. It was going to be a magical night indeed. Students would soon pour in and he would deliver his speech… in song and then he would disappear to enjoy his night as well. Valentines Day was certainly a magical holiday, even if it wasn’t considered an actual holiday.
Just as he thought about how the students would react to the theme of the ball, there was loud chatter behind him. Albus turned around, his maroon robes swishing softly against the stone flooring. A stream of students was already entering, all talking loudly. The chatter ceased as their eyes landed upon the mist. Since they weren’t sure what the mist was, they decided to stay clear of it, and that brought another amused smile to his face. With a quick wink toward the group, Albus continued his rounds until he was on the platform where the band was to be set up for those who would rather not make their own music. More and more students started to enter, and soon there was a large crowd. He waited for a few more moments, and then clapped his hands. The sound reverberated throughout the Great Hall and within moments the noise had died down. Taking a vial from the inside of his robes, Dumbledore uncapped it and threw the contents up in the air. This mist was different than all the other mists. This mist let everyone else hear him sing and not just those nearest to him. “Out of a snow cloud, cold and grey,” his voice was clear and was really full. The mist made it so he was a good singer, Albus wasn’t sure the students would stay to hear him sing if he used his actual voice. “Something dropped on St. Valentine’s Day, whirling and twirling and soft and light. Like wee little letters all dainty and white. And I guess the sky children were sending down; this Valentine straight to the children in town.” Albus finished and looked at the crowd over his half moon spectacles.
“Welcome!” He raised his hands with a broad smile, the mist was already gone, he only needed it for a few moments. “This Valentines Day ball won’t be like any other ball you’ve been to! The mist that surrounds the half of the Great Hall and some empty classrooms around the entrance hall, are mists that make you sing and dance as if you are in a musical. I suggest, that if you don’t feel like sharing your secrets with your friends or your date that you stay away from the mist.” Albus grinned mischievously and let his hands drop. “Hopefully, your songs will be much better than mine and possibly more original. Don’t worry, though, not everyone can hear your song. Only those who are nearest to you. If you are singing, there will be stars in the mist to let people know who all is singing in the song. Be warned, though, anyone can enter a mist and sing with you.” He gave everyone a stern look and then laughed, “Have fun!”
