Kennedy paced briskly down the Hogwarts corridor. He was searching for an empty room that he might be able to practice a spell or two in. Realizing his performance in class was struggling a bit, he decided a little extra practice for his spell casting techniques wouldn't hurt. Plus, he knew that it would be beneficial in case he wanted to duel anytime soon. His last encounter with Draco Malfoy would have been quite embarrassing had he actually accepted Kennedy's challenge to duel. Finding a small, empty room, Kennedy shut the door behind him and observed the contents of the place. Looking around, he noticed half a dozen desks lined up against the back wall. There was a chalkboard on the opposite wall with a few incantations written on it. Kennedy assumed the room must be a place for smaller groups of students to meet for instruction, given the tiny parameters and surroundings. For now, it would do.
He pulled out his wand, and thought of what to start with. Noticing an empty bottle under one of the desks, he set it upright on the desk surface and decided to start with a basic knock-back jinx. "Flippendo!" he shouted as he gave his wand a flick. The bottle moved slightly, but remained standing. Determined to knock it down, he gave it another go. "Flippendo!" he yelled again. This time, the bottle was shot backward off the desk and it fell to the floor. With a loud crash, the bottle broke and small fragments of glass scattered throughout the room. That wasn't too bright, he thought to himself.
Without an object to focus his spell on, he decided next to try a spell that conjured a specific thing. Remembering a spell that could create a swarm of vermin, Kennedy jogged his memory in attempt to remember the incantation that was needed. Just then, he heard the door creak open, and he turned quickly to see who had entered the room. Realizing that the glass shards were still spread on the floor, he hoped that it wasn't a professor or any authority figure for that matter. Luckily, it was a student, but one he didn't know. "What do you want?" he asked, disappointed that his practice session was being interrupted.

Sephora sat near the warm fire in the Gryffindor Common room, twisting a strand of her chocolate hair absent-mindedly. She suddenly felt like taking a stroll around the castle. Getting up from her seat, she made her way through the Portrait Hole and wandered down one of the corridors. Sephora was bored beyond belief and vaguely decided to head up to the owlery to visit her owl Midnight. She was a beautiful owl with shiney, soft black fur and glowing amber eyes. Maybe I should send Uncle Areson a letter while I'm up there. Too bad I've got no parchment on me.
Sephora climbed a flight of stairs, tracing her hand along the railing as she went. She stared out at the overcast sky through the frosted windows as she passed a couple of vacant classrooms.
crash
Sephora doubled back. What was that? Down the colonnade which she just came from, she heard the sound of glass breaking. Maybe the classrooms weren't empty after all. She hurried back through the corridor and stopped as she heard movement inside the closed classroom in front of her. Cautiously, she turned the door knob and stepped in. The door made a loud crack and someone inside peered around a desk. The two of them locked eyes. It was a guy who looked a little older than Sephora with Slytherin robes and a wand held in his hand. She had never seen him around school until now.
"What do you want?" he asked a bit jerkily.
Sephora noticed shards of glass glistening on the floor as she walked into the classroom further. She swiftly took out her wand and with one wave got rid of the mess.
"I heard a crash. I was just seeing if someone got hurt. No need for the attitude" Sephora said as she held up her hands in peace. She put her wand back into her robe pocket. "What are you doing anyway?" she asked smiling, but smirking a little also.

Kennedy watched as the girl used her wand to clean the glass from the floor. She explained that she had heard the crash and decided to check out the room. Ignoring the girl's question, Kennedy went back to attempting to remember the vermin spell. A sudden burst of insight provided him with the correct spell, and he quickly pointed to the empty corner and shouted, "Vermillious!" A few mice, four or five, ran around the room and past the girl. After finding a small hole in the wall, the mice and their squeaking noises disappeared. Kennedy let out a small chuckle. It wasn't how he had remembered the spell being demonstrated. When he saw it done, a lot more mice were summoned, but he was pleased nonetheless. Five mice were better than none.
By this time, Kennedy had almost completely forgot about the girl, as he was so involved in his practice. Then he noticed her and was once again reminded of her presence and also of the displeasure that she brought. It wasn't that she was annoying or anything, but Kennedy just wasn't wanting an audience at the time. Unless she could prove useful, he'd rather she wouldn't have came.
"So what are you standing there for then," he inquired, wanting to see if she was only there for viewing purposes. "You need to watch me for some sort of entertainment or something?" he asked sarcastically.

Sephora stood in silence as she watched the guy attempt a spell. A few mice skitted across the tiles in front of her and she leapt back. She wasn't too fond of mice. Neither was she with rats. With the thought of going to the Owlery now in the back of her mind, she watched yet again as the Slytherin casted the same spell. Wait a minute. Didn't Uncle Areson used to do that same spell to feed his snake, Scales?
"So what are you standing there for then?" the guy inquired. "You need to watch me for some sort of entertainment or something?" he asked sarcastically. He had caught Sephora off guard. She was lost in her own memories and she wasn't really ready for such a question to be thrown at her. "Actually, this is quite entertaining compared to going to the Owlery or doing an essay for Snape" she answered taking a seat in the desk behind him. "I think I can be of an assistance." She paused, hesitating. She wasn't positive that this guy would want or appreciate her help. He'd probably just get disgusted. A Gryffindor being nice to a Slytherin was very rare, and vice versa. Both houses considered the other to be scum, filth, vermin, etc. But Sephora didn't really have a problem with Slytherins. It was the Slytherins that had such a problem being decent to her. Granted, some of them were really quite nice, but most were just haters. "My uncle used to own a pet snake and he used that same spell to feed it mice. He did it a bit differently than you are. Instead of waving it to the right, then left, then left again, you- here let me just show you." Sephora walked over to the guy and grabbed his wrist, directing him with the right way to wave his wand. "There, that's how you do it. You just forgot that small flick at the end I think." Sephora let go of his arm and sat back into the same desk she was sitting in moments before.

Listening as the girl admitted to enjoying the entertainment, Kennedy watched as she took a seat in one of the empty desks. She really is going to sit here and watch, Kennedy thought, a bit surprised. Rolling his eyes, he turned once again and prepared to cast the spell, paying no attention to the girl. He figured she could do as she pleased as long as she didn't bother him. He really wasn't in the mood for causing a fight, as he knew that that' would be the result if he bothered to proceed in the conversation.
Just as he was about to summon some more mice, he felt the girl grab his arm and move it in a sweeping motion back and forth. He heard her muttering something about the proper technique, but he was not really listening to what she had to say. He was more taken back by the idea that she felt inclined to jump in on his practice more than anything. Giving her a blank look of disgust he managed to mutter the words, "What the bloody hell..." before forcing himself to forget it and go on with the spell.
Without realizing it, Kennedy instinctively traced the same pattern of movement that the girl had demonstrated as he once again muttered, "Vermillious." This time, a swarm of mice erupted from his wand and the spell worked quite successfully. A bit surprised, Kennedy watched as the mice sped around the room, all looking for an escape hole. All but one who stopped to nibble on a small crumb of food that was lying on the floor were gone in a matter of seconds.
Looking back at the girl who had taken a seat again, Kennedy let out a small sigh. "Thanks," he retorted, "but I could have done it quite well myself." Kennedy assumed that her advice probably was the key to his success, but he neglected to share that with her. Pride was something that as a Slytherin, Kennedy was surrounded by and almost forced into. Although sometimes he felt it would just be easier to chose his friends and allies on other criteria besides house and blood. Sometimes even Slytherins and purebloods were just unbearable to be around. But for now, Kennedy stuck to his upbringing, as he showed little kindness to the helpful girl.

Sephora watched from her seat at an old rusty desk as the guy took her advice and casted the Vermillious spell again. This time he performed the right movements and a group of mice burst from the tip of his wand. Sephora felt satisfied as she glanced at the mice scrambling into a small cranny in the wall. Her eyes returned to the guy and she saw him sigh. Sephora expected him to thank her for her helpful tip, but instead she received an ignorant retort.
"Thanks" he said, "but I could have done it quite well myself."
Go figure. What was I even expecting from this Slytherin? A cheerful smile of thanks? Like that would happen. Sephora felt irked and a little pissed off.
"Oh, stop being so pigheaded. You know I'm the one who made that cast work properly. Why do all Slytherins have to be so intolerant? You pure bloods always act like you can do anything." Sephora said rolling her eyes and crossing her arms against her chest. Sephora couldn't stand the constant battling of the Houses. All of her life she had been raised to treat everyone equal, even if they were her enemies. Her father always used to quote: "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer." She didn't always follow this saying, but it was sort of hard to when her enemies kept such a far distance away. Even Quidditch was terribly affected. The Gryffindor and Slytherin Quidditch teams always fought tooth and nail for a win, and the team who lost usually got treated horribly and were badly made fun of for a few days after.
Sephora immediately wanted to take the words she said back. Inside her thoughts, she was scolding herself. Just for once, couldn't she keep her mouth shut?

"Pigheaded?" Kennedy questioned angrily. He hadn't even shot a terribly rude comment, and already the girl was calling him pigheaded. At least her desire to share unkind words with him fueled Kennedy's fire and made it easier to continue acting rudely without feeling any bit of remorse. "Excuse me Miss... Big-headed," Kennedy said, stressing the 'Big,' "you're the one who pranced in here like a nosy little showoff and began instructing me," he finished, emphasizing sarcasm on the word 'instructing.' By this time, all of his previous thoughts of guilt were diminished, and he no longer felt bad for his initial rudeness. "If it weren't against school policy, I would demonstrate some good spells for you," he snapped. "Or should I say on you?" he added with a smirk. If this girl wanted to get lippy with him, Kennedy had no problem dishing it back, especially since words were usually empty threats. He could go all day in a verbal spar once he got going. Tapping his wand against his temple, Kennedy narrowed his eyes. "Just let me know if you are up for the offer," he said coolly, watching to see the girl's response. "I wouldn't want to be Pigheaded and do anything while you weren't expecting it." ((Sorry it's short... getting back into the swing of things after a while of not writing... it should get better as we go- hopefully ))

Why do I always speak my thoughts out loud? Oh man Oh man Oh man, I think I made him angry.... Kennedy's face twisted into a look of pure fury. He went off, calling Sephora a show off, nosy, and big headed. She probably deserved it a tad because she was the one who started calling him intolerant, but still....A show off? How was she a show off? The guy continued to ramble on about how he could use some forbidden spells on Sephora and if she was up for the offer. Was he challenging her to a duel? Sephora immediately went into defense mode. Anger built up inside of her and she exploded.
"First off, I'm not nosy. I already told you why I came in here. And secondly, I was just trying to help you. I didn't think you'd take a nice gesture and twist it into calling me a show off. I wasn't trying to impress anyone. I wouldn't be calling me big headed either if I were you. You're the one who thought you could pull off that spell without my assistance." Sephora snapped. She tried to calm herself by taking a deep breathe. Sephora didn't want to result to using her wand, but she felt so offended. She dished her hand forcefully into her robes and whipped out her wand. At this point, she didn't really care if they got caught in a fight. Serving detention seemed like a small price for being able to hex this guy. "I'm up for it" Sephora said slyly, lifting her head up high. She wasn't going to let this Slytherin scare her.

Listening to the girl's response, Kennedy maintained his posture, assuring that she wouldn't identify his empty threat. She wasn't backing down as he had hoped, and he began thinking of what he should do. As she readied her wand and informed him that she was up for a challenge, Kennedy bit his lip in frustration. His tactics had failed, as the girl was more than ready to fight Kennedy if he would have actually be intending on doing so.
Without hesitation, he shot back, "Well lucky for you, I don't want to waste my time with you. Otherwise, you would see just how wrong you are to think that you could hold your own against me." Angry that he was coming off as someone who was all talk and no action, or as the muggles would say 'all bark and no bite,' Kennedy gritted his teeth and sighed heavily.
Knowing that he had dug himself a hole that he could only get out of by breaking a rule, Kennedy just let it all out. "You know what," he said, his voice still full of confidence, "maybe I am glad that you taught me the silly little way to do the spell. Maybe you are lucky that I actually am afraid to break the rules and get caught casting a spell at you. But you know what else, I really don't care. Think what you want to think, but you are just fortunate that I'm one of few Slytherins who wouldn't hesitate to let you have it and hex you from here to tomorrow. So if you will just leave me alone and get out of my way, it would be greatly appreciated," he snapped, full of frustration and anger. "Unless of course you want to cast the first spell, as then I would have a justified reason to be cursing you back," he added with a sneer.
Kennedy knew that his words probably came as a shock to Sephora, but he was hardly in the mood to care. She could think of him what she wanted to think of him, but he was sick of feeling like he had to act all bad and tough just because he was a part of Slytherin. He only had to please himself and nobody else, and that was all that mattered to him at the moment.
