“Once upon a time
A boy with moonlight in his eyes
Put his hand in mine and said he loved me so
But that was once upon a time
Very long ago
Once upon a hill
We sat beneath a willow tree
Counting all the stars
And waiting for the dawn
But that was once upon a time
Now that tree is gone
How the breeze ruffled through her hair
How we always laughed as though tomorrow wasn’t there
We were young and didn’t have a care
Where did it go?”
Wendi froze in the middle of the familiar song. She often sang out loud just for her pleasure, but this time was oh so different. This wasn’t just any song. This was perhaps Wendi’s favorite song. It was one her mother used to sing to her at night when she was a baby. Wendi would never have remembered that song if it wasn’t for Jamison. He often reminded her of it with his guitar. He wanted Wendi to remember her parents even though that was impossible. She was only a year old when her parents died tragically. Actually, they were murdered. Wendi couldn’t remember a thing about them except for one memory. It was only a few days before their deaths. Wendi was lying in her mother’s arms outside. It was late and the stars shown brightly. She looked up at one and laughed as her dad came outside with Jamison on his shoulders. That was it. Wendi could remember no more of them. Only this one little dream, but she treasured the one memory she did have.
It was night. The skies were clear and the stars were out. It was just like her memory except that she was alone. Wendi sat at the foot of the lake. Her feet were deep in the water as she sat on the grass. She wanted so bad to jump in, but she resisted the temptation feeling that it might to be the right time. The night depressed her which was an odd thing for Wendi. She was the happy, wild child not the depressed parentless kid. But, this night made her feel alone. She felt like she was the only human in the world. The wind blew around her making her side pony tail whisper in the breeze. Wendi looked around. It was about time to turn in. True, it wasn’t yet curfew and dinner had just ended, but Wendi didn’t want to risk loosing house points from Hufflepuff. She was so glad they were winning the house cup so far.
Wendi looked around her again. The night was just so peaceful and care free. She was sort of sad that it depressed her so. It should make her feel happy that she could remember her parents so lovingly, but it didn’t. It just made her want them to come back. She wanted them so bad, but nothing could bring them back from the dead. Well, there was no magic that Wendi knew of to do so. She stared at the sky and focused her attention on one star in particular. “Once upon a time, a girl with hope in her eyes, wished upon a star and her deepest wish came true.” She sang softly to herself a line she had just made up. That was enough. Wendi had decided to turn in, but heard footsteps behind her. She froze hoping they wouldn’t see her. Wendi didn’t think there was too much of a reason for her to be in trouble, but you never know.
