((14th February in Estonia is not celebrated as a day of lovers (though little hearts are given between them as well) but rather as a Friends Day. This post holds a lot of questions that I need to figure out for myself as Dana, so she won’t be overly happy in it I’m afraid.
Dana walked to the old wooden boat-dock in the Hogwarts lake. It was curious that it was even here as Dana had never seen any boats on the lake. Then again it might be nice to go rowing with someone you like at some warm May-evening. Well, it would be nice if you managed to avoid getting caught by Filch or one of the teachers for being out of common room after curfew. Dana smiled as she reached the edge of the dock her heeled boots sending curious echoes through the wood as she walked to the edge and seated herself down. Dana was feeling… pensive. She wasn’t even sure why, but then again at the same time she was. Dana pulled Kris’s black sweater even tighter around his body, the black sweater still looking baggy on her despite the 4 sweaters Dana wore under it. Hey, she wanted to be warm without wearing long heavy cloaks!
Dana swung her legs lazily back and forth over the water as she stared over the lake. The last time she had been here – though in a bit different location at the lake-shore – she had had a 40-something fever and her left palm had been bleeding. Though her idea of becoming a knife-thrower in a traveling circus wasn’t perhaps the best, in some ways Dana almost missed the freedom having feverish hallucinations gave you. Even if she didn’t want to get sick again. Dana sighed and lowering her head watching how the toes of her boots dabbed into the icy water. Hallucinations were nice and while Dana wanted to keep her dreams she would have to think seriously sometimes as well.
The footsteps were audible and Dana smiled to herself knowing who it was even without turning around. The boy came to her and stopped, crouching down his fingers smoothing Dana’s shoulders gently massaging out strain and worry. “I brought you something,” Kris murmured into Dana’s ear as his hands rose to her hair. Gazing at the mirror reflection of the in the water Dana laughed and tilted her head back a little letting Kris braid the small and innocently white blooms of snowdrops into her hair. The white flowers shone nicely against Dana’s own black hair as she smiled enjoying the silence and the company after Kris finished braiding. “You must have had a hard time finding snowdrops at this time of year,” Dana murmured not bothering to muse over the ease at which Kris had braided her hair.
“Well, it’s friends-day. And you are my best friend, little sis. A little bit psychotic sometimes, but still my best friend,” Kris murmured back just as gently, “I miss it you know. Being kids with you, but you have grown up more than you admit to yourself. And I don’t like seeing you so serious. Meredith and Julien will be waiting for me with their wands ready to curse when I move on one day”
Dana turned her head and smiled at Kris glancing briefly at the red bud of rose tucked behind his ear. “It doesn’t become you,” Dana answered with a smile and a nod towards the bloom even if Kris wouldn’t see it.
“Good, cause it’s not for me. Make peace with yourself, sweetheart,” Kris dropped the red flower into Dana’s lap as he moved his head and kissed Dana’s temple before standing and walking back to the shore where Cleo was waiting for her. The two girls shared a quick way Dana smiling slightly as she saw Kris’s and Cleo’s fingers intervening. The redheaded Ravenclaw was just what Kris needed to keep him happy Dana decided quietly feeling a smile rise onto her lips as Cleo laughed at something Kris said and her voice carried through the quiet air to Dana as well.
Played with fire, felt it’s burn
I would have thought that I would have learned
I melted every time you kissed me
Every time you’d leave I thought that you would miss me
Heartbreaker, wish that I had seen that love was blind
Sweet little love maker, takin’ my heart and leave me behind
Heartbreaker couldn’t you be
Just a little more kind to me.”
Dana grinned at the excerpt of lyrics that carried over to her – Cleo had just as good voice as Kris had which was really annoying as Dana couldn’t sing for the life of her – and turned to stare back over the Hogwarts lake lazily turning the rose in her hands.
It was true. Dana needed to think. She would turn into legal age in a couple of months. New duties would fall onto her shoulders from her grnad-parents with then. But what would happen in the wizarding world? The threat Voldemort posed was big and realistic. Death Eaters vs Aurors and the Ministry didn’t appear to be winning. Yet Dana didn’t know what she’d do. She didn’t feel much sympathy for Wonder-kid and she didn’t really look cheerfully at the prospect of fighting by his side. Yet would she – could she – stay neutral and not participate in the war that was bound to come one day? Especially now that Meredith and Julien had... passed on. So many questions and some many decisions yet to make, yet Dana didn’t have the answers and there were no grandparents who would smooth her hair back, argued and discussed matters with her and in the end stood by her side no matter what she decided. Dana sighed lowering the rose-bud and touching the water with it for a moment before raising the small bloom up again smiling almost sadly at the created image of a dew-drop on the rose. Too bad life couldn’t be fixed up to appear perfect.
