Colin felt extremely put out of place as he watched everyone else in his dorm begin to pack for the holidays. In fact, many people in Gryffindor were going home for the break, more then half! Colin would be left here all by himself, dealing with the cold that Hogwarts couldn't keep out nearly as well as home. The fact was though, Colin didn't really want to go home. He'd much rather stay at the castle, looking over his studies and all that. He needed some free time to catch up. I mean, it wasn't so bad opening presents all by yourself in a dorm... was it? At least he would have presents. Colin sat on his bed, occasionally passing a glance at his empty trunk, but never getting up to fill it with things he would take along. The dorm was almost barren with people taking everything home when Colin left. He couldn't stand to watch the activity going on.
Snow was gently starting to fall. Colin watched it from the library window, wondering if this was the type of snow that would stick or would just melt as soon as it hit the ground. It had been getting rather colder these days, so Colin thought it might just be that sticky snow that would be good for a snow man. He smiled at the thought; at least there would be some amusement at Hogwarts during break. He pulled his Gryffindor red cloak farther over his shoulders as someone opened the door to the library. It let in a blast of cold air that Colin heartily despised as the 'hall-way air.' He watched the person move around a bit before remembering why he had gone to the library in the first place. To have some peace and quiet. To read a little. He picked up his book from his bag and opened it to the page he had left off.
An hour or two passed until Colin grew bored and his eyes wondered astray of the pages. The library was deserted except for him and Madam Pince, who really was not good company. Colin marked his page and put the book in his bag, carefully hoisting it onto his shoulder after standing. The window drew his attention before he could leave, however, and Colin quickly took a peak outside. It had stopped snowing, but in his two hours of reading, a good two inches or so laid on the ground. Colin smiled wickedly and moved out of the library toward his dorm room with an idea creating in his mind. He set his bag down on his bed when he got to the tower and then looked through his clothes to find his heavy winter jacket. It made him look a lot...erm... puffier then he really was, but at least it kept him warm, right? Colin then pulled on gloves and a black hat to keep his ears warm, before going out of the common room once more and then out of Hogwarts.
The hallways were rather empty, which created enough room for Colin to walk faster. He did so and slowly but surely, he managed to squeeze out of Hogwarts' doors and into the small layer of snow. It crunched under his shoes, which he then remembered he should have worn boots or something of the like. No matter. He was going to enjoy this. He bent down, got on his knees, and began to make a snow ball. When it was formed properly, he then rolled it around in the snow until it was one gigantic snow ball. Colin smiled and then made a similar one, only it was smaller. He stacked that one on top of the other and molded the two together. Almost done... He made the third smallest ball and topped it off on the top of the other two. After molding those last two together, Colin stood back to admire his work. Not bad... It's face was blank, but that was okay for now. That snow man was slightly tilted to the side, but no matter. Colin had made that with his hands. Now he wanted to do another snowman, only different this time.
He pulled out his wand and did the whole process again. It was quick and efficient. The snow man on the right that was made from magic looked a lot better then the one on the left that was hand-made. Still, muggles knew what they were doing in a matter of speaking. Colin smiled eagerly at his snowmen and then sat down in the snow, feeling bored. Now that he had finished that, what should he do? Make another? Nah. That would be too time-consuming. He had gotten the picture he had wanted. Magic was better then muggle works. He smiled and touched the snow around him. His jeans were getting awfully wet but that was okay. Magic was here to save the day! Colin could dry off easily, no doubt. He was still sitting when someone came up behind him.
