Only a few short hours had passed since Perseus's return to Hogwarts after the last day of Winter Break. He was devouring a sumptuous lunch that had been laid out on the extremely elongated tables in the Great Hall. Each was long enough to accommodate approximately 250 students; there were about 1000 students at Hogwarts and there were four houses. Perseus happened to be in Slytherin House and was sitting with a group of fellow 7th years. He listened while they talked and laughed. However, Perseus was oblivious to most of what was being said. The N.E.W.T.s that all 7th years had to take weighed heavily on his mind. Perseus had obtained 8 O.W.L.s in his 5th year, having acquired mostly Outstandings, one or two Exceeds Expectations and two Dreadfuls, which were in the subjects of Divination and History of Magic. These failures still brought angry feelings to Perseus's mind even though they were perhaps his first ever failures and they had occurred two years ago. After receiving his letters, Perseus made the decision to ameliorate his skills and knowledge in his current field of studies to ensure that he would acquire top grades on his N.E.W.T.s. Perseus snapped out of his stupor to find that fifteen minutes had passed since he had sat down to eat and he had only taken two minuscule bites out of the chicken leg that was in his hand. Within one minute, Perseus had devoured all the food on his plate and he was going back for seconds; his voracious appetite had been increased recently because of the incessant studying he did late at night. This meant that Perseus needed a large amount of food to give him energy for the studying he did everyday.
Perseus stabbed at his potatoes with his fork as he glanced through the large windows of the Great Hall at the lake. The afternoon sun hung high in the sky, but was quickly obscured by dark, gray clouds. Hogwarts grounds was still covered in a thin layer of snow, as it was only the beginning of January. January usually brought more sunshine and less precipitation, but freezing winds were still prevalent. The corridors of the castle were still bitterly cold, especially in the dungeons and a raging fire was alway present in the common room. Even with all the bad weather, Perseus still did not look forward to the the beginning of spring, as that usually meant that he would have to double his efforts at studying. N.E.W.T.s were closing in, fast, and many of the 7th year students were seeing a definite increase in the amount of tests they received. There were even fewer free periods than in their 6th year, meaning less time to catch up with homework. Perseus's eyes wandered back onto his food and he had almost finished his lunch when he heard someone address him.
