Kathryn pushed her way through the large crowd of students all starving and rushing for their seats. She made her to the last open seat on the Ravenclaw table and looked around for her best friend, Elizabeth; it had been a troublesome summer and hadn't seen much her. "Uh..sorry, this seat it taken." Kathryn said to a gangly looking 4th year trying to sit next to her.
No longer a first year, Kathryn had changed into nearly a brand new person. Straight hair hung where once curly locks were due to a new straightening charm her mother had taught her over the summer. Although not much, Kathryn wore a simple style of make-up, accenting her green eyes and they seemed to jump out at you. But it wasn't just her physical being that had changed. Kathryn had a whole new demeanor. The summer months had given her a whole outlook. She was much more outspoken and stuck up for herself a lot better. The shy first year had gained a confidence about herself that she could only gain from experience, and this summer had provided plenty of that.
As the crowd thinned out, Kathryn searched more thoroughly for Elizabeth, fending off any students trying to take Elizabeth's seat.

Elizabeth walked through the grand entrance of Hogwarts, her silky brown hair hanging longer than before over her new school robes. She had her make-up done nicely, finally getting the hang of doing it herself, and her nails were painted a soft blue. There was a new found maturity about her, both mentally and physically. Her black flat sandals tapped the floor lightly as she entered the great hall, looking around anxiously for her good friend Kathryn. They had not seen each other it what seemed like a lifetime; Elizabeth had instead spent the summer with her muggle friends from elementary school and wanted nothing more than to see her.
Elizabeth had also grown much closer to her sister over the summer and was given the excitement of a lifetime when she found that her younger brother Sean was accepted into Hogwarts for the following school year. The summer had been great for Elizabeth but she was ready to come back to Hogwarts and continue her education in the magical world.
Pushing passed a few Hufflepuff's she saw the long wooden table that belonged to Ravenclaw. She had missed that table and it's occupants over the summer and it was good to see it filled with laughing students once again. Her eyes scanned down the table where she saw a very different looking Kathryn sitting, guarding a seat in the long table. A smile crossed Beth's face as she hurried towards Kathryn. She looked so different, her blonde locks hanging straight over her shoulders and a sweat looking face lightly covered in make-up.
Walking up behind the girl she tapped her lightly on the shoulder, waiting for her to turn around excitedly, "Guess who," she said mischievously.

Kathryn rested her head in her hand, her elbow planted on the table for support. She let out a sigh and stared at her reflection in the clean plate in front of her. She turned her head from side to side, checking to see if her straight hair had begun to go curly yet. She gave a small nod of approval and looked back up, searching for her friend.
She was just about to stop looking and give up Elizabeth's seat when she felt a gentle tap on her shoulder. "Guess who?" She heard a familiar voice say. Immediatly recognizing the voice, Kathryn spun herself around quickly and threw her arms around the girl she hadn't seen all summer. "Beth! I missed you so much!" The happiness of seeing her friend sent Kat into a stream of questions that seemed to go on forever, "What did you do this summer? Where you in any of the attacks? Where you hurt? How's your sister? Did your brother get in? Are you sure he'll be in Ravenclaw? What if he's not?" Her questions continued for sometime.
She stopped and looked up at her friend, a wide smile spread across her face. She had looked up at Beth's face for the first time and wasn't surprised to see how much more grown up she seemed. But it wasn't just Beth's outward appearance, she seemed to carry herself differently, as though she was much older then she actually was. She turned back around and patted the seat next to her, "C'mon now, sit! Fill me in on everything that's new!"

Elizabeth smiled as Kat wrapped her arms around her, "It's good to see you too," she said with a laugh hugging back tightly. Beth stared in awe as Kathryn interrogated her about her summer with questions that went on forever; she was relieved when Kat invited her to sit down.
She sat next to Kat and smiled, "You look good," she said honestly, noticing the changes that Kathryn had made over the summer summer. Beth picked up her goblet and took a drink before turning to Kat to answer her numerous questions, "Over the summer..." she thought, "I hung out with a lot of old muggle friends... it was fun. I was in Diagon when the attacks happened, at the Leaky Cauldron with a Raven boy named Gary." she stopped momentarily to look around for him, he had been very nice yet she did not have a chance to keep in touch. She turned back to Kathryn again, "I wasn't hurt, luckily, it was just shocking." She brushed her hair from her face before continuing, "My sister is fine and Sean did get in, " she smiled waiting for Kat's reaction, "I don't know whether or not he'll be in Raven but I'll be proud of him no matter what," she stopped for a moment, "unless he is a slytherin... then he wont be able to stay, you know how my father is," she sighed slightly and crossed her fingers.
She looked towards the front of the hall expecting the first years to come in any moment and then turned back to Kat after realizing they had not yet arrived, " And how was your summer," she questioned with a curious smile.

Kat took a sip from her goblet as Elizabeth sat down. "You look good." She heard her friend say. "Oh, thanks! My mum taught me a lot this summer. You look good too! So grown up!" She leaned her head in her hand as her friend rehashed her summer. Kat's jaw dropped as Beth said she'd been in Diagon Alley for the attacks. "Oh my god! I was in Ireland during the attacks. Mum started crying everytime an owl came; she was conviced someone in the family had died, but everyone was fine." Kat's smile broadened at the mention of Beth's brother coming to Hogwarts, she was dying to meet the boy she'd heard so much about the year before. Beth turned to doors and turned back to Kat, asking about her summer. As Kat opened her mouth to speak she heard the usual tapping on the glass from their headmaster and turned to find him standing, a sad smile on his face.
When the headmaster finished his welcome Kat turned to Beth, a sad expression on her gentle face, "That's so sad! Did you know her?" She asked, concerning the student that had passed away due to the attacks. The platters surrounding the girls filled with food and the tables creaked under the newly added weight. Kathryn grabbed a spoonful of mashed potatos and a cob of corn. "My summer wasn't quite as eventful as yours," she began as she grabbed a leg of the large turkey situated in front of them. "My mum and dad took me to Ireland for a month, so I wasn't involved in the attacks. I don't know what my Mum would have done had I been in Diagon Alley! She cried every time she read the Daily Prophet." She poured herself some pumpkin juice and took a sip before continuing, "But other then that I mostly stayed home. I did spend a lot of time with my Mum. She taught me this new straightening charm. It's much more affective then the others I taught myself." Kathryn finished and opened her mouth to speak just as the large oak doors at the end of the hall swung open, revealing several shaking first years. "Oh look! Now we get to see where Sean is." She nudged Beth and watched as the first years made their way between the two center tables.

Kathryn had barely began talking when Dumbledore stood up to give his usually speech. Beth's mouth dropped slightly when she heard of the death, "No," she said turning to Kat after Dumbledore sat, "I didn't know her." Dumbledore's news put a temporary gloom on Elizabeth's face, it was not everyday that a fellow student died. However, her sad face was broken when Kat continued speaking, telling Beth of her mother's reaction to the attacks and other such things from her summer, "That sounds like your mom," Beth joked.
The large wooden doors of the Great Hall swung open moments later and the first years came parading in. Beth smiled as Kat mentioned Sean, she was so proud that he had been accepted. Beth watched as the first years continued to pile in, searching the crowd for Sean, moments later she found him. She nudged Kat slightly, "There he is," she said pointing to a short brown haired boy who resembled herself. Beth's eyes met Sean's and he smiled and waved to her before holding up his crossed fingers.
The students stopped at the front of the hall and one by one made their way up to the stool. Only after 15 other first years were sorted was it Sean's turn on the stool. Beth watched anxiously as her younger brother hopped up onto the stool, "Gryffindor!" the hat yelled almost immediately. The young boy hopped off the stool, a gigantic smile playing across his face. Beth smiled as her brother made his way to the Gryffindor table, a little disappointed, but proud of him none-the-less.
She turned to Kat, "So that's Sean, You'll get to meet him after the feast," she said happily. Beth turned to the food on the table and started dishing herself helpings of her favorites. The opening feast was her favorite and she had never seized to completely stuff herself with the delicious foods.

Kathryn stood up halfway and began searching for the small boy. With great difficulty, she spotted him a little less than halfway back looking very nervous and frightened. She took her seat again and smiled at Elizabeth, "You two look so much alike! I wish I had siblings!" She took a bite of the mashed potatoes left on her plate and pushed her food around boringly as she waited for Sean to get up the hat.
It wasn't long until he was on the stool, the hat hanging over his ears, and when the hat shouted Gryffindor Kathryn clapped enthusiastically. "...You'll get to meet him after the feast." She heard Beth say over the excited yells coming from the Gryffindor table. Kat nodded, "I can't wait!" The rest of the feast was full of laughing and stories from the summer. ((yes, I know, lame ending to that paragraph))
As the students depleted the supply of food weighing down the tables, the talking also lessened. It was very late and now with a full stomachs, Kathryn wanted nothing more then to go to bed. She stood slowly after a dismissal from the headmaster and stretched her arms over her head, "Let's get out of here, I'm exhausted!" She covered a yawn with one of her delicate hands and stepped over the bench, heading for the large wooden doors.

The feast seemed to pass quickly, the large trays piled with food slowly but surely decreasing in size. Chicken, mashed potatoes, roast beef and vegetables of all kinds were now filling the belly's of the happy Hogwarts students. The candles that floated lazily above had almost burnt out, light holding on to the last piece of wick as it grew later into the night. The ceiling above beamed brightly with stars and a large crescent moon, free of clouds or fog. The hall was humming with lazy conversations of what the year was to bring, the new professor's and the potential of their new class mates. It was apparent that the feast was slowly coming to an end.
Elizabeth stretched her arms over her head, her mouth open releasing an enormous yawn. She had done it again, she could never seem to keep herself from eating till she felt like she was going to explode, it was just too good. She rubbed her belly with her hands turning to Kathryn, "I am so full... I feel like a blimp!" she giggled, puffing her cheeks out at her best friend. Her giggles were stifled when the headmaster stood and dismissed the students to bed. Elizabeth sighed in relief and stood, swinging her leg over the wooden bench.
She was anxious to be back in her dorm room, in the safe confinement of her warm and comfortable four poster bed. It was a comfort zone for her, a place for her to go and hide or sketch the traces of her day so far.
She walked lazily to the large wooden door with Kathryn, searching for Sean the whole way. It was not until they reached the door that she saw him. He was walking with a few Gryffindor students, they appeared to be his age, laughing and joking as if they had known each other for years. She hesitated for a moment before yelling out to him, "Sean," he paused and looked over to her a smile on his face. Waving to his friends he came over to the girls. Elizabeth smiled and gave her brother a hug, "How is it going, I see you are making friends already." He shrugged slightly before she continued, "Sean, this is Kathryn," she said pointing to her, "She's my best friend I've told you so much about."
Sean held his hand out politely, just as their parents had taught them, "Hi Kathryn, it's nice to meet you."

With her belly full, Kathryn was ready for bed. She wanted nothing more but to go upstairs to the wonderful four poster beds provided by the school. She raised her arms over her head and yawned, turning her eyes up to the enchanted ceiling. She walked behind Elizabeth lazily and watched the twinkling stars of the country night sky. She noticed Elizabeth searching for Sean their whole way to the large oak doors, and Kathryn hoped she'd find him.
As they approached the doors she felt Elizabeth tug on her robes. Her eyes turned and she saw a small boy smiling and waving goodbye to a group of gryffindors and heading their way. Kathryn smiled, as she figured this was sean, and nodded as Elizabeth introduced her. "Hi Kathryn, it's nice to meet you." The boys voice surprised her. It was a bit more mature than she'd anticipated. She clasped his hand and shook it firmly, "Hello. Same to you. It's so wonderful to meet the amazing Sean. Elizabeth talks so much about you I feel as though I already know you!" Kathryn placed her hand on her hip and smiled at her best friends brother.
