He had been conscious the whole time. They had only just gotten to the Alley when disaster struck and it seemed to be chaos all around him. He wasn't exactly sure what happened, but he was beside Hannah, talking to her, and Hannah's mother was leaving the way. Suddenly something knocked them away from their designated adult.
Injured students had been brought to Hogwarts, as there were too many injured parties to be in the solitary wizarding hospital, and here was the only reasonable solution. He assumed that Karen had been brought to St. Mungo's along with the other adults. He had not seen her since they had been separated that first instant, and he did not know the state of her condition.
He was currently lying in one of the beds in the hospital wing, though he hardly felt it necessary for him to occupy an entire bed. He could see that his left arm had some sort of herb bandage on it, and it felt a bit sore, but it should be cleared up and well by morning. He glanced over at the bed beside him and recognized it immediately as Hannah. Her blond pigtails were rather untidy, but he would have recognized her any were. He did not know the state of her injuries either, and he made a mental note to himself that he would have to inquire with Madam Pomfrey later to make sure he had the exact details.
He sighed and leaned back against his pillow. He wished to go over to Hannah, but he did not want to wake her. He could only imagine how hard the attack would have been on her. She would probably be in shock when she woke up. She never handled situations such as these well.
As he lay, he let his eyes flutter closed again, but not long after he heard approaching footsteps, followed by the soft murmur of adults trying to speak quiet enough not to be heard by others. He though, always had perfect hearing, and with just the slightest tilt of his head, it was no trouble at all.
"The poor dear...she hasn't woken up yet has she? She has no idea."
"I know...I don't know how I am going to break the news. Her poor mother never had a chance. They said that she must had died almost instantly, and the other Hufflepuff girl...Susan Bones, thats it, lost her Aunt as well...."
At first he did not know exactly who they were talking about, but toward the end...when they said 'her mother' and 'the other Hufflepuff girl' he knew exactly who the poor dear they were referring to was. Karen Abbott was not at St. Mungo's as he had originally assumed, she had not survived the attack.
He stayed still in bed until he heard the footsteps move away. He then pushed himself upright, taking care with his bruised shoulder, before moving off the bed and onto his feet. He immediately brushed himself off, as even an attack was no reason to look so untidy, before moving to Hannah's bed. Just as they had said, she had yet to wake, but he stood there anyway, and after a moment reached for her hand. He wanted to be there when she woke up. The news shouldn't come form some professor or adult she hardly knew. He needed to be the one to tell her.
