Maryn's suitcases lay open on her bed. She couldn't exactly take a trunk to a muggle hospital. Even though that seemed much easier. Why couldn't muggles use trunks too? There way more efficient than suitcases. Maryn's were pretty small so she had to take two. Maryn had to pack for an entire month and a half so she had to pack a lot. Staying at the hospital on a hospital bed and using a tiny shower wasn't exactly her idea of a great summer, but she had to go. Nathan needed her. Maryn's mom had been staying with him for the time being, but she had to get back to the store. Maryn could only help at the store for so long as for staying with Nate would be something she could do for days. Mum would much rather stay with Nate herself, but the insurance didn't cover all of Nate's medical bills and he had too many of them. No, Maryn had to stay with Nate. He needed her and wanted her to be there with him. Maryn had only written him a few letters lately. She hadn't actually gone to visit him yet. She was scared. Maryn didn't know what he looked like. He had only had one chemo treatment so his hair wasn't gone yet, but the nurses said it would only be a matter of time before it was. Maryn didn't know how to talk to him. He was Nate after all, but this was different. Maryn knew she could handle this, but could she do it with the famous Maryn smile on her face?
Maryn packed her clothes into the small bags. Everything was crammed in there. Everything from her sixties jewelry to her sweat shirts. Maryn's favorite comfort outfit was layed on top. That of course was her faded old jeans, her nearly fitted red Gryffindor sweatshirt, and her pink converse. She couldn't exactly wear the sweatshirt in the muggle world, but she would bring it anyways. Suddenly, Maryn heard someone come into her and Mercy's room. "Mare-n." Tommy said with his cute little five year old accent. "Hey budd." Maryn smiled as Tommy jumped on Mercy's bed. "Why do you have to go too?" He asked. Maryn's smile faded at this comment. Maryn had never seen Tommy seen Tommy sit still for more than five seconds before. She looked at him sadly. "I'm not leaving you." She said calmly. Tommy shook his head. "Yes, you are. You're leaving just like Nate." He insisted. "Are you sick too?" He asked. Maryn walked over and sat by him on Mercy's bed. "No, Tommy." She told him softly. "Then why are you going? Why are you leaving me again? You're already gone all year." Tommy said safely. Even though Tommy was five, he and Maryn had a connection. They were the only Livley wizards. Maryn was the one who explained to him that he was one. "I'm staying with Nate, baby. He needs me." She said calmly. Tommy nodded his head with a pained expression on his face before leaving the room.
"Ready baby?" Maryn's mum asked entering the room. Maryn nodded. "Almost." She said digging in her dresser to see if she missed anything. "What did you do with you're wand?" Mum asked. By this she meant that it she be kept out of sight and not in her purse. "Umm, I put it at the bottom of my bag in that old flute case of Mercy's and put one of my old journal locks on it." Maryn explain. Mum raised her eye brows. "How creative." She said giving a small smile. Mum walked over as Maryn continued to see that she had everything. "Are you sure you can do this?" She asked staring at her baby girl. Maryn looked at her mom and gave a slight smile. "I don't know, but I will." She said as she continued to pack. Maryn's mum nodded and turned to leave. "Mum." Maryn said before her mum left. "Yes." She replied. "Take care of Morgen for me please." She said calmly. Maryn's mother nodded. This was big for Maryn. Morgen was Maryn's owl. No one was ever allowed to touch her except Maryn. Maryn was sort of giving something from her own world too her mother and Maryn knew she appreciated it greatly. Maryn smiled to herself as she continued to pack.
An hour past and it was nearly time for Maryn to leave. She had changed out of the nightclothes she had been wearing all day. Maryn was now dresses pretty casually in her other dark jeans, a white polka-dotted short sleeved tunic, and some black beaded flip-flops. Maryn did something different with her hair. Lately, she had fun experimenting with that. She decided to wear it in low down pig tails. Usually Maryn wore it down, but this was a lot easier to maintain. Maryn picked up her old trusty creme colored messanger bag and swung it over her shoulder. Her suit cases were already zipped so she put them on the floor. Maryn took another look around the room before turning to leave. However, Mercy was in the doorway. "What's up?" Maryn asked eying the look on Mercy's face. "Tommy needs you here. He doesn't want me." She explained. Maryn shook her head. "I know Tommy needs me because I'm the only family witch and he is the only wizard, but he needs to try this house without me for one summer." She explained walking closer to the door pulling her suitcases with her. "Mercy, be the big sister this time. Don't say you can't do it because you're not a witch. Maybe Tommy really doesn't need that as much as he and you both think he does. He just needs a sister and you are a good one." Maryn jabbered. Mercy stared at her calmly. "Nate needs me more." She said as Mercy moved out of the way letting Maryn pull her suitcases through. "What if I can't do that?" She asked with a sad look and her hands on her hips. Maryn turned towards her. "What if you can?" She asked turning to leave and pulling her suitcases down with her.
The goodbyes had been harder than Maryn thought. She had been gone all year and her family understood. But, now was different. Maryn's mum and dad knew Nate needed her, but Mercy and Tommy wanted her too. Maryn didn't know that she was needed that much sometimes, but of course that was her not giving herself credit as usual. Maryn was in the car. Her father was driving her to the hospital while mum stayed with Merc and Tommy. "You can do this, you know." He said while still staring at the road. They sat in silence for a few moments before Maryn said anything. "Can I?" She asked. Her dad nodded. "You're strong Maryn. Admit that." He told her. The rest of the drive was completely silent and Maryn liked it that way. Finally they reached the hospital. Maryn's father lugged the suitcases up the stairs to where the children's ICU ward was located. The floor was mainly empty and Maryn shivered. Some doors were open and the little children seemed sort of happy watching t.v. Others were closed and Maryn could hear family members crying nearby. Those children didn't have too much longer. Maryn could feel it. But, Nate wasn't that bad off yet. He still had time. Maryn's dad stopped at the last door on the hall. He opened the door. Maryn saw Nate give her a big smile. She gave a small one herself. He was a hard sight for her. He was pale with tubes coming out of him. Maryn had never seen Nate this way. He smiled again. "Afraid?" He asked sort of laughing and then he stopped. Maryn only nodded.
