A shiver ran down Dana’s back as she took a couple of steps back to stand under the small roof over the door to some shop. She had returned from Spain to the stereotypical England weather – it was pouring and it was quite chilly. Dana – in her quite short dark-green mini-skirt and a black silk-blouse – most certainly wasn’t dressed suitably for the weather. Even her black heeled boots looked rather out of place when compared to the colourful Wellington boots most other people hurrying up and down through Diagon Alley wore. Not to mention Dana’s lack of umbrella which had forced her to seek for shelter under the small roof here in the first place. She didn’t quite want to get soaked to the bone. It was cold enough. Casting a heating charm on herself would be an easy task. Would be if Dana had a wand. But Kris had owled the two remaining pieces of her previous wand to her after Dana had returned to London late last night. The almost two weeks she spent in Spain just thinking about life had done good to her. As had the talk with Sapph who had came after her. Dana had made her friend return to Hogwarts sooner than she herself came – Sapph has OWLs this year after all! – yet, she herself would be returning to school today as well. After she bought herself a new wand. Dana wondered briefly what kind of a wand she would receive. She had had a 10 inches long mountain ash wand with a dragon’s heart-string core. It had worked nicely in Dana’s hand, yet maybe it was time to get a new one? Dana had grown and changed quite a lot since she was 11 and got her previous wand. She would just have to take the step across the street and go find out.
Yet Dana still stood in one place staring into Diagon Alley. Umbrellas brought people closer. It was a curious notion, but they did. Everyone sharing their umbrella with someone else stood closer and Dana noticed smiled on most of such faces. Sometimes you almost needed to feel someone standing close to you or touching your arm. At least Dana did, even though she was far from being a touchaphobe. She was French. It would go against her character if she was afraid of socializing and touching people. But it was nice to see others coming closer together – even if only for until it rained – so Dana smiled quietly to herself. A dark figure blocked her view a moment later however and Dana looked up into the face of a widely smiling young man. “Are you lost? Can you help you get somewhere?” he asked with a smile which almost demanded that Dana smiled back. A wordless request that Dana willingly fulfilled as she smiled at the man: “Not really lost and I’m going to Ollivanders. Or at least I will be going there once I move from here.”
The man laughed and extended his hand towards Dana: “Well, may I escort you over the street to his door then? It would be a sham to leave a pretty girl alone.” Dana laughed and accepted the man’s arm smiling grateful as the man shifted his black umbrella so that it was over both of their heads as they crossed the street rather quickly, as the street wasn’t even wide here.
“Even if you are only flattering, I will gladly accept the compliment,” Dana told the man with a smile slipping form under his umbrella to the roof over the door to Ollivander’s store and smiling at the man, “And thank you for your escort.” “It was my pleasure. Would you perhaps be interested in having coffee with me? Or at least tell me something about you?” the man asked and for a moment Dana considered it. The man was kind and didn’t really look too bad either.
“Alright, I’ll tell you something,” Dana stated with a smile as she placed a hand on the man’s arm and reached upwards to whisper in his ear, “Umbrellas bring people closer together.” Smiling at the man Dana left him standing there and slipped in from the door to Ollivanders the old wizard already being behind his counter when Dana entered.
Answering to Ollivanders questions briefly Dana was glad to see that the man was more curious in finding her a suitable wand than in making small-talk. This didn’t last for too long however because when the 10th wand already didn’t work Dana guessed that she would be in for quite a long wait. Waving the wand in her hand Dana observed almost absent-mindedly as she wrecked Ollivander’s store – was this the reason why it was the last one in the street? – while Ollivander kept repairing things. Keeping count Dana knew that it was wand number 34 that finally worked for her. 10 inches, phoenix feather and white willow. It sent a shower of cherry blossoms out when Dana flicked it and both she and Ollivander smiled almost victoriously as Dana paid for the wand. A total of 23 galleons and 4 sickles. Thanking Ollivander, who just waved Dana away saying he had been glad for a costumer during a quiet week, Dana left the store and looked up towards the sky and smiled. She had a new wand, she was returning to Hogwarts and just maybe it was the sun that was peeking through the clouds there creating a rainbow. And Dana felt content and happy again as she gave one more testing flick to her wand crearting some more cherry-blossoms tha rained down from the tip of her wand disappearing just before touching the ground.
