Amelia walked down the hallway from her bedroom, a heavy bag; packed full of clothes was slung over her right shoulder. The weight of the clothes, make-up, and other things she takes to her father's over the weekend as her small Crup puppy, Rebel, trotted along beside her. Rebel was an adorable pet. She looked like a Jack Russell terrier, except for the forked tail. Most Muggles never noticed how oddly shaped the puppy’s tail was, but sometimes someone would ask and Amelia would say it was a birth defect… then she would walk away and laugh. The Ministry has been sending letters over and over saying she needs to go to the Department of something and something so that they can remove the fork in the tail, but Amelia has been slowly putting it off…
She set the bag down by the front door, in waiting for her father to pick her up. She sat down on the couch; Rebel instantly jumped up beside Amelia and curled up in her lap. Amelia smiled, absently petting Rebel on the head. her mother, Jay'Na and her step father, Ray sitting on the other couch, a cigarette in both of their hands. She was used to the smell of smoke; she was used to the feeling of not breathing completely because the smoke was so intoxicating to breathe in. She hated being around them when they smoked, but they smoked constantly and there was no escape. She didn't sit there long, watching a few moments of TV, when a knock came from the door. She smiled, her father had finally arrived.
The blond stood, walking to the front door, Rebel following close behind then opened the front door and felt her smile fall. Who stood before her was not her father, nor her step mother. A gruff looking man stood outside the doorway, his beard was brown and short and his eyes looked kind, yet fuzzy as if the man was drunk. He stumbled inside, startling Amelia, Rebel and her mother. Ray stood, smiling and laughing. The man was obviously a friend. Amelia raised an eyebrow. Jay'Na looked furious as Ray helped his friend stand and start toward the basement door. As Ray opened the basement door, Jay'Na screamed for him to stop. Ray looked behind him, a bit confused. Amelia moved around the TV so she could watch the two men at the door and her angry mother.
"Yeah, babe?" Ray asked his wife. Jay'Na gave him a look as if saying- What-do-you-think??? Amelia smirked a bit, yet she was not all that amused. Her step father did this on purpose. He knew what was wrong, he knew why his wife was angry, and yet he pretended he didn't. Soon a fight will erupt and Ray will continue with his stupid charade.
"RAY!? THERE IS A DRUNK MAN IN MY HOUSE!" Before anymore could be heard, the door bell rang. Amelia, relieved that she could escape the fight she knew was going to happen, ran to the door, Rebel barked her puppy bark and followed. Amelia’s smile was larger as she opened the door and it fell just as quickly when she saw those who stood on the porch. Four men, all looking just as gruff as the first man, they weren't as drunk, though a few were holding six packs of beer. As they entered the house, brushing the 15 year old aside and almost stepping on the poor puppy at her feet, Amelia finally noticed two girls. They looked a few years older than herself. Her mouth dropped. Ray was having a party... while her mother was home... what is going on in that man's mind.
Her mother's voice boomed over the whole neighborhood as the other people entered. Amelia didn't want to wait to hear; she grabbed her bag and clipped Rebel’s leash to her green collar and ran outside. She would wait for her father on the curb. As the door slammed shut and Amelia was greeted with the early night air. It had just hit 9 o-clock and the sky was black, stars dotting about. Amelia looked up at the crescent moon, peaking up over the tops of the trees as her mother's screams echoed through the night, muffled though the sound was, seeing as Jay’Na was inside. Amelia sighed, sitting. Ray had never gone this far before. He usually did things to bug her mother and enjoyed to taunt Amelia, but throw a party? While both she and her mother was there? That was much too far!
It felt like forever, though maybe only a few minutes, her mother's screaming suddenly matched with Ray's yells, but she finally saw the headlights of what was hopefully her father's truck. The street was drowned in bright white light as the silver truck approached. Amelia stood, sudden tears coming to her eyes as her father exited the car. Amelia then noticed the cars the party guests had arrived in. Her tears fell from her bright blue eyes and she flung herself into her father's arms. He hugged her, his eyes concerned, though Amelia could not see as she cried.
"Amy, what's wro-" he stopped short as the screams boomed out one more time. He nodded, understanding. He looked down at his daughter, anger in his eyes. Though he had divorced Jay'Na, they had remained friends for Amelia and her sister, Jenny's, sake. He cared for Jay'Na and hated how Ray treated them. He instructed Amelia to sit in the car and stormed into the house. Within seconds, the party guests left the house and Amelia watched them leave, a few looking angry, the girl's looking a bit scared. Maybe they didn't know what they were getting them selves into, Amelia didn't know, but she did know that they looked so young riding in the back of the car. She bit her lip and looked down. Soon Jay'Na was running outside her house, toward Amelia. Her arms flung about Amelia's neck and Jay'Na sobbed into her daughter's shoulder.
Confused, dazed and wondering what she should do, Amelia patted her mother's back. This had never happened before. Her mother was the bravest woman she knew. She went through three marriages, two divorces, teenage pregnancy and having a witch for a daughter and Jay'Na was still alive. How she did it, Amelia would never know, but she did respect her mother for all the woman was worth. Jay'Na rarely cried. If she did, it was because she was worried about Amelia or Jenny. She only cried during a fight between her and Ray, once, maybe twice in Amelia's memory.
Amelia comforted her mother as best she could, truth was, and she was just as shaken. Finally, after what felt like five hours, but in reality was 30 minutes, Adam left the house, his eyes very angry and his hands clenched at his sides. Ray stumbled to the door, clutching his jaw and yelling a few curse words at Adam.
"Beeping beeper punched me!" Amelia's eyes widened. Ray had never used that language at her father before. Adam and Ray usually tried to get along... Amelia whispered to her mother, "Ma... is Ray drunk?" Jay'Na tried to growl, but it came out in a strange sort of sob. She glared at Ray.
"I hope so, because if he's sober... I am going to-" Amelia's mouth dropped open at her mother's next words... she didn't know it was that bad. She hugged her mother and stood, Adam motioning for her to get in the car. She did, pulling Rebel along with her and watched from the front seat as Adam spoke with Jay'Na for an hour. Ray had gotten in his car and sped away, obviously furious. Jay'Na sobbed uncontrollably as Adam spoke with her. Amelia wondered if this was the beginning of a divorce... she rather hoped so. Ray wasn't the worst man, but he wasn't the best either. In fact he wasn't even that nice, never appreciated anyone or anything. Rebel, sensing her owner’s tension and sadness, licked Amelia’s hand and whined loud enough for Amelia to look down at her. Rebel barked, wagging her forked tail. Amelia couldn’t help but laugh a bit. Her puppy was adorable.
After Jay'Na's sobbed had ceased and Adam had successfully made her laugh more than once, he hugged her good-bye and got into his car. Jay'Na opened Amelia's door and stood there a moment, her eyes deceiving her thoughts. She seemed to be searching for the right words.
"Honey..." Amelia interrupted her, "Mom, you don't have to explain his actions. You don't even have to apologize. Just promise me that you'll leave his… but!" Amelia had to censor her words; she wanted nothing more than to curse over and over until her throat hurt. Jay'Na smiled, laughing a bit.
"One thing I will say, I do need to apologize. I can't believe he did that and I don't know what I am going to do yet... I may leave him, I may stay..." Adam growled, clutching the steering wheel. Sensing her ex husband's tension, Jay'Na kissed her daughter’s cheek good-bye and shut the door. Amelia and her father talked about the night on the way home, she listened as he called his wife, Emma, on his cell phone. She bit her lip again, wondering what will become of her mother's life. Rebel barked again, obviously trying to cheer Amelia up, who scratched the puppy’s ear and laughed again.
