((Just for me))
Fiona climbed off of the Hogwarts Express dragging her trunk behind her while she held her cat's carrier in front of her. She looked around the crowded platform full of parents waiting for their children to arrive. Fiona stood on the balls of her feet trying to look over the people so close in front of her. Finally she spotted her parents in the back trying to push their way forward. Fiona took a deep breath trying to calm her racing heart. She had been thinking about how to talk to her parents concerning her doubts about the Dark Lord. She wasn't sure how they were going to take it since her father was a Death Eater and active since the Dark Lord's return.
Fiona began to slowly make her way through the crowd to meet her parents half way and they smiled as they hugged her. "How was ye third year?" her mother asked her and Fiona just shrugged. She was feeling a little sick at the coming conversation she was going to have with them. "Anything wrong, Fi?" her father asked as he placed a hand on her shoulder. Fiona hoped her father didn't feel the tremble that vibrated throughout her body when he touched her. She loved her father, but something about the fact that he was a Death Eater had scared her ever since the attack in the Student Lounge she witnessed.
"No, Da," Fiona smiled as her father watched her closely. After a few seconds he shrugged and used his wand to mobilize her trunk. Together they traveled back to Fiona's home in Ireland. She smiled at the familiar surroundings with the tall gray castle standing against the cliff. She missed the sea more than she realized as she looked out over the cliff. As the doors to the hall were opened she smiled at the suit of armors that lined the walls. The grand white staircase that wound its way up the castle still looked just as magnificent as it had the day she left. She turned to the opposite wall and smiled at the O’Reilly family tree that was embroidered on a tapestry across from the stairs. It went back generations and Fiona remembered tracing each name on the tapestry with her finger as a little girl. It felt like she had been away for years and with excitement she ran up the stairs forgetting about the conversation she was planning on having with her parents. She entered her bedroom in the tower and looked out the window facing the sea. She could smell the salt and the wind blew lightly as it lifted her hair from her back. She leaned out the window and watched as the waves crashed against the cliff far below. Closing her eyes she concentrated on the sound and smell of the sea and it soothed her soul.
A sound at her door made her jump. Turning she saw her parents enter her room. The confrontation was about to begin and Fiona knew that everything she treasured was about to be put in jeopardy. It was the defining moment of their relationship. Would they understand or would they condemn her. Fiona walked slowly to her parents feeling as though she was about to be executed. "Fi, you seem a wee bit off," her mother smiled weakly as she brushed Fiona's long hair behind her shoulder.
Fiona figured that it was now or never and she looked to her parents with renewed strength. "I am a bit off. I have been for a while now…ever since I witnessed a Death Eater attack on students at Hogwarts. It wasn't like they were dangerous or anything, yet the three Death Eaters still attacked them. Why would they do that? They were just students; they didn't even have their wands out. I don't know if I want to follow your footsteps anymore! I don't think the Dark Lord is right!" With that last statement Fiona realized that she had gone too far and sure enough her father took out his wand. She felt the wall against her back before she realized what had happened.
"Sean! That is our daughter!" Fiona heard her mum say. She opened her eyes and tried to clear the blurriness from them. Her whole body ached and she knew she was going to be bruised. Fiona looked up at her father and for the first time in her life was scared for her life. She leaned against the wall for support waiting to see if her father would use his wand against her again. “Sean! Please!” Fiona’s mother cried. He finally lowered his wand, but did not break eye contact with Fiona. “I thought ye learned something at that school. Ye have disappointed me. No matter, ye will follow after me and serve the Dark Lord, or ye will be killed. Not by me, but the Dark Lord will surely send someone. Ye are the bearer of the O’Reilly heirloom ring and ye will obey the teachings and beliefs of our family. If ye do not ye will surely be put to death. You have dishonored this family with yer beliefs about our Master!” With that last statement Fiona’s father turned abruptly and slammed the door as he exited.
“Oh, Fi,” Shannon cried as she ran to her daughter. Fiona’s legs became jelly beneath her and she crumpled to the floor in a weeping heap. Shannon helped her daughter to her bed and sat down next to Fiona’s shaking body. Fiona’s face was tear streaked and her body still ached from the spell her father used on her. “Fi why do ye think the Dark Lord is wrong?” Shannon asked. Fiona jumped at the sound of her voice and Fiona looked up into familiar and kind eyes. “Children, mum, children. That’s who those Death Eaters attacked, not adults, not even armed children. They were talking and that was all,” Fiona said in a tone that ended their conversation. Shannon noticing her daughter’s abruptness reluctantly rose from Fiona’s bed and quietly exited her room.
Once her mother had left a new wave of pain and grief settled on Fiona and she began to weep. ‘How could I be so stupid?’ Fiona asked herself. ‘Maybe Da is right and I really have no choice anyway. I don’t think I can follow him.’ Fiona gingerly sat up feeling the pain in her back subside a little. She dug into her trunk looking for her journal. She could share whatever she wanted with it, without it telling everyone what she said.
Pulling her journal and her quill out Fiona began to write:
Dear Journal,
I never imagined that things with my Da would go so badly. He used magic against me! The pain in my back doesn’t compare to the pain in my heart. Another one has betrayed me and this time it’s my own flesh and blood. My mum understood, she wanted to know why I didn’t think the Dark Lord was right. I do appreciate her concern and her love. I still can’t trust her though. After all she is married to my Da and he would do anything to know about the plans I have for this summer. I know more than he thinks I do. I might be in Slytherin and I might still dislike muggles, mudbloods, and half-breeds, but that doesn’t mean I want them all dead. I will fight back against the Dark Lord. He will not control me like he has so many others. I know what I have to do this break. We leave for Uncle Charlie’s manor in London in five days. Until then, I will keep an eye on my father. I will figure out what he’s been doing if it’s the last thing I do!
